My Philosophy of Education


As a young child I always looked forward to family gatherings. I was one of twenty grandchildren on my dad's side of the family, and one in seven on my mom's side, so there were always lots of children around. But it wasn't the children in my own age group or older that I wanted to be around, it was the babies and one's younger than myself that I wanted to spend time with. I decided in middle school, that I would be a teacher. I feel that I can understand children and their needs and have the patience and desire needed to teach.

After high school, I started working in a daycare, instead of going off to college. I then got married, moved away, was stuck with jobs I hated, than made the decision to go to college and reach for my goal of becoming a teacher. I believe that because I have waited and really thought through what my hopes and expectations are for myself that I will be the best teacher I can be. I hope to be a teacher in the lower elementary grades.

Steven Brookfield once said "Sometimes the last thing learners need is for their preferred learning style to be affirmed. Agreeing to let people learn only in a way that feels comfortable and familiar can restrict seriously their chances for development." Each child learns through auditory, visual, or kinesthetic. I feel that for every one to understand and to really grasp a concept it is important to try to teach using all three methods whenever possible, or divide the students into three different groups and let them make their own poster, recording, or project, allowing them time to once again work together.

...ion and I think this would be a great place for it. We will have a classroom pet with opportunities for the students to take him home over the weekends and vacations as a form of responsibility. Furthermore, the room will be set up with different stations for the children to go to during scheduled time. For example, an art area with art supplies; a writing area with pencils, pens, paper, and dictionaries; a reading area where the students can explore through the use of books; and a computer area.

My hopes are that by the end of the school year each student will have a strong friendship with their fellow classmates, will feel good about themselves and what they have accomplished, and have learned what they need to move on and be successful.

My plans upon graduating with a bachelor degree, is to pursue a career as an Early Elementary teacher.
