Prehistoric Art: Devotional or Decorative?
For thousands of years human beings have created art. Whether it takes the form of pictures, sculptures, or other any other type of object, it has always been something thought to be particularly beautiful by the people of the culture that created it. However, for much of history these items were also meant to serve a practical purpose. From decorative bowls and clothing to illuminated manuscripts and illustrative murals, much early art was meant to serve a utilitarian as well as aesthetic purpose, feeding, clothing and educating those privileged enough to use it. As late as the middle ages painters were considered craftsmen, similar to those of any other trade, and in fact in some cultures this trend continues even today. It was not until the Renaissance that the idea of "art for arts sake" became acceptable in most Western creative circles.
In the case of most prehistoric art, it is difficult to know the purpose for sure since there is no written record of its use. Many of these pieces are also quite ambiguous in meaning and even imagery, for example the woman from Willendorf and other early human figurines, and the cave paintings that ranged from Europe to Africa. Perhaps because of this, and because of the apparent predominance of religion and magic in these cultures, they are often ascribed a ceremonial purpose, such as bringing fertility or good hunting. Indeed, in these cases it seems to be a reasonable assumption, supported by the exaggerated female aspects of the women, and the healthy, abundant appearance of the animals depicted in cave paintings. The rationale behind this theory is that in early agricultural societies people had to work hard to survive, leaving little ti...

It is difficult to define or explain the artistic impulse, even today, and it is even more difficult to pinpoint the one point in history when human beings developed a desire for aesthetically pleasing objects. However, several trends that have endured for thousands of years, particularly the decoration of vessels, textiles, and jewelry, and the creation of drawings and sculpture even today when they are no longer the easiest way to tell a story, leads me to believe that there is something in the human spirit that has always sought out the beautiful, whether in concord or conflict with the practical. And although the role of art and artists has changed drastically in the past and will likely continue to do so in the future, there will always be an impulse, whether admired and supported or looked down upon by society, to make life just a little bit brighter.
Lee illustrates Atticus Finch as a very understanding character, especially during the Tom Robinson trial. During the revolting times of the 1930s, it was outlandish for a white man to stand up for a Negro man. For example, when the towns’ people are talking about Atticus, they say, “You know the court appointed him to defend this nigger.” “Yeah, Atticus aims to defend him, that’s what is don’t like about it” (218). When Atticus is delegated to defend Tom Robinson, he not only defends him because he was ordered to. Atticus intentionally helped Tom and wanted Tom to win. Even though the towns’ people did not like Atticus aiming to defend Tom, he understood that it was his duty to help him. Another example is in chapter 22 when Bob Ewell spits on Atticus’s face. Atticus didn’t react intrusive because he knew that it would affect people’s outlook on the trial and on Tom. Atticus stood above the standard and helped a black man, which earned him respect from the Negro people in town. Atticus was very wholehearted when deciding to help Tom Robinson in the trial.
The properties of ginger root in the herbal kingdom is that ginger is a root that has a sweet smell and has a strong, pungent, spicy taste. Ginger root is also known as a wonder spice that is used in food and medicine. It can help with nausea, muscle soreness, inflammations, and other medical needs. The significance of ginger in Song of Solomon is that the smell of ginger brings a calm sense to the people who smell it. In Songs of Solomon ginger symbolizes a happy getaway place or a sense of relief. An example of this is when the ginger smell is brought up traveling along the Southside. Many people who smelled the ginger believed that their dreams were true, or it has people thinking about what freedom, justice, etc. felt like.
Ray Bradbury states “We bombard people with sensation. That substitutes for the thinking.” I agree with this statement because with all the technology and entertainment the 21st century offers where has the thinking and investigating gone? In his book Fahrenheit 451, his words manifest a horrible time where important writings from philosophers, playwrights, and authors are censored and almost everyone is solely focused on all the mind-numbing technology around them. In another article titled, “Study explores how Internet, technology affect young people” by Michael Abernethy, a survey explores how these machines could affect the future generations in negative way by being raised in their presence. I understand that technology is helpful and makes life a lot easier but becoming too reliant on it will weaken the ability to think freely and stopping us from seeing the real meaning in knowledge.
In conclusion, for profit prisons do just that, they look for ways to make a profit by cutting corners and providing less than adequate living conditions for inmates. This imposes a significant risk for many things such as, extreme overcrowding in the private facilities, lack of medical care, lack of nutritious meals, and decrease in the number of staff that are in the facilities. The staff get don’t get paid as much as they should for the amount of hours they put into the facilities also causing risks for the safety and security of the
What is art? Art is the self-expression of someone of something that shows the hidden or underlying emotions that are found within the unconscious mind. Art has been around for centuries (“Merriam-Webster”). Normally, art would tell stories of past events which were significant to that culture. This could include things such as hunts and sacrifices to please the gods. As people and humanity started to evolve and become more civilized, art started to transform and take on a new appearance as well. From being a story prop to something that is more abstract; art started to become more and more important in the lives of people. During the renaissance in Europe, many new artists and ways of thinking emerged and became the main-stream way of thinking. Many of those artist are household names such as Vincent Van Gogh and Leonardo da Vinci . They transformed art from what it was to how we see it today (Belliveau). Jumping forward from the renaissance to the 1960’s, you have artists emerge such as Andy Warhol and Jackson Pollok. They pushed the boundaries of art and how it was perceived in society (American Art Therapy Association).
Prisons require an abundance of money to be run properly and effectively. By using taxes to pay for prisons the American public pays to support the lives of inmates and all of their needs. Prisoners require food, drink, beds, supplies for doing other activities and all of the overlooked things in normal life that go along with these necessities. Inmates have special needs like all of us do. Inmates reguire medical care, for example some have AIDS or other diseases that require medicine which cumulate large bills over time.(Luzadder) Imagine the money amassed over a life sentence of paying for medicine. The American public pays for all of these expenses added to the actual building of the prison f...
More in depth, the entire concept of art and what is art differs in the world of the nonliterate societies. This is the first rule that needs to be analyzed. In addition to, the objects westerners view as art is actually a small piece to a bigger puzzle. To the Natives, the overall puzzle or purpose is to created and stabilize the cosmic order in which they live in. It is through this process of rituals and sacred ceremonies to keep order that objects are created of beauty, but for bigger reason. Not to hang on a wall or leave behind a glass case; but rather, keeping order and doing away with chaos that could destroy their existence.
Throughout history into today, there have been many problems with our prison system. Prisons are overcrowded, underfunded, rape rates are off the charts, and we as Americans have no idea how to fix it. We need to have shorter sentences and try to rehabilitate prisoners back to where they can function in society. Many prisoners barely have a high school education and do not receive further education in jail. Guards need to pay more attention to the well being of the inmates and start to notice signs of abuse and address them. These are just a few of the many problems in our prison systems that need to be addressed.
The experience I obtained from interning at the General Sessions Court was exactly as I had hoped. I worked closely with the clerks and senior clerks.
Upper Paleolithic art can be put into two major categories; figurative arts such as cave painting that clearly depict images of animals or animals; and non-figurative, arts which consist of symbols and shapes. The paintings were a form of magic designed to ensure successful kill during hunting. Symbols like images and unique symbolic patterns are also common in this age that might have been trademarked to represent different ethnic groups Venus figurines have been described as a representation of gods, pornographic imagery, apotropaic, amulets used for sympathetic magic. Also, a variety of lower quality art and figurine has also been identified that shows a wide range of skills and ages among the artist of the Upper Paleolithic age. Ginger is used a lot as a cooking ingredient or spice in Asian cuisine. It is also used in many western dishes such as Gingerbread Men, Ginger Beer and Ginger Snaps.
Prison was designed to house and isolate criminals away from the society in order for our society and the people within it to function without the fears of the outlaws. The purpose of prison is to deter and prevent people from committing a crime using the ideas of incarceration by taking away freedom and liberty from those individuals committed of crimes. Prisons in America are run either by the federal, states or even private contractors. There are many challenges and issues that our correctional system is facing today due to the nature of prisons being the place to house various types of criminals. In this paper, I will address and identify three major issues that I believe our correctional system is facing today using my own ideas along with the researches from three reputable outside academic sources.
In today's society, robots come in different types and qualities, and robots’ use was mainly in the laboratories and factories; however, that has drastically changed where their uses are changing at a high speed. In addition to that, they have spread throughout the world. The main function of robots is to replace the work that people used to do, or perform tasks that man cannot. A robot is a mechanical or virtual device that uses a computer program, or electronic circuitry, to carry out its functions. In modern science, robotics refers to the study of robots is robotics, which deals with designing, constructing, operating, and using robots and computer systems for controlling and processing information and providing feedbacks. However, as much as robots replace human labor, individuals or organizations can use them in dangerous environments that might be harmful and beneficial to humans. Therefore, to understand the logic behind the creation of robots, one should learn the pros and cons of robotics, in the current society. This is because people are using this technology without having a deep understanding of its effects. However, an objective evaluation of the use of robots, in the modern society, shows that they have a positive influence on human beings, but if the robots were overused, it could lead to a negative side. which shows why human beings should use robots wisely that will result an improvement to their societies and own lives. Robots have become interactive equipment whereby they have become part of human life. In this regard, people use them directly or indirectly to enhance the quality of their lives. However, Sharkey argues that there are ethical issues that arise because of using robots to enhance hu...

To conclude, robots could be the backbone of the society that will result in a technological revolution. Because of robots various characteristics that do not experience fear, nor exhaustion and they are precisely programmed, which make them able to help in case of need, housework, and factories production. Society needs to put the issue of robots into consideration to satisfy any shortage exists in the world.
