Letters vs. E-mail: Communicating through Writing
My grandparents, aunts, uncles, and cousins live in Ireland leaving oceans and expensive air fare separating us. Through pictures, stories, letters, and phone calls I have come to know the history of my family, what brought my mother to this country, and what a life in Ireland is like. However, over time these forms of communication were not strong and consistent enough to enable me to build an emotional connection and relationship with specific members of my family. I mainly just heard my mother’s point of view and got to know my family through her experiences with them. That was before the invention of electronic mail, a faster, cheaper outlet for communication that can reach anyone in the world who has access to the World Wide Web. Without technology, cyber space, and e-mail I would have very little communication and understanding of my family in Ireland.
Prior to the creation of e-mail, writing letters was the best way to communicate overseas or anywhere a phone company considered long distance. Phone calls were too expensive and the time difference between Ireland and Michigan made it inconvenient to reach someone at a suitable hour. Phone numbers and area codes are also constantly changing while e-mail addresses stay with you wherever you go. While I was in High School my family moved three times, making it difficult for my relatives overseas to keep up with which number was the most recent. However, they knew it was still possible to get a hold of us via e-mail. Communicating through letters was exhausting, demanded time, and required readable penmanship. It could take almost two weeks to receive mail and half the time it would...

...f writing provide for a fast and effective mode of communication. There are both positive and negative characteristics associated with the use of the postal mail system and the handwritten letter versus electronic mail and computer created text. However, without the invention of e-mail it would not be possible for me to communicate and keep in touch with my family overseas as often and frequently as I do. Thanks to e-mail I can now build a better relationship with family members I seldom get to physically interact with.

Satel argues for organ donation system reform in the United States. She provides valid and supported reasoning for her thoughts. Implied consent and compensation for donation are inventive and legitimate ways to prevent deaths of individuals on the organ waiting list. Compensation would improve the quality of life of both donors and recipients and implied consent would increase the amount of usable organs. These reforms would greatly benefit those in need of a transplant. The need for organs is large and the argument to increase the number of organs for donation is strong.
Maxine, being of the first generation of her family to be born in America, only knows about China from what she hears in her mother’s “talk-stories.” These stories are told to act as lessons on how the Chinese people were and should be, and are often vary critical. In “No Name Woman,” the tale of Maxine’s aunt who was shunned from her family for having an affair shows how careful young women must be when growing up in Chinese culture. “My aunt haunts me—her ghost drawn to me because now, after fifty years of neglect, I alone devoted pages to her…” (17). Maxine feels remorse and can relate to her aunt because she too feels a sense of alienation from her traditional Chinese and seemingly narrow-minded heritage.
The allegation that videogames cause violent behavior in children has been present as long as videogames themselves. Some researchers said that the Sandy Hook shooter, Adam Lanza, was one intense gamer. “Seung-Hui Cho, the Virginia Tech Shooter was seen by his roomates as odd because he never joined them in video games.”(Beresin) This debate will continue to go on in this country as long as there are horrific crimes that occur. There is much written in the research regarding this issue, and many differing views. The research that is presented in the next few paragraphs supports the theory that it is not the graphic video games that produce aggressive behavior, but other factors in a child’s life that create violent actions.

In political theory we have covered readings of many authors that all have their own opinions on how a government should be run and what the purpose of having a government is. Most of the political theorists we have read about inform us of a person’s natural state or how they act while not among a civil society. In the natural state that each political theorist creates, he is able to create his hypothesis of how a government should be setup in the transition from a natural state to a civil society. Whether to preserve the natural state of man or to place laws against man’s natural state is the main question for the political theorist. I believe that Rousseau does the best job of answering this question because of his creation of the social
"This is a story of boy meets girl, but you should know upfront, this is not a love story" (Webb, 2009). Marc Webb's film (500) Days of Summer, is an unconventional unrequited story about love. Tom Hansen meets Summer Finn at work and instantly knows that she is the girl for him. He takes the viewers on a journey through the highs and lows of his continuously evolving relationship. Webb relies on editing, style, and image to draw viewer interest. Production techniques and narrative are used to portray thoughts, emotions, and motivations of the two characters. In (500) Days of Summer, content and form work together to create a conventional post-modernist and post-classical Hollywood style film.
Although, the internet is a faster alternative, it destroys the purpose; going by different servers or mediums which the letter might have passed through before getting to the recipient- it diminishes its worth. According to Goodman, “I am among those who still believe that sympathy is diluted by two-thirds when it arrives over the internet transom”.

In conclusion, although there are some valid reasons to support the creation of an organ market based on the principles of beneficence and autonomy, there are also many overriding reasons against the market. Allowing the existence of organ markets would theoretically increase the number of organ transplants by living donors, but the negative results that these organ markets will have on society are too grave. Thus, the usage of justice and nonmaleficence as guiding ethical principles precisely restricts the creation of the organ market as an ethical system.
Recent advancements in technology have changed society dramatically. Particularly, technology has improved communication throughout the world. The first form of communication other than speaking and letters ...
In order to reduce the chance of victimhood among the peoples there must be equality between them all. Rousseau discusses 'the right of the first occupant' in The Social Contract. He writes, "…the claimant occupies no more than he needs for subsistence…he takes possession…by actually working and cultivating the soil -- the only sign of ownership…"(Social, p.66) Each man receives what he needs from the common good and no more. Rousseau obviously wants people to be as equal as possible, and believes that once you enter the civil society you only have the right to what is yours and no more.
