Technology is a Benefit to Our Society
Over the last century, our world has evolved so much, because of the growth of the technological field. Although we spend a lot of money in order to gain new information, the reward goes far beyond the cost of money. In this case, the reward is the ability to save the lives of millions of people. In his essay, “The Technology of Medicine,” Lewis Thomas describes the three levels of technology; Nontechnology, Halfway Technology, and Effective Technology (582-583). “Nontechnology” has become the therapeutic part of technology, which helps patients through the emotional and mental effects that a disease can have on them. “Halfway Technology” is the name given to procedures, such as transplants, that prevent deaths of patients from the failure of certain organs of their bodies. However, the most important level is “Effective Technology” which consists of inventions used to help manage, eliminate or detect certain types of diseases before they have a chance to progress to higher levels within patients’ bodies. All these gadgets show that technology can be used as a benefit to humankind, only when used for the correct reasons to avoid such disasters as the cancer caused by bomb testing in Terry Williams’ essay, “The Clan of One-breasted Women.”
Effective technology has not only touched the lives of people living in the United States, but those living all around the world as well. Through the invention of immunizations, we have been able to eliminate many diseases, such as smallpox, that have caused the death of millions of people in past generations. {NEED A TOPIC SENTENCE} The very beginning of the story is a portrait of a happy everyday life in Milford - merry children are willing to make fun of a graver's gait, spruce bachelors are looking sidelong at the pretty maidens and a sexton is tolling the bell - and its light-hearted mood contrasts with that of the rest of the story. It gives us a taste of what the parson's life was like before his decision to wear his black veil.When Mr. Hooper appears wearing a black veil “[s]wathed about his forehead, and hanging down over his face, so low as to be shaken by his breath” (1) a period of alienation starts in his life. This event is not expected since Mr. Hooper is “a gentlemanly person” (1) and has the reputation of a “of a good preacher, but not an energetic one: he strove to win his people heavenward by mild, persuasive influences, rather than to drive them thither by the thunders of the Word” (2). The veil itself, Hawthorne tells us, consists of two folds of crape which entirely conceal Mr. Hooper's features, "except the mouth and chin, but probably did not intercept his sight, further than to give a darkened aspect to all living and inanimate things"(1). E. Earle Stibitz explains how Mr. Hopper’s is shown as an “essentially weak man, poorly prepared by his unmarried solitude, his somewhat morbid temperament, and his professional position to deal in a stable way with an absorbing religious idea that harmonizes with his personal and vocational prejudices(188).
The situations of technological flaws he chose as his examples added integrity to his arguments as well as proved his thesis. The author was skilled at explaining these examples profusely, thus further educating the readers and making them aware of how innovation can turn horribly wrong. One of Suzuki’s significant examples was the use of the DDT insecticide. The sole purpose of this chemical compound’s use was to kill malaria-carrying mosquitoes in hope of saving lives of those living in tropical climate countries. Although DDT did assist many, its use created more harm and damage than good. In Nathaniel Hawthorne’s, “The Minister’s Black Veil”, Mr. Hooper is wearing a mysterious black veil that covers his face. The minister does not want to tell anyone why he is wearing the black veil and everyone begins to look down upon him. The people in the town are frightened by the veil because they don’t understand his reasoning behind it. He feels the veil is a way to separate him from the rest of the world. The veil symbolizes the minister's self imposed loneliness; He sees the world darkened by fabric, and this symbolizes the darkness in a human’s soul and actions. The veil affects everyone’s perception of the minister and how others see him, also, how he views himself. Mr. Hooper faces a constant tension with society which disturbs his inner-self. Throughout “The Minister’s Black Veil”, Nathaniel Hawthorne uses a recurring conflict between darkness, a hidden man, and the standards of a society.
In terms of what is looked for in the Biomedical model, it is believed that there is one aetiology of the disease or illness exhibited in the patient who is then treated as a passive host of the illness where only the medical technology provided by the medical practitioner can hope to cure or at least care for the patient. While at one point in time this method of treatment seemed apt due to the knowledge of the world of that period, it is not a holistic approach of intervention because the main thought behind this model, as discussed by G. L. Engel (1977:129), is that because a disease or illness is characterized by “somatic parameters, physicians need not be concerned with psychosocial issues which lie outside medicine’s responsibility and authority.” This implies that following the Biomedical model, medical practitioners do not take into account the living situations, economic standpoints, racial, gender and ethical viewpoints or the community involvement factor of the patient seeking help.
The narrator describes the veil as "Swathed about his forehead, and hanging down over his face, so low as to be shaken by his breath" (Hawthorne 1130). Hooper's veil covers much of his face, only leaving open the mouth. Hawthorne continues, recounting that it "seemed to consist of two folds of crape, which entirely concealed his features, except the mouth and chin, but probably did not intercept his sight" (Hawthorne 1130). Hawthorne's elaboration on the veil provides readers with a more insightful description of how it appeared, saying that the veil was to "give a darkened aspect to all living and inanimate things" (Hawthorne 1130). It is important that Hawthorne mentions the newfound darkness the veil cast over Hooper's vision. This is important because evidently, something happened to Hooper to result in the presence of the veil. Hawthorne's addition is symbolic for the new way the reverend perceives the world and how the world perceives him – darker. In The Artist's Symbol and Hawthorne's Veil: "The Minister's Black Veil" Resartus, Freedman describes the veil as capable of stirring up "potent emotional effects" (Freedman). These emotions and opinions come from all characters in the story – including Hooper
Reverend Hooper has “nothing but one thing remarkable about his appearance.” That one thing being the pivotal symbol that Hawthorne uses throughout the story to convey the meaning behind his parable. Hanging from his forehead reaching down almost to be “shaken” by his breath, the Reverend has on a Black Veil. Mentioned before, Hawthorne uses the Black Veil as a symbol for secret sin, this being “those sad mysteries which [people] hide from [their] dearest, and would fain conceal from [their] own consciousness, even forgetting that the Omniscient can detect them.” The symbol in this story has both a contextual meaning as well as a universal meaning. As it pertains to the context of the story, the veil is intended to represent the secret sin of the Reverend himself. The reader never finds out what this may be, but in the end, the technicality of his sin is not what is important. Rather the fact that he has sinned is. Without technology, medicine would not be as advanced and there would not be as many medical procedures as there are today.
