Definition Essay - What is Art? There are few questions quite as esoteric or as futilely subjective as the philosopher's "What is…?" Yet posing and answering this question in reference to the identity of art is critical to further discussions of our subject matter in this course. There is no way for us to discuss art until we have a working definition of what art is; we can't adequately use the term until we've defined it. To this end, I would like to submit this as a working definition: "Art is anything created for the purpose of communicating the sensations of emotional response to, or creating emotional response in, those who experience it." There are three advantages to this sort of a definition for art. The first is that it does not limit us to specific media. Art by this definition can be found acted out on a stage, sent over a computer network, hung on a wall, or typed onto a page. The second is that it does not rely on the reaction of the audience to the art. The artist creates art whether or not his attempt at communication is success...
If I were to ask you what is art, and how can one find it? What would you say? Well if it were me being asked those question, I would simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design and it could be found all among us. You may define it differently only because art could be defined in many ways. I could simply say that art to me is a form of a picture; a visual painting or model of some design. Well according to an article written by Shelley Esaak, an art history expert she mentioned that art has a way of stimulating different parts of our brains to make us laugh or incite us to riot, with a whole gamut of emotions in between. She also mentioned that art gives us a way to be creative and express ourselves. [1]
The United States has a larger percent of its population incarcerated than any other country. America is responsible for a quarter of the world’s inmates, and its incarceration rate is growing exponentially. The expense generated by these overcrowded prisons cost the country a substantial amount of money every year. While people are incarcerated for a number of reasons, the country’s prisons are focused on punishment rather than reform, and the result is a misguided system that fails to rehabilitate criminals or discourage crime. The ineffectiveness of the United States’ criminal justice system is caused by mass incarceration of non-violent offenders, racial profiling, and a high rate of recidivism.
According to the Oxford dictionary, Art is an expression or application of human creative skill and imagination producing works to be appreciated primarily for their beauty or emotional power. (oxforddictionaries.com). In the area of the Arts, it seems that knowledge is attained through a holistic lens, where its approach towards knowledge emphasizes the whole of an artwork rather than their constituent parts (simplyphyschology.com). Art can be accessible since the audience is able to experience it directly, with the help of our senses. As viewer we enjoy aesthetic pleasure, which involves an appreciation of the contents in relation to vehicles or supports. (Levinson, 1996) In fact, according to Jerrold Levinson’s ‘The Pleasures of Aesthetics’
On August 14th, 2003, a major blackout swept across portions of the northeastern United States and Canada. It was reported that a series of equipment outages in the Midwest led to uncontrolled cascading outages of power transmission lines and generators serving parts of the Northeast, Midwest and Canada. Automatic protective systems operated to open circuits and shut down power plants to prevent further spread of the outages. This is very similar to what happened in The Great Northeast Blackout of 1965. In both situations, the “grid system” shut down one generator in line at a time to protect a surge from the station before it.
False beliefs regarding crime and the criminal justice system are often created by media coverage. Statistics on crime rates, violent crimes, racial involvement, and juvenile crime are often misrepresented, allowing a fear of crime by society. These crime myths tend to cause public fear to turn to more punitive solutions and harsh penalties for criminals. However, many Americans also desire to rehabilitate and examine the underlying causes of crime. To understand the possible forms of punishment, one may look at the ...
Kafka, Franz. The Metamorphosis. Literature: An Introduction to Fiction, Poetry, Drama and Writing. Ed. X. J. Kennedy and Dana Gioia. 7th Compact Ed. New York: Longman, 2013. 268-98. Print.
Franz Kafka wrote the short story Metamorphosis in 1912. No one can truly know what he aimed to accomplish with the story, but it is thought he wrote it to demonstrate the absurdity of life. The story is written with a very simplistic undertone, ignoring how completely ludicrous the situation that Gregor Samsa and his family are in. Metamorphosis is most often thought of in the scientific meaning of the word, which according to dictionary.com is a profound change in form from one stage to the next in the life history of an organism. It is also defined as a complete change of form, structure, or substance, as transformation by magic or witchcraft or any complete change in appearance, character, circumstances, etc. This word is generally reserved for describing how a caterpillar turns into a butterfly, a good analogy for the process of metamorphosis. It brings to mind a pleasant event, very unlike what Gregor and his family experience. We as readers only get to see things through Gregor’s eyes. Does this skew our understanding of the story, and how do Gregor and Grete’s metamorphoses differ, and how are they alike?
Louis Pasteur was born in Dole, France in 1822. He was born the son of a poor tanner, so growing up his social status was low. However, he was able to go to school. At first, though, he did not study science he studied math. He then studied science in eastern France, when in college, and his professor even said that he was “mediocre in chemistry” (Hart). After receiving his doctorate in 1847 he was quick, however to prove that his professor had been quite wrong. His research regarding isomers of tartaric acid made his name well known around the world by the age of only 26.
Crime is an extremely prominent part of American society. Recorded activity within the US saw 10,329,135 (1,246,248 violent crimes and 9,082,887 property crimes) crimes perpetrated with 62.5% of all violent crimes pertained to aggravated assault and 68.2% of all property crimes were considered larceny-theft in 2010. (FBI.2011) Despite the large number of crimes the United States also has the largest number of incarcerated citizens per capita in the world with nearly a quarter of the world’s prisoners coming from the United States’ 5% of the world population. This is due to much harder punishments in the US than those that are given a shorter longer period of incarceration or merely fined in other countries.(Liptak 2008) Due to the prevalence of crime in the US, economists have used models to explain the behavior and ramifications of government actions and the motivations behind crime and its effect on society that psychologists and sociologists are usually unable to address.
Frieda Kahlo was born Magdalena Carmen Frieda Kahlo y Calderon in Coyoacan, Mexico, July 6th, 1907. She did not in the first place plan to become a creator; she entered a pre-Master of Education system in Mexico City. She endured more than large integer dealing in her brio time and during her convalescence she began to discomfit. Her beaux-arts, mostly self-portraits and still life, filled with the colors and forms of Mexican folk art. Frieda created some 200 spacing’s, artistic production and sketches germane to her education in life, physical and aroused pain and her churning relationship with her ex husband Diego. She produced 143 beaux arts, lv of which are self-portraits. At the time of her exhibition first step, Frieda’s health was such that her Doctor told her that she was not to leave her patch. She insisted that she was going to wait on her opening, and, in Frieda style, she did. She arrived in an ambulance and her bed in the backward of a transport. She was placed in her bed and four men carried her in to the waiting guests.
Before proposing a reform to the American criminal justice system, we must first examine the problems that plague the process of justice on all levels. American society plays an important role in shaping the criminal justice system. Their beliefs and values determine the type of deviants and the consequences of the crimes. Often their beliefs contradict each other.
Transient stability was detected as a threat in power system since 1920. In the earlier stage the problems were concerned with the far away situated generating unit supplying the load centers with long overhead transmission lines. The importance of this phenomenon was increased due to lots of blackouts. The industries were the most concerning with these kind of problem because interruption in the supply leads them into losses. It was one of the most dangerous problems on the system. As continue progress of the power system begins Instability of various kind, implementation of new technologies, tough operating condition have been developed. Power system stability had become a important topic in which voltage stability, inter area oscillation and frequency stability have more of concern. A deep understanding of different kinds of faults and their prone to unstable condition and how they are related to each other are very important to design and implementation of the power system. For analyzing power system stability, graphical methods like power circle diagram and equal area criterion ...
From Mark Twain to Vincent van Gogh, each genre of art comes with its greatest master. There are many compelling arguments to why this specific artist, musician or writer is the best in their category. In modern days, we don’t have a Mozart, or a Hemingway or even an Andy Warhol. There are many good artists of their own kind and many more are emerging thanks to new technology and new forms of media art. However, many arguments are made as to why these forms of art aren’t considered true forms of art. A few years back and even today, many argue that digital paintings aren’t real art so it is not surprising when people don’t think of a video game as an art form, but it is. The world is at constant change and so is art.

In final consideration the character Gregor was not a narcissistic man as we mostly assumed from his attitude in The Metamorphosis. He accepted his fate of becoming one of the misted hated and annoying insects known to man. As supported by scholarly journals, academic websites, and books I have verified my belief that the story The Metamorphosis was a true autobiographical piece of writing, and parts of the story reflected Kafka's own life. The protagonist of the story The Metamorphosis is a mirrored reflection of the author Franz Kafka's life experiences and encounters. Secondly the analysis of the story is addressed to all general population.
