Investigation of Information Systems
1. Definition of an Information System:
An Information System is a combination of hardware, software, people,
procedures and data that provides data processing capabilities for a
business or organization.
More sophisticated information systems provide the decision makers in
a business (eg. the executives or managers) with on-demand reports and
inquiry capabilities as well as routine periodic reports.
2. Capabilities of Information Systems:
All information systems have four essential capabilities:
Input
Processing
Storage
Output
i. Input can come from:
a. Source data such as recording a transaction or an event (eg. a
bank deposit slip or order form).
b. an Inquiry, which is a request for information (eg. list this
week's sales above $3000)
c. a Response to a prompt (eg. a Y or a N)
d. an Instruction (eg. "Print File", "Save File")
e. a Message to another user on the system (g. intranet mail)
f. a Change (eg. editing a record)
ii. Processing capabilities include:
a. Sorting data (eg. sorting a customer file alphabetically)
d. Retrieving, recording and updating data in storage (eg. a
customer record)
e. Summarizing processes (eg. totals and subtotals)
f. Selecting processes (eg. select employees that have been
employed for more than 5 years)
g. Manipulating processes (eg. performing arithmetic calculations
and logic operations).
iii. Storage capabilities enable data, text, graphics, voice, sound,
music, and other digital information to be recalled easily for

The knowledge base they rely on is the accumulation of knowledge of a
number of experts (the domain expert) on the particular subject.
Coupled with an expert system shell, which is the software used to
interrogate the knowledge base, the knowledge base can be put to work
logically recommending alternatives to current problems.
Expert systems have been developed for subjects such as medical
diagnosis, oil exploration, financial planning, taxation return
preparation, chemical analysis, surgery, weather prediction, computer
repair, nuclear power plant operation, newspaper layout, interpreting
government regulation, and troubleshooting computer systems
configurations (eg. MS Help).
This assignment will focus on the importance of information systems for running and managing a business today. An information system is an integrated set of components for collecting, storing, and processing data and for providing information, knowledge, and digital products. Business firms and other organizations rely on information systems to carry out and manage their operations, interact with their customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace. Information systems are used to run interorganizational supply chains and electronic markets. Encyclopaedia Britannica. (2017). information system. The most common purpose for (BI) systems is to aid in the decision making process. BI systems collect data, store the gathered information in data warehouses, analyze the data and then present the data in easy to understand applications for the decision making process. The following studies research the role that BI systems play in the decision making process.
Information systems are a vital necessity to healthcare institutions in the United States and other nations with the ominous need to keep up with technology, research, and science in the 21st. Century. Most of healthcare institutions in Africa still depend on physical documentation, written by hand and afterword’s stored in binders locked away in storing facilities. With the growing populace in Africa, gathering information concerning patients health documents is costly, hard to maintain, and unethical. Therefore, in this case scenario I’m going to target my research, in developing countries in Africa in general, who are striving to improve ideal management information system. The goal is to aim efforts to improve public health through enhanced supervision through healthcare information, such the ability to collect, store and analyze accurate health data, service transfer proficiency, improve data accuracy, value of involvement, increase accountability and to learn about trends. The objective of this information system is to record information on health events and check the quality of services at different stages of health care. The data collected will also help to notify forthcoming healthcare policy determinations.
An information system is a “collection of software, hardware, procedures, data and computer networks used by people in organizations” (). Managers can use computer-based
The SDLC is a problem-solving process which through a series of steps helps produce a new computer information system. Each step from system planning, system analysis, system design, system implementation and to system maintenance conducted in sequence should provide the answers to a problem or opportunity (Farah, 2006). An example may be a user which employs an order system may sense a problem with that system because customers may complain that orders are late or being lost. The SDLC through the steps previously mentioned would help correct and improve the system and operations of the order entry process (real life situation at KCI Medical Canada-Vancouver office). In this example, the system planning phase determines whether a new order entry process should be developed. The system analysis phase helps the analyst study the current system in place (order taken over the phone and input to an excel spreadsheet) and determines what shortcomings the new system must overcome (why are orders lost or delivery of product so late?) to ensure smooth operations within the order entry process. During the next stage, system design, the analyst specifies how the new system will operate. This is followed by the implementation phase where programs are acquired and tested to accommodate the new order entry process. Finally the system maintenance phase reviews the new order entry system to ensure smooth operations and modifications as needed.
This project gives an insight of the company’s Information technology and information systems, their impact on the market and on the company. It also explains the problem faced by the company before implementation of any of the solutions. And then explains the IT solution adopted by the company. It is followed by the results and consequences of the implementation of the program.
Information system would be flexible to supply alternate ways of processing data and assigning rate to different decision variables. Information systems should include not only the relevant factors that can be quantified but also the factors that cannot be quantified. Information systems should be flexible enough to absorb the inevitable changes in the information needs of business.
Information system, an integrated set of components for the gathering storage and processing of data and for transport information, knowledge and digital goods. Business enterprises and other organizations rely on information systems to accomplish and manage their operations, to act together with their customers and suppliers, and compete in the marketplace.

I am currently employed as a Software Engineering Senior Analyst at Accenture. The Information system advances so rapidly that at times it is too difficult to keep up with it without proper knowledge and experience. While most of the people do get a relatively easy entry in the field after under graduation, it is very difficult to aim for a constant growth only on that basis. The field demands upgraded knowledge and experience for career growth and (achieve goals). And that is why I aspire, to pursue Masters in Management Information Systems at your esteemed University.
A company that has fallen behind the competition with other companies in their services, that state is known as competitive disadvantage. It has emerged as a factor because business which can’t stay constant and frequently change their state on the cutting edge of IT can drop down in the competition, given the current fast pace of technological advances. It is a main factor because most of the organizations have an IT system in the present time. Therefore all the organizations need to improve their IT systems to avoid the drop down when compared with different organizations. Organizations finance in information security for a lot of reasons, from a business perspective, any organization is inspired to ensure or be secure against aggressive burden.
Asemi observe that Management Information System (MIS) is one of the information systems that is computer based. Besides, Asemi defines MIS as “an organizational method of providing past, present and project information related to internal operations and external intelligences. It supports the planning, control and operation functions of an organization by furnishing uniform information in the proper time frame to assist the decision makers,” (2011). The aim of MIS is to satisfy the general information need of the entire manager in an organization. Before the advent of computers, the process of decision-making was one that was full of built-in advantages and ad hoc methods. Computers technologies have changed the landscape of the decision-making process completely by making the process less demanding and easy to undertake. The reason for this situation is that information technology has made access to information more automated, efficient, effective, timely, and less ambiguous. Consequently, the ordinary t...
In this stage the current system is analysed to determine the functions it performs and those that it is unable to perform. Direct and indirect users of the new system are interviewed to determine what they require from the new system. The inputs to the new system, the processes it is to perform and the outputs from the system are clearly defined. A recommendation is made about the type of new system that will be required to meet the identified needs.
The program that I have chosen is Bachelor of Information Technology (Hons) Business Information Management in HELP University. The aim of this program is to provide understanding of the issues involved in develop and managing information systems in a current business context. This program also gives students the appropriate knowledge and skills to enable them to adopt with the field of managing and developing effective information systems in business environment.
The changes that have occurred as a result of this information system - how were these information tasks performed in the past (before the computer technology), how has information technology changed the way things are now done.
