The Change in Modern Religion “In modern society religious beliefs and religious behaviors are
changing rather than declining” Assess the argument for and against
this view.
The term Modern Religion in this essay will refer to the religion in
the 20th century (i.e. from the 1900’s). Also to reduce confusion I
will focus mainly on religion within the UK I will term the phrase
religious beliefs and religious behaviors to be related with the
exclusive definition of religion. Which means a belief in god or a
high being and participating in religious practice.
There are many views on whether or not religion is declining in this
essay I aim to outline and explain different ideas given for and
against the idea. Bruce and Wilson agree with the statement and
believe that religion is declining, however Davie and Shiner are just
some sociologists that believe religion is changing.
In sociology there is a name attributed to the decline of religion,
this is secularization however there is dispute between sociologists
on the usefulness of this term as it can be much broader. However for
the purpose of this essay it will mean the decline of religion.

is declining rather than changing”. Christian church membership in

The secularization paradigm Bruce argues ‘is a set of associated explanations rather than a single theory’ (Pg.43). To build on this argument Bruce provides us with a diagram of the secularization paradigm with 22 key contributing factors; some showing the religiosity of societies i.e. the protestant reformation and monotheism, some exploring other factors which have contributed towards secularization such as Industrial Capitalism, Technological Consciousness and Social Differentiation and he provides an explanation of these concepts in order to provide the reader with an analysis of these themes. Habermas et al (2008:21) takes the position that in a post-secular society, religion still maintains a public influence and relevance, whilst the secularisation thesis assumption that religion will disappear through modernisation is tentative. Post-Christian societies describe a particular era of the secularisation process and thus could be applied to the United Kingdom where non-religion is rapidly increasing and Christianity is changing. Secularisation is understood here as a de-institutionalisation. However, other societies and countries like Estonia that are further in the process of secularisation and as such would not be considered a Christian country may not be best fitted.
Between the years 600 CE and 1450 CE in Europe, there was only one thing that stayed constant, and it was the Roman Catholic Church. The church remained a major influence on the people of Europe and the majority of the region continued to believe every single thing that the church preached. The only thing that did not stay constant was who had the power over the church and how the church made sure that everyone was following their rules that they had created. The church had varying teaching over the course of many years. It was also used as a tool for the rulers of that time.

The Renaissance period brought about changes in the cultural and social arrangements of the people living during this era. The Catholic Church was still the major religion during this era. One of the major strengths of the Catholic Church during the beginning of the Renaissance was its ability to hold the norms and traditions of the society. During the Renaissance period, the church was an integral part of the society. It defined what rules and regulations people were to follow and how they lived their lives. The Catholic Church provided an avenue for people to hold onto the cultural and social beliefs they had developed over time (Wolffe 89). In the midst of all the changes that were taking place at the time, it was important to find a way to retain the traditions that the people had followed for so long. Even with the growing opposition to the Catholic Church, people still held onto some of the teachings that had become part of them as taught by the church. In fact, even when people moved away from the Catholic Church, they still carried some of the traditions as defined by the Catholic Church. In addition the Catholic Church also provided a well defined hierarchy in the church. There lineage of the church was well developed and people had become familiar with it. This was a positive aspect since people were familiar with the structure of the Catholic Church.

Mr. Houston fellow students, “What were the reasons for the decline of Catholicism in America since 1945”, this has been the topic of my research for the previous three terms. The previous analogy, although being far fetched, if you put it into perspective outlines my opinion on the development of Catholicism since 1945 to the present day. That initially we followed the Catholic Church unquestionably and devoutly, mass on Sundays, fish on Fridays (etc). But as society modernized and became increasingly secular in education, the media and politics, people began to question some of the church teachings and the church authorities. Though the church, lead by conservatives initially would not change. As Catholics began to move away, the church realizing the situation reassessed their position at Vatican 2, which resulted in the modernized Catholic Church. Consequently from here catholic membership began to increase, however the nature of Catholicism changed.

But in all of its traditional forms, the supernatural religious worldview makes the assumption that the universe and its inhabitants have been designed and created by "forces" or beings which transcend the material world. The material world is postulated to reflect a mysterious plan originating in these forces or beings, a plan which is knowable by humans only to the extent that it has been revealed to an exclusive few. Criticising or questioning any part of this plan is strongly discouraged, especially where it touches on questions of morals or ethics. Science, on the other hand, assumes that there are no transcendent, immaterial forces and that all forces which do exist within the universe behave in an ultimately objective or random fashion. The nature of these forces, and all other scientific knowledge, is revealed only through human effort in a dynamic process of inquiry. The universe as a whole is assumed to be neutral to human concerns and to be open to any and all questions, even those concerning human ethical relationships. The sociological approach looks at religious belief and practice in relation to the society. Sociologists are interested in two themes, the centrality of religion in society and the diversity of forms it inhabits (Hamilton 1995/2001:1). It regards religion as a social fact subject to empirical observation, which produces empirical evidence (Dillon 2003:7). The sociology of religion is a product of the enlightenment, from which it inherited a tendency to dismiss religion as incompatible with rationality (Dillon 2003:6). This dismissal has had significant impact on the attitude towards religion and it is the basis for the most influential paradigm in the history of the field; secularisation. The secularisation theory claims that religion is or will be on the decrease in society. So profound was its impact that modern sociology often aims to account for the continued presence of religion in society and has generally held a rather negative view of religion as being an unworthy subject of study(Davies 2007:2).
Luther’s later years following his excommunication were not nearly as central to the fractioning of the Catholic church. He would, in fact, later distance himself from the more radical followers that would characterize some the years immediately following his writings. His primary contributions to the Protestant faith were his writings and the notion that salvation should be rooted in faith rather than practice. His influence on Western Christianity is immeasurable, and is best examined by understanding the development of Protestant church and its modern manifestations.
