Laura Esquivel's Like Water for Chocolate The novel “Like Water for Chocolate” written by Laura Esquivel is a historical piece of South-American literature which is parallel to the Mexican Revolution which took place at the start of the twentieth century. The De La Garza family in the novel emphasizes certain similarities with the things going on during the Mexican Revolution, especially with the people in the lower rank. One important structural device used in the novel is the use of recipes which is found in each chapter and sets the overall mood and atmosphere for that particular chapter, the mood or feelings of Tita. This mood found in each chapter can be reflected to the feelings that people felt during the revolution. Tita represents the people in the lower class and recipes are the different leaders during the revolutions. This therefore means that people had different feelings as they were under different leaders from time to time, just like Tita’s recipes. Tita’s hand-made cookbook, which was passed down to the narrator via Esperanza, calls the attention to the personalization of historical discourage concerning the Mexican Revolution. The novel seems to be primarily concerned with the feminine identity and contribution to the Mexican identity. The central focus of the novel is therefore the creation of feminine freedom, part of that is the kitchen which could be reflected to real women’s lives. It directs attention to the social situation of Mexican women in the early 20th century who were lower in rank in terms of their social status. All in all, Laura Esquivel showed a lot of parallels between her novel and the Mexican Revolution. Most of the materials in the novel seemed to have only one meaning, but after reading and comparing the novel with the actual Mexican Revolution, it became clear that almost every single character in the novel had their own role during the revolution. Even the kitchen and recipes can be parallel in some ways which makes this novel a very historical piece of literature which contains lots of truth about what life was like during the revolution. Characters- The Main character in this book is Celeste Harris. Celeste was always known for being called the fat girl. One day she was shopping with her mom, her cousin Kirsten and her aunt Doreen for Celeste’s other cousin Kathleen’s wedding. (pg . 1-10) They saw an ad to be a model at Huskey Peach (a clothes brand for heavier people). (pg.10) Behind Celeste’s back, her aunt sends in an application for her. Celetse then gets a letter in the mail saying she qualified for the Huskey Peach fashion show.(pg.36) Celeste is very embarresd and doesn’t want to do it but the rest of her family wants her to. Industrialization had a major impact on the lives of every American, including women. Before the era of industrialization, around the 1790's, a typical home scene depicted women carding and spinning while the man in the family weaves (Doc F). One statistic shows that men dominated women in the factory work, while women took over teaching and domestic services (Doc G). This information all relates to the changes in women because they were being discriminated against and given children's work while the men worked in factories all day. Women wanted to be given an equal chance, just as the men had been given.
Evidence suggests that families often enjoyed everyday leisure but in reality working class social life was divided by gender. Married women’s leisure tended to be separate from the public domain and was not very different from work, but was linked with domestic duties and family relations. It was during this period that to survive families had to send their sons and daughters into the labor force to supplement the earnings of the father, while the mother cooked, cleaned, cared for the children and manufactured goods in the home. The typical wage-earning woman of 1900 was young and single.

Like Water for Chocolate—a novel rich in history, culture, food, and scandal; a breathtaking portrayal of a love affair, of the strength of character of desperate women, and of humbling traditions—captivates both the soul and mind, enchanting its readers by way of causing them to become immersed in its story-line. Prominent among its themes is that of finding an identity—or a lack thereof—which seems to pervade the lives of those most engaged in the process of self evaluation and discovery, and as such Laura Esquivel’s novel is comparable to Haruki Murakami’s The Elephant Vanishes, in which the characters from several stories seem to be in a state of perpetual dislocation and disconnection from the world around them. Tita in Esquivel’s novel, best portrays this struggle of gaining personal identity and freedom amidst repressive, external forces, while specific characters from stories in Murakami’s collection such as “Sleep”, “The Wind-Up Bird and Tuesday’s Women”, or “A Slow Boat to China”, reflect a struggle that arises instead from both external and internal forces. Particularly important however, is Esquivel and Murakami’s contrasting approach to addressing the theme—be it through symbolism, language or characterization—that requires close critique.

This created a generation of women who wanted more out of life than birthing children, and keeping a nice home for their husband. Whether you are an overworked housewife or an exhausted working mother the chances are that you are always one step behind your schedule. No matter how hard women worked, they never ended up with clean homes. Housewives in these miserable circumstances often became hysterical cleaners. They wore their lives away in an endless round of scouring, scrubbing, and polishing. The increased strain in working women comes from the reality that they carry most of the child-rearing and household responsibilities. According to social trends (1996), women always or usually do the washing in 79 percent of cases and decide the menu 59 percent of the time. Picking up the children at school or doing grocery shopping are just a few of the many typical household-tasks a woman takes on every day.
