The Revolutions of 1848 During the year of 1848, a revolutionary tide broke out in Europe.

Revolutions were emerging in different parts of Europe at the same

time and quickly spread from France to Italy to Germany, Austria,

Hungary and other parts of the continent. A series of revolutions

swept across Europe in hopes to bring a liberal reform. This

revolution was a revolt of the working and lower class to gain

economic and political rights Although the countries are very

different from each other the issues and the demands of the people

were very similar around Europe.

Across Europe the people demanded liberalism, nationalism and

romanticism. The demands started out with the political liberal

reforms, but after a while the working class started to demand social

and economic changes. The working class all over Europe was looking

for a change in the government. With the help of the media, ideas such

as democracy and the need for universal manhood suffrage started to be

advocated for. “Liberals sought a genuinely representative

government, based on limited suffrage-only those with property and

education should vote. They wanted protection from freedoms of

thought, speech, publication, and assembly. They wanted efficient

government chosen for their talents, not their birth or status. They

wanted full equality under the laws. They favored economic

development, and intended to eradicate legal restricti...
