Greater Manchester Police (GMP) as More User Friendly
The phrase ‘being user friendly’ means adapting and making changes for
the better for the public as they are the people who pay for the
service of the police force. The GMP have brought in new aims and
objectivities to make their services more user friendly. Here are
some of the things which they have done;
v The GMP have published many of their documents in different
languages such as: Urdu, Farsi, Canonise and Punjabi. These are also
available in large print for people whose eyesight is not 100%.
v The GMP also have interpreters on hand for both victims and suspects
to communicate with the police officers.
v Greater Manchester Police believe, ‘… good communication is an
important way to develop equality of opportunity for all members of
society. This can be difficult for anyone whose first language is not
English, is deaf or has impaired hearing, or is blind and has impaired
sight. We are committed to making suitable facilities available and
accessible to help the public and our staff communicate effectively.’

v Greater Manchester Police have took action and improved on employing
and training people who are from under-represented groups at all
levels, this is so that these people have equality and opportunities
at all levels.
v GMP have community police officers who visit many places in
Manchester. These are places such as community centres etc. This is
so that the public can get to know their local police officer, they
can talk and communicate with them more. This also makes the public
feel safer.

Surveys
Greater Manchester Police taken out a survey on the basis of a career
development questionnaire, this found that 60% shown that they would
engage in activities designed to enhance their career progression.
Although the survey did show that a small minority of ethnic officers
found that they have felt racism hit them at one point, but the
majority of ethnic officers found that they have comparable
experiences to their white counterparts.
There was also a similar sort of survey taken out with the ethnic
support staff. This shown that 72% of the support staff were
satisfied with the career opportunities that are available for them at
Greater Manchester Police.
The Thompson Valley Police Service is seeking to double the number of police recruits over the next three years. In an attempt to attract more applicants, the newly appointed Police Commissioner, Commissioner Jason DeVillain is proposing two key changes to the current selection process. Firstly, Commissioner DeVillain is proposing to eliminate the requirement for partial or completed tertiary education. Secondly, it is being proposed that psychological testing should be removed from the selection process. As a research and policy officer for the Thompson Valley Police Service, the validity and likely impact of the above two proposed changes will be investigated thoroughly, followed by recommendations to Commissioner DeVillain to ensure the selection process is as effective as possible in selecting the most suitable candidates for the new police recruits. William Westley’s study looked at policemen operating at the street level. Fogelson’s study focused mainly on the management level in policing, which has tended to be somewhat cut off from street level policing. Goldstein’s study examined policing at the political level where a police department encounters the currents of local government. The future of policing is fairly clear in what direction it is heading. It has been slowly reforming to meet the needs of the people, reduce crime, and make policing more efficient. Some of the reforms that will probably take place in the future include, better educated police officers and police managers, consolidation of police departments to save on money and resources, upgraded technology, race and gender equality, better testing techniques to recruit and promote within the department, and improved proactive planning techniques. One of these proactive tools that will surely become more widely used and implemented better is community policing. It has been evolving since its first introduction into the police world and will see more reforms in the future. Compstat should also become more widely used by almost all police departments to make those in charge more accountable and for improved crime mapping.

The role of police in their communities and society as a whole, is an interesting and unique position. They are citizens that are responsible for policing fellow, equal citizens and are the extensive arm of the government. Cops need to consider a few things before they conduct a lineup. The police should discuss the lineup with the prosecutor, for legal sense, before conducting a lineup. A lineup should be directly after an arrest. This will help eliminate innocent people. A lineup makes sure the witness has a good and clear memory, and ensures that the criminal doesn’t get released before he/she gets identified. “A person in custody may be compelled to participate in a lineup without violating Fourth or Fifth Amendment right” Ferdico, Fradella, & Totten, 2013). Good communication is essential to how well police officers interact with the public because it influences how the public responds to officers. Listening, speaking, writing and focusing on what others say are all ways officers can affect the way the public views them. A lack of these vital communications skills results in poor understanding, an officer not knowing how to proceed, and people who need police assistance giving up. Officers must also consider how communication might affect a community’s reaction. It is obvious that these traits are very important for optimal police work. Experiences show that people react more calmly and cooperatively when police officers treat them well. Therefore, good communication is needed in order to make the jobs of police officers easier and more positive.
The police must be active members in their community to understand the people they are protecting and how they can be proactive in the crime prevention in that given community. For the second question in the survey I stated that it is the public’s job to obey the law and make the police’s job easier and not more difficult. Once again, I was close minded in my answer. The public is tasked with policing the police; however, it does not mean they are making the police’s job more difficult, it is just about holding them accountable for their actions. Police require a wide set of characteristics, if they want to be successful during the application process and enjoy a long career in public safety. When asked in the survey at the start of this course, I answered that an officer requires the ability to treat all people fairly in all situations. This is a phenomenal quality for a police officer to have, but it is just one of many that an officer must possess. Adaptability was the first the trait that stood out me, when reading the modules, because it is essential for a new and old officer to continue to grow and adapt.
In order to understand the attitudes towards police work and the actions of police officers one can make use of the Structure-agency debate which has three distinct perspectives; structure, agency and structuration.
