What is MTBE and Why we should be Concerned !!
MTBE stands for Methyl Tertiary Butyl Ether. In 1990 congress passed the Clean
Air Act to reduce smog in cities that were listed as ozone non-attainment area. Congress mandated Reformulated Gasoline (RFG) as part of the act. Congress mandated as part of it formula, a 2% by weight oxygenate to be added to RFG to reduce hydrocarbon SMOG pollutants from automobile exhaust emissions.
MTBE is a chemical, which promotes more complete combustion by adding oxygen to gasoline. This increases the temperature at which gasoline burns in the engine and reduces the amount of harmful vehicle exhaust emissions, such as carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, and hydrocarbons. MTBE is manufactured by combining isobutylene (a waste product in the gasoline refining process) and methanol (produced from natural gas). It is a colorless flammable liquid at room temperature with turpentine like color.
MTBE evaporates quickly from surface water, soil or open containers. MTBE is not expected to persist in the atmosphere because of its rapid reaction with hydroxyl radicals and its degradation by sunlight. However, it may also contribute to the formation of photochemical smog when it reacts with other volatile organic compounds in the atmosphere. Once in the air, MTBE can mix with precipitation that can eventually carry MTBE to groundwater or surface water.
MTBE is highly soluble in water and very mobile in the subsurface. It enters groundwater quickly because it does not bind well with soil and persists due to a lack of anaerobic or aerobic biodegradation. Water supplies view MTBE as the most menacing ingredient of gasoline leaked from underground...

Every underground gas tank eventually leaks, and the gasoline is soaked up by the surrounding ground. MTBE is not soluble in water; therefore, when the gasoline leaks out of the tank, the MTBE pollutes the ground water (well water), and eventually the surface water also. In addition, though MTBE reduces the amount of most pollutants released from automobiles, it also produces a harmful pollutant, formaldehyde, when combusted [CECA]. Even worse, a study performed by a medical researcher from the University of Pennsylvania, shows that MTBE may be the cause of a seventeen percent increase in asthma among kindergarten students since it has been utilized in gasoline. The study also shows that MTBE has failed to improve smog levels in the years it has been in use [Jones].

The mental illness was later named, ADD or ADHD, and not known as an illness but as a disorder. Soon enough ADD was no longer used for diagnoses and became considered an outdated term among doctors. Therefore, instead of ADD and ADHD being two different types of disorders they are now both claimed as attention deficit hyperactive disorder. Although these two types of deficits have inattention difficulties as the primary symptom, they both can not be combined due to ADD having its own preferences on what makes the child or adult inattentive in day to day situations.

Blackrock, Iowa, April 12, 2014 – Owned by the parent company Raina Inc., the Carborundum plant in Blackrock, has made a major announcement on its pollution reduction strategy through its manager, Leslie Sludge, who appeared at the Blackrock City Council hearing on April 11. The manager of Blackrock Plant, Leslie Sludge, announced that the company had adopted a new initiative that is underway, in order to abate the high level of pollution caused by the plant. He also addressed the effects of the plant on the citizens of Blackrock, as well as the effects on the environment. Going by the words of Leslie Sludge, so far, the Blackrock Carborundum plant has utilized $5.3 million in efforts aimed at reducing the high level of pollution caused by the plant. In the new initiative to reduce the high level of pollution, the Blackrock Carborundum plant has already committed an additional $2 million. This will be used in pollution-control activities that are spread in the next three months. The plant anticipates that a large part of this money will be utilized on removal of noxious particles from the air and water waste.
This means one of two things needs to be done, the chemicals needs to be preserved properly or disposed of in the correct manner (Inglesby, Nyquist, Jenks, and, Pinner 34). This produces a problem because the possibility of chemicals contaminating the drinking water used for the nearby cities. According to the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), they have found groundwater pollution that was caused by fracking (Inglesby et. Al. 35). However, oil companies are taking action to change the techniques used by fracking to help prevent contamination. But, according to Tommy Inglesby et. Al. “this area is likely to be the focus of considerably more technological innovation in the future”
Not mentioned in the report is a technique called bioremediation, which uses microbes to clean up the hazardous waste. Some small natural organisms, such as bacteria, can eat, digest and gain energy from contaminants, converting them into small amounts of water or innocuous gases. Specific conditions must be present for bioremediation to be successful. Natural amendments can be added if ideal conditions are not present, or contaminated soil can be treated ex situ. Traditionally, it takes anywhere between a few months and several years for bioremediation to fully clean a Superfund site, depending on the size of the site and extent of contamination. Bioremediation is currently being used to clean up contaminated groundwater at the Iceland Coin Laundry Superfund Site in New Jersey (EPA, n.d.). Additionally, experiments are currently underway to determine if fungi can help remediate some of the contamination at the Newtown Creek Superfund Site in New York City (Parry, 2012). As an all-natural alternative, bioremediation is a particularly appealing clean up method. If ideal conditions for microbial growth are not present at the Portland Harbor Superfund site, bioremediation could be a good ex situ treatment

Throughout the last five millenniums, there have been many amazing empires. Ostensibly successful was the Indus River Valley from 2500-1500 BCE, and Ancient Greece from 750-338 BCE. Later, the empire of Aksum existed from 100-750 CE. All these empires were built because of their exceptional locations, therefore proving that geography is clearly the mother of history. Despite unpredictable flooding, the Indus River Valley prospered to the best of their ability. Meanwhile, Greece had serious issues concerning arable land, but they managed to overcome this and become a great empire was well. Finally, like Greece, Aksum was also located on hilly land, but overcame this challenge and became a major trading power in Africa, using the surrounding waterways.. Clearly, geography was a major factor in the success of these empires.
Physical geography has shaped humans, our cultures, and our societies. Physical geography refers to the weather, climate, or agriculture of a certain region. Humans cannot control the weather so, so we must adapt whatever nature brings our way. Specific life styles must come and go, and we must be able to shift from one condition to another. How has physical geography shaped the world we live in today?
The Five Themes of Geography are: Location – Absolute points on a map or grid or Relative to where something may be; Place – The physical and/or human characteristics of a locations; Human/Environment Interactions – How humans have impacted the landscape or environment; Relationship between places Movement – How humans interact on the earth (i.e. how they communicate over distance (short or long)) and Regions – a unit of space that has commonalities defined by physical, human and environmental geography. The Explorers of the New World may have not known what the Five Themes of Geography were but they quickly learned. Of the five themes the ones that they all took advantage of was the physical Location and Place as they learned to navigate to and from as well as through their new environments. Over Time the explorers began to discover the relationships within their environments and original occupants of the lands as well as the regions in which they now occupied.
There are five themes of geography which include location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region. The country that I was given to describe the five themes is the United Kingdom also known as the UK.
