A biome, also known as life zones, consists of all plants, animals, and other organisms, as well the physical environment in a particular area. A biome is characterized by its’ plant life, climate, and location. The climate and physical features determine the boundaries of a biome. A biome is made up of many different ecosystems. The ecosystems tend to have the same pants and animals as neighboring biomes around the boundaries. The major biomes are the tundra, taiga, tropical rain forest, temperate forests, desert, grassland, savanna, chaparral, and marine. Each biome has it’s own characteristics such as the tundra.
The tundra is a biome that is located in the Northern Hemisphere of the world. It circles the North Pole and reaches down to the taiga. The tundra has a very cold and harsh climate, especially in the winters. The average winter temperatures is about -30°F and average summer temperatures is roughly 37-54°F. The yearly amount of precipitation, which includes melting snow, averages to about 6 to 10 inches. With these conditions it makes for a short growing season of about 50-60 days. In some parts it can be up to 180 days. This is only found in the more southern part of the tundra. Another aspect of the tundra includes the vegetation that is found there and the adaptations that have been made.
The tundra is known for its’ cold temperatures, but also its’ limited plant species. The growth of the vegetation is primarily low to the ground and the biomass of plants is concentrated in the roots. Here the plants reproduce more likely by division and building than by flower pollination. Some of that growthforms that you will find in the tundra include tussock, mats or cushion plants, rosettes, and dwarf shru...

...enthic, coral reef, and estuaries. Some freshwater habitats include marches, lakes, rivers, ponds, wetlands, and bogs.
All the biomes of the world have climates, plants, and animals all their own. Traveling through each zone you can pick out the similar adaptations of each plant and animal. Biomes are unique to their location, each one of great importance to the world.

Forest Biomes: Complex Ecologic Systems in the World Essay - There are various ways to classify biome, one of the common ways is grouping biomes into five major types: forest, grasslands, desert, aquatic, and tundra. Identifying a location in the world that is hard to live well and explain needs comparisons from multiple facets, for instance, geographic location, climate, and the food source. Forest biomes are the most complex ecologic systems in the world, and they cover 1/3 of the land on earth. There are three major types of forest biomes: tropical forests, temperate forests, and boreal forests....   [tags: savannas, grassland biomes] 585 words

Essay on Tundra: The Coldest and Harshest Biomes of the World - ... One of the major problem is Global Warming. Global warming is the greatest challenge facing our planet. It is one of the widely discussed topics because global warming is a threat to all living things on Earth. The animals and people in the arctic are already experiencing this. The earth’s temperature dramatically increased during the past 50 years and now, ice caps are melting which will lead to sea level rise. Thirty years ago, ice covered half of the Arctic but in 2008, the ice covered less than 30 percent of the area....   [tags: carbon dioxide, global warming] 554 words

The Earth is Divided into Biomes Essay - Introduction The earth is divided climatically and geographically into specific areas where there are similarities in communities of vegetation, organisms and animals. These ecosystems are often referred to as biomes. Differences in biomes usually consists of identifiable plant structures where there is a specific pattern of ecological activity. Biomes are also major types of habitats for different types of organisms and animals. The following paper will explore two different biomes: Boreal Forest and the Tropical Rainforest....   [tags: ecosystems, habitats, environment] 1209 words

The Importance of Biomes Essay - The importance of Biomes Biomes are the living spaces of life. They describe communities located across different regions across the world, looking at the interactions between climatic factors, living organisms, and substrates found in the environment. Generally, a biome refers to a community of similar organisms that are found in a particular climate zone. There are six biomes of earth found in three climate zones. The three climate zones are called tropical, temperate, and polar climate zones; and the six biomes of earth are deserts, grasslands, temperate deciduous forests, rainforests, taiga, and tundras....   [tags: Temperature, Regions, Environment]

Biomes as Units of the Biosphere Essay - Merriam-Webster dictionary defines biosphere as “the part of the world in which life can exist.” There are 2.1 million catalogued species known to exist and some scientist estimate as much as 100 million might exist. Each of these species has adapted to life in a particular part of the biosphere. These particular parts are called ecosystems. Since there is a large jump between the biosphere and ecosystems scientists have divided the biosphere into biomes. In doing research about biomes, it seems that different scientists have different ideas about biomes....   [tags: essays research papers] 1910 words

Tropical Rainforest Biomes Essay - Tropical rainforests have been around for approximately 400 million years (Knight, 2004: para.1), they inhibit about 50% of all the living things on Earth including flora and fauna (RFUS, 2014: para.2). They also produce 40% of the Earth’s oxygen (Schaffner, 2010: para.3), although these rainforests only take up 6-7% of the Earth’s land surface; they are referred as ‘The Lungs of the Earth’ (SYW, 2010: para.2) Location Tropical rainforests are found in the area between the Tropic of Cancer (23.5° N latitude) and the Tropic of Capricorn (23.5° S latitude) (EL 2014: para.1)....   [tags: climate, fauna, oxygen]

Biomes Essay - Tundra is the coldest of all the biomes. Tundra comes from the Finnish word tunturia, meaning treeless plain. It is noted for its frost-molded landscapes, extremely low temperatures, little precipitation, poor nutrients, and short growing seasons. Dead organic material functions as a nutrient pool. The two major nutrients are nitrogen and phosphorus. Nitrogen is created by biological fixation, and phosphorus is created by precipitation. Tundra is separated into two types: arctic tundra and alpine tundra....   [tags: essays research papers] 539 words

The Desert Biome: One of the Most Interesting Biomes on Earth Essays - The desert biome is one of the most interesting biomes on earth. An area of land is considered a desert when it produces less than 10 inches of rainfall throughout the year. There are many different types of deserts in the world, with a very diverse group of plants and animals. It has temperatures that are generally hot during the day, and cold at night. A desert is a region so arid due to little rainfall that it supports only sparse and widely spaced vegetation or no vegetation at all. Essay on Diverse Australian Biomes Adapting - Diverse Australian Biomes Adapting Australia is a land of rather extreme weather conditions and widely diverse climates that force the vegetation living there to adapt in many interesting ways. Australia is the driest continent, and biomes such as grasslands and savannas are prime sources of widespread catastrophic fires. The plants that grow in the vast arid and semi-arid regions of Australia are prone to fires simply because of the desert climates that they grow in. High temperatures combined with low fuel moisture contents, little humidity and drying winds that sweep across the landscape encourage many of the plants living in these areas to burst into flames at fairly frequent intervals...   [tags: Adaptation Australia Essays]
