I am Obligated to Use my Talents to Benefit Society As a potential medical student, I will strive to be a tremendous asset to The Chicago Medical School by devoting all my time and life to becoming an excellent physician. I believe that I am obligated to use my talents in a constructive manner, in a manner that benefits society. The medical career gives me the unique opportunity to express my many talents while benefiting human life. B. Berston M.D. once said: " ... a funny thing happens to medical students on their way to becoming physicians: they forget how to hold a conversation." I believe that my ability to communicate makes me well suited to pursue a medical career. While I possess the strong science background necessary for success in the profession, I also consider myself a " people" person. As a waiter and bartender, I dramatically improved and expanded my communication skills since I was constantly meeting new people and discussing different topics. Because people constantly disclosed thei... ... middle of paper ... ... of medicine as a career because I am convinced that medicine offers me the opportunity to live a fulfilling, rewarding life dedicated to helping others. I will enter medicine eager to learn and thirsting for the knowledge to help my fellow human beings. Attending The Chicago Medical School would be one of the greatest rewards for my motivation and persistence for success. I swear to uphold and exceed all that is expected of a future physician while promoting the progress of medicine and humanity.
In Elie Wiesel’s Night, he recounts his horrifying experiences as a Jewish boy under Nazi control. His words are strong and his message clear. Wiesel uses themes such as hunger and death to vividly display his days during World War II. Wiesel’s main purpose is to describe to the reader the horrifying scenes and feelings he suffered through as a repressed Jew. His tone and diction are powerful for this subject and envelope the reader. Young readers today find the actions of Nazis almost unimaginable. This book more than sufficiently portrays the era in the words of a victim himself.
Since the publication of, Night by Eliezer Wiesel, the holocaust has been deemed one of the darkest times in humanity, from the eradication of Jewish people to killing of innocents. Wiesel was one of the Jewish people to be in the holocaust and from his experience he gave us a memoir that manages to capture the dark side of human nature in the holocaust. He demonstrates the dark side of human nature through the cruelty the guards treat the Jews and how the Jews became cold hearted to each other. Wiesel uses foreshadowing and imagery, and metaphors to describe these events.
Many themes exist in Night, Elie Wiesel’s nightmarish story of his Holocaust experience. From normal life in a small town to physical abuse in concentration camps, Night chronicles the journey of Wiesel’s teenage years. Neither Wiesel nor any of the Jews in Sighet could have imagined the horrors that would befall them as their lived changed under the Nazi regime. The Jews all lived peaceful, civilized lives before German occupation. Eliezer Wiesel was concerned with mysticism and his father was “more involved with the welfare of others than with that of his own kin” (4). This would change in the coming weeks, as Jews are segregated, sent to camps, and both physically and emotionally abused. These changes and abuse would dehumanize men and cause them to revert to basic instincts. Wiesel and his peers devolve from civilized human beings to savage animals during the course of Night.
The play “The Crucible” by Arthur Miller was written in response to McCarthyism in the 1950’s. In 1692 and 1693 the Salem witch trials took place in Salem Massachusetts. Girls believed to be involved in witchcraft were responsible for these trials. In the late 1940’s and early 1950’s senator McCarthy came to office. Senator McCarthy and some of his allies were responsible for hysteria in the United States of America in the 1950’s. The scare was also in result of a communist scare after World War II and leading to the cold war. The behavior of the people of the Salem witch trials and Americans in the 19050’s resulted in a big scare in reaction to hysteria.
The Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism are very similar in what they talk about during each period of time. The definition of McCarthyism is “a voracious campaign against alleged communists in the United States government. The first paragraph of McCarthyism states McCarthy spent five years trying in vain to expose communists. His words were so intimidating that only few people dared to speak against him. McCarthy insinuates disloyalty which is what convinced many Americans to believe that their government was packed with traitors and spies. When McCarthy won his election, he did so by criticizing his c
The Crucible was written in 1953 by Arthur Miller. Miller was portraying, through the reenactment of the Salem witch trials, an anti-communist movement we can refer to as McCarthyism. The play is therefore an allegory of McCarthyism. It illustrates the impact of the hysteria witchcraft has aroused in the town of Salem, thus demonstrating the effect of the Red scare on the American society. Miller denounced the actions of McCarthy’s House of Un-American Activities Committee through the character Abigail, whose lying and deceiving abilities lead to the death of numerous honest Salem citizens. However, Arthur miller’s message would not still hold the same relevance if the play was written in a different time. The aim of the play would have been completely obsolete since it was written for a specific time period. McCarthyism lasted...
During Author Miller’s era of the 1950’s, the ‘cold war’ was happening. Senetor Joeseph McCarthy was completely against communism and began to arrest the communists and people assosiating with them. Those arrested were forced to either name names to identify those who were communists or thought to be, or else they would remain in jail. This was callef McCarthyism For many, being prisioned was a terrible frightening thought so they would name names including any that they could think of that could be innocent. Author Miller was arrested for associating with communists and refused to identify others, and wrote The Crucible, using it as an allegory to identify the problems of society and it’s flaws of the corrupt government.
Book: Elie Wiesel narrates the novel Night, a story about how he, moving from concentration camps in Poland to Germany, conquers the physical and mental hardships of the Holocaust as a teenage boy. Wiesel, a Holocaust survivor, recreates his thoughts and experiences. The author wants readers to know and have a deeper understanding of the life of a teenage Jew during the Holocaust. Elie, the teenage main character, helps young readers to have a stronger relationship and connection with the story. Survival during religious persecution exists as the theme of this novel; Elie still believes in his God but does not understand why God allows a multitude of Jewish people die. Elie says to himself, “And in spite of myself, a
The Red Scare was a time when people were so afraid of communists. Some even suspected friends and neighbors of being communists. This fear is mostly Senator John McCarthy’s fault. McCarthy started this fear by stating, “I have in my hand the names of 205 cases of individuals who appear to be either card carrying member or certainly loyal to the communist party,” (Shmoop). McCarthy was falsely accusing a lot of innocent people of being communists, because of this there was a word named after him: McCarthyism. “The term McCarthyism refers to an accusatory campaign based on unfair allegations, fear tactics, innuendo, and sensationalized threats of guilt by association,” (McCarthyism). Arthur Miller’s The Crucible took place in Salem, Massachusetts in 1692 (Summary). It was a time when people were paranoid that there was evil in the village. People accused others of witchcraft because of old grudges, they wanted their land, or they were jealous. The accusations started when a group of girls got into trouble for dancing in the woods (Miller). A few of the main characters are Abigail, John Proctor, and Mary Warren (Summary). Abigail is accused of witchcraft, she starts the accusations by blaming Tituba (Miller). Abigail...
I am excited to be submitting my application to Georgetown University School of Medicine, as this school’s mission and values reflect my own beliefs on the role of a physician. I believe that there is no fixed template to healthcare; medicine and health will vary across time, regions, and individuals, and as future physicians, it is crucial for us to recognize that. While standard science education is certainly critical, a broadened approach that draws on other knowledge and our own life experiences is just as essential to delivering quality healthcare. I believe that Georgetown Medical School’s tradition of “Cura Personalis” and its
Communication involves the exchange of information between two or more people. Whether verbal or nonverbal, communication serves as the bridge that allows people to share ideas and thoughts. Clinical professionals converse with patients, relatives, and other professionals daily. Conversely, despite having multiple encounters with patients every day, physicians fail to enact the necessary communication and interpersonal skills to effectively listen, instill confidence, and promote following medical advice in patients.
Although I am not entirely sure what field of medicine I would like to go into, I know that medicine is the right path for me because I really cannot picture myself doing anything else. I truly believe I am ready to face the innumerable obstacles, struggles, successes, and failures in my path to becoming a doctor because the day I am able medically treat and help others in any way possible will be a dream come true. Thus, being admitted into medical school will get me one step closer to obtaining my aspirations.
Jerry made a conscious choice of wanting to end his life, while Peter, a man that chose to act as the 'guinea pig'; and stayed and listened to Jerry's story, made a conscious choice of picking up same knife that killed Jerry. Although it was Peter who held the knife that killed Jerry, it was Jerry who took the responsibility to - despite great effort and pain – 'wipe the knife handle clean of fingerprints'; to allow no trace of the murderer. However, although Peter escaped without responsibility, he had to deal with the guilt that it was him who held the weapon that ended the life of Jerry. Peter had to face the rest of his life being aware of how others lived, and how one can feel so indifferent to the world yet live in the very same part of the city.
It is common knowledge that Author Miller wrote The Crucible as a reaction to a tragic time in our countries history. The McCarthy hearings, as they came to be known, which dominated our country from 1950 to 1954, where hearings in which many, suspected of being related to communism, where interviewed and forced to give up names of others, or they where imprisoned, and their names were black listed. There are several parallels between the McCarthy Era, and the time of the Salem which trials. One similarity one will see is what I call the scare factor. Another parallel between the two groups is the "everybody is doing it" mentality. One also sees a parallel in the lives that were ruined in both eras because of the accusations and punishments.
Arthur Miller wrote his play, The Crucible, a story about the Salem witch trials, and the panic resulting from it, as an allegory to show people the insanity of the McCarthy hearings. He wrote it as an allegory so that, if tried by McCarthy, he could say, "it's just a play about the witch trials in Salem. How do you get this communist idea from it?" The story illustrates how people react to mass hysteria, created by a person or group of people desiring fame, as people did during the McCarthy hearings.
