Eighty-Six Years of Change in St.Michael's Ward, Sunderland For this assignment I am going to cover 86 years of change in this locality (St. Michaels Ward, Sunderland), 1855, 1897 and 1941. Maps show a number of industries, businesses and homes have remained the same. Maps A and B show the most change, from a rural area to an urbanised area, from maps B to C there's even more urbanisation. In 1855, farming was the main industry, using most of the land. Farming was the main industry because st Michael's ward was a rural area and it had enclosed fields. We can also see on the map that there was a windmill (which was used with farming), the Bishopwearmouth steam mill which shows they adopted new technology and the Clarke tannery which would have been used to process animal skins and produce leather items. There is evidence of coal mining in the area (the coal depot and Hetton company's railway). The Hetton Company's railway opened in 1822 by engineer, George Stephenson. There is also evidence of a growing building industry as the stone yard was used for quarrying and the clay pit would probably be used to make stone bricks. There is also a timber yard. There are already some houses in the area; for example, Mary Street and Houghton Street were homes for the working class. People who lived in these houses could work in farming, building, coal, shipbuilding or glassworks. There were two main roads that crossed the rural area. One of which was called Durham Road. The Hetton Company's railway carried coal from Hetton Company's field to the saithes on the River Wear to be loaded onto the colliers. The coal would then be carried over... ... middle of paper ... ... herself. In subsequent years to follow, the sisters of mercy bought surrounding detached houses. Somerleyton was bought in 1926 from Fred Taylor, Westburn was bought in 1938 from George Short, and Holm Lea was bought in 1940 from the Vaux sisters. Today, Sunderland has city status. This area has undergone a massive amount of change. Famous shipyards and monkwearmouth coalpit have closed. Mayfair toffee factory on the map has also closed down. Other industries have replaced these. E.g. Nissan car factory and many jobs provided in extension to Sunderland's shopping centre. Sunderland university has also extended, with many new buildings on the riverside. The area on the map has many large terraced houses turned into student accommodation. Much of the area on the map in 1941 is still recognisable despite modernisation.
Come with me as I take you inside one of the most unsung haunted locations in the United States today. It is a journey down dark hallways and into rooms painted by both shadow and light where spirits talk and phantoms walk.
On the morning of April 20, they reached the San Jacinto plain. Buffalo Bayou was on one side, a football field wide, and 30 feet deep—not wadeable. On the other side ran the San Jacinto River, and near the bottom of the dry land was a shallow mudhole known as Peggy's Lake. Beyond that was marshlands. And the thick forest was greatly positioned. [see battlefield] They made their camp here in the trees, with their wagons and Colonel Neill's artillery in the forest as well(Hoyt 149).

Orlanda Ward is someone who has had a positive impact on my life. One reason Orlanda has a positive influence on my life is that Orlanda is my god-mom. Orlanda is like my counselor every time I have a problem I can go to her and talk about it. Orlanda might not be the best but she is kind, generous, patient, and also a good friend. Orlanda believed in me when I didn’t believe in myself.

This is a comparison and contrast of two different views of the character, Gloucester in the play King Lear. It will show the different ways that Gloucester has his eyes ripped out. It will also show the different ways the lighting is used and what kind of scenery. It will also show the difference in the ages of the character. Let’s not leave out the wardrobe and the difference between both productions. It will show how Gloucester ages and has similar problems as that of the King.

Ever since the African American race was brought over to the United States they have been mistreated. Upon their arrival, Americans instantly enslaved them and used them for work, not even considering them as people. With the ratification of the Thirteenth Amendment to the United States Constitution in 1865, slavery was finally outlawed; however, “colored” people were still treated unequally through segregation. Segregation was legalized by the Court decision in the case Plessy v. Ferguson. But, in 1952, the case Brown v. Board of Education upturned the Plessy v. Ferguson precedent saying that the “separate but equal doctrine was unconstitutional. The result was a nation wide integration. Everything from schools to businesses to restaurants and bathrooms became integrated. Unfortunately, not all states took to this integration kindly. Many did everything they could to resist African Americans from mixing with whites. The southern most states were particularly vicious about this segregation going to the extent of bombings to quell the hopes of African Americans. But one city was determined to fight segregation. Birmingham, Alabama was the site of one of the most prominent parts of the civil rights movement and despite a decade since Brown v. Board of Education, Birmingham refused to integrate. The Birmingham campaign was one of the most influential movements of the civil rights movement and was the turning point in the war against segregation. The violence and cruelty inflicted upon African Americans not only united the people of the city, but it also united the people of the nation.
None of the buildings on the street that I live on here in California have very big lawns, which contrasts dramatically with my old neighborhood because back in Connecticut most houses have almost an acre of land per house. There are multiple trees on my moms property and the backyard is basically up against a forest. Now there 's still a good amount of trees on the street I currently live on in here California, but much less and most of them are much smaller or are palm trees. The houses and apartment complexes
This century has been one of many changes and incredible inventions. If a person was to think about it, this century has taken us from horseback to fuel-injected horsepower, from gaslights to sodium-vapor streetlights, from crystal radios to digital television, from compasses to GPS navigation systems, from wood burning stoves to microwave ovens, from Victrolas to DVD players and of course from hot air balloons to jet propulsion aircraft.
