Students spend four years of their lives attending high school. Going through high school is mandatory as it prepares them for college and strength to face “the real world.” Having part-time jobs has become the phenomenon among high school students and many students follow this trend as well. Moreover, there are some pros and cons attached with it. Though it may seem like working throughout high school is a bad idea, it could better prepare students for “the real world.” Although some people believe that the primary duty of a student is studying, I am of the opposite position. I strongly support the idea that high school students should work throughout high school. This is because they can earn money, become responsible and get experience.
One of the advantage is that students can earn money. Some high school students have to earn money on their own to pay their future college’s tuition fees while some students just earn money to pay for their expenditure or satisfy their desires. High school students don’t have to be dependent on their parents for money. Money can make t...
Etzioni emphasizes on three negative effects of teenagers part-time employment on education. He highlights that fast food jobs impede with education, do not convey new skills, and alter youngsters’ moral values and work principles. Further, the writer continues in following paragraphs giving appropriate ideas to support each of his claims. Etzioni depicts the American convention with respect to teenagers’ employment. The essay utters that youngsters’ employment was a conventional way of teaching “self-reliant, work-ethic-driven, productive” in young people. He then goes on providing a synopsis of the variation from the standard in the current situation. Etzioni also accentuates on the positive effects of teen jobs in terms of raising money for college for poor
The critical challenge within in today’s society is that college tuition should be free or if not free, more affordable for all students. Certainly, higher education should not be considered a luxury where only the wealthy could afford, but an opportunity for all caste systems. It must be an accessible and affordable opportunity for all students in order for them to invest in their education. Higher education is important because it provides more careers to choose from than the careers offered without having a college degree. Ultimately, the issue here is whether it is right to make college tuition more affordable for the students.
In the article “Working Through College Pays Off”, the author Randy Raterman show his idea about agreeing students working through college by using particular details. He supports that working through college can stimulate students undertake education more seriously, teaching them responsibility and supports their parents financial burden. First, the author thinks working students take hard works to exceed at school and quit tiresome jobs. It motivates them to study harder. Secondly, students understand the payment for college, which takes responsibility from taking job. In addition, the pressure of deficient funds for education can cause problems between the parents. Working students can relieve the financial difficulties form their family and also help their parents saving money. In my opinion, I
Although a college education grows more and more expensive every year. People begin to question whether college is a good idea to invest in or not. “As college costs continue to rise, students and their families are looking more carefully at what they are getting for their money. Increasingly, they are finding that the college experience falls short of their expectations”(Cooper. H Mary). Many people believe that the cost of a college degree has outstripped the value of a degree.Studies show that a college degree will increase your earning power. A lot of people say that a college degree now is worth what a high school diploma was wor...
Today high school student is getting the job experience by working at McDonald’s or other fast food restaurants. Working a McDonald’s is not an easy job because the shift hours are not stable and income is not very high. High scholars are thinking that working at a fast restaurant is going to gain an income easily, especially for those in a middle class family that needs a part time job to support their self. It might be a bit of a struggle for the high student to learn to manage their time schedule between school and work. In the essay, “Working at McDonald’s,” Amitai Etzioni believes that high school students working at McDonald’s can destroy their future. He explains very clear through his point of view that if high school students choose to work at McDonald’s or any fast-food places, it would be a waste of time because they only take advantage of them. Etzioni think that these high school students are set for low paid job because if they don’t continue with their education path then they are stuck or don’t have any other opportunity. On the other hand, I agree and understand his point. High school students are falling behind in school, but I don’t see that working at McDonald’s is what causes them to end their future.
students in his research. Which is followed by Mounsey,Vandehey, and Diekhoff (2013), when they found that there is no major differentiation between working and non-working students, in grade point average(Mounsey,Vandehey, and Diekhoff 2013, pg. 12). Granted with 74.5% of students working while attending school (pg. 3). Which nearly half,48.9%, of these students found it hard to meet deadlines(Schwarts, McGuire, & Satterstrom ,2011, pg. 4). That seems to be around a consensus as the American Council on Education. (2006) found that 78% of students work (pg. 6). While stating, of that 83.5% where working part time, 25 hours or less(pg. 6). As I was preparing to leave the army one of my major concerns was if working would automatically put me at a disadvantage in school. All the reading on this topic shows that even in the early 2000's, well over half of all students have some type of job. Furthering this, since the early 2000's is Orszag, J, Orstag, & Whitmore(2001) stating that, 16 to 24 year old's have shown a rise in working by 8% going from 49% to 57% (para. 1). Students then on average worked 25 hours a week, with students at a 4 year college working less hours on average(para. 2). In the research, it was found that students who worked 10 or fewer hours a week, tended to have higher GPA's than their peers (para. 5). Which that is be the idea behind the golden 10-15 hours; that is enough to make students prioritize their lives while giving them a vast majority of their time still free. However, Fletcher (2011) found that 20% of students where working full time, 30+ hours a week, and that they were 10% less likely to receive their degrees (para. 2). Even more, she concludes in the same way as previous sources; that worki...
Students should not view a college education just for the money sake. A student should learn to the best of his or her knowledge. In today’s society, there ...
Education is an essential tool required to succeed in today’s modern society. As time has progressed, there has been a higher and higher emphasis placed on tertiary education. In order to achieve a tertiary education, however an individual must have financial support as tertiary education is continuing to become more privatised and expensive than ever. It is therefore due to this lack of financial support many students are finding they must work part-time in order to support their studies. With the rapid growth in the service sector, there has been an abundance of low-wage, monotonous, routinized jobs available for students to pursue. The appeal of
In this article they explain how working can be healthy for teenagers, especially those who know how to balance out their time. If teenagers take the responsibility to time out their schedule and make sure they aren't underworking it can be really beneficial. “Teens who enter adolescence with strong academic interests and goals may work very little during high school, and when they do have jobs, they limit their hours of employment so as to not jeopardize their grades.” These teenagers who work like this also find that the jobs help with the basic skills, for instance “ a wide range of beneficial attributes, such as the capacity to take responsibility, develop time-management skills, overcome shyness with adults, and handle
It can be hard for teens to find a job for the summer. It can be even harder to find a job that one can only work a few weeks here and there throughout the year. According to Tracy Morgan, an additional benefit of working during the summer is “it offers a much wider perspective on life, and mixing with people they might not normally have the opportunity to meet is a great eye-opener to the world around them.”(Morgan 4) Summer jobs help teach important life skills, such as having to deal with issues or problems that take place. These summer jobs can give teens valuable work experience, which looks great on a resume. They can also help teens network, and could provide useful contacts to possible work in the future. Furthermore, going to work regularly offers teens the chance to develop their time-management skills, and with that, comes a sense of responsibility. A summer job is great for the teen’s self-esteem. They can feel empowered and experience a sense of achievement. Working in the summer months also provides greater independence, allowing teens to quietly pull away from the parental-guarded environment, which will help pave the way to adulthood. A summer job could also help the teen learn to manage their money and could help explore potential career pathways for the
While having a job teaches students to be professional and to work hard, it takes away precious time and energy from students’ studies. Additionally, working and attending college can be overwhelming to students and can result in high stress levels, anxiety, and even depression (Dunkel-Schetter, Lobel 17). Despite this, the rising cost of higher education has risen along with the percentage of students that are employed (Riggert 64). In 2000, 77% of students enrolled in four-year colleges also had jobs on the side, working an average of 27 hours per week. Studies have found that longer work hours were correlated with poorer study skills, longer time to graduate, and poorer academic performance (Butler 500). This is because not only does working while in school take away important time from studying, but it takes an immense toll on the mental health of students. The stress of numerous responsibilities and the need to over-achieve in all of them can lead to mental breakdowns and may cause students to perform poorly. Overexertion causes students to feel exhausted, both physically and emotionally, contributing to poor academic performance, and, more importantly, overall health (Polson, Nida 95). Additional studies have found that students who work are more likely to engage in binge drinking (Butler, Dodge, Faurote 291). Although having a job
These unofficial requirements for university become a one reason of increasing stress of the applicants. Students needs to concentrate on going to college during their high school years. Unfortunately, not only students get stress while applying to college, but they also get stress after they enroll into college. Due to expensive tuition bill, some of the students need to take student loan. Cook concludes by arguing that high schools should support their students not only enrolling into college, but also basic skills which can be used after college, and college admission processes are needed to be change.
First College students should not work while going to school because there is no time. In College you already have no time for anything. Adding a job you can say goodbye to a few essential things. Like for instance school you have less time to do things for your classes. Studying is a main thing for school and ...
It is very common that many high school students hold part time jobs while going to school. When these teens work, they are able to learn and experience life lessons from ethical and moral work. Knowing that school is aways and should be a priority, students should work while in high school because working helps students be more responsible with their lives, help them practice time managment, and also helps students see and experience the real world.
Nowadays, more students do part-time job during their school days to earn money or to have practical experience. In this essay, I am going to compare and contrast the different attitudes toward students doing part-time job in China and USA. In China, there are only a few types of part-time job, such as shopkeeper and working in factories. However, in USA, it is possible for students to work in various kinds of shop or even work as intern in companies. As a result, there are
