Through times of tragedy, death, and overall hardships in peoples’ lives, there is always a little ray of hope in a gloomy world, whether it be comedy, music, or any other coping device. Some result to music, videogames, food, or even physical harm. Being whatever it is, favoritism of a subject helps define one’s own character, as well as being a relation to the character itself. This is as true with reality as well as on paper. In plays, the goal is for the audience feel the emotion of what is going on on the stage. When you watch a tragedy, the cast attempts to transport you to a place of actuality of the events; if someone died, they want to make you feel the pain of losing a loved one. When theatre-goers hear the word “melodrama”, visions of mustached villains tying a helpless damsel in distress down to train tracks are conjured up. Thought as cheesy, corny, soap opera-like, these stereotypes give a false representation of what the core of melodrama is. Traditionally, melodrama is written in a two-dimensional world, with a hero who is always “good” and a villain who is always “evil.” Without any ambiguity, it is clear who these main characters are by their actions, attire, presentation and music. The plot of the play is strongly developed with enthralling, intense and often emotional conflicts. Of course, there are several theatrical scenes leading up to the climax of the melodrama where good triumphs evil, evil is punished and a moral lesson is instilled. This, the basis of melodrama, has laid the foundation for identifiable character development and strong, engaging plots in any form of theatre today.

For many years before and since Brecht proposed his theory of “Epic Theatre”, writers, directors and actors have been focused on the vitality of entertaining the audience, and creating characters with which the spectator can empathize. ‘Epic Theatre’ believes that the actor-spectator relationship should be one of distinct separation, and that the spectator should learn from the actor rather than relate to him. The question to be examined is whether either of these two plays are entirely successful in achieving what was later called, ‘The Alienation Effect”.

This technique was mastered by no other than the playwright William Shakespeare. Shakespeare throughout his tragedies focuses on two scenes that stand out to the audiences. Shakespeare was a master of this art in the work he produced throughout his life and was able to create stories of humor and those of tragedy. For example, his play King Lear is a terrible tragedy in which many awful things take place and the story ends by disastrous means. While in the play Much Ado About Nothing, very little conflict is present and if it is, it is resolved quickly and the play concludes with the joyfulness of marriage nuptials. His ability to develop plot and story in a way in which the audience who love to devour, Shakespeare will in a way immortalize himself, “Shakespeare proved himself to be both the "soul of the age" his works reflected and adorned and the consummate symbol of the artist whose poetic visions transcend their local habitation and become, in some mysterious way, contemporaneous with ‘all time.’” (Andrews) As stated, Shakespeare went beyond his time and created traditions, symbols, sayings, and even stories that people today will remember forever. In 1600, William Shakespeare composed what is considered the greatest tragedy of all time, Hamlet, the tragedy of the Prince of Denmark. His masterpiece forever redefined what tragedy should be. Critics have analyzed it word for word for nearly four hundred years, with each generation appreciating Hamlet in its own way. While Hamlet conforms, without a doubt, to Aristotle's definition of a tragedy, one question still lingers. Tom Stoppard's Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, a humorous piece of self-reflexive theater that draws upon Shakespeare's Hamlet as the source of the story. The actual device of self-reflexive theater is used so well in Stoppard's play that it reads like the love child of a play and a compelling critical essay. The play is academic yet conversationally phrased and it deepens our understanding of the original play but also criticizes it. Therefore, this just shows how close the genres of comedy and tragedy really are as they can both lead to similar consequences like those Malvolio faced when he was mocked excessively by Shakespeare throughout all five acts of ‘Twelfth Night’. However, this mockery also shows many social messages as Malvolio was mocked for being a puritan which implies that Elizabethans were against their doings.
