What once was thought of as trendy hipster mentality is slowing seeing some real traction today’s auto market, and is poised to become a viable option in the very near future. The Electric Vehicle (EV) has increased sales every year of the past few years. While the pure EV is still seen as somewhat of an outlier by most auto buyers it is still showing signs of promise. Also, the EV’s more compromising brother, the Hybrid, is seeing advances in sales and technology that will do nothing but bolster the case for purchasing a true plug-in vehicle in the future. Key factors such as infrastructure awareness, power system advancements, and utility companies recognizing their part to play still need to evolve to help this growing market. Power Spikes: The Growing EV Market When talking about the Electric Vehicle Market, it is first necessary to define the term so that there can be some common understanding and continuity. While there are several different types of EV’s the two that this article will focus on are Plug-in EV’s (PEV) and Hybrid Electric Vehicles (HEV). According to US Department of Energy (n.d.) an EV is a vehicle that uses no other fuel source to power the vehicle except stored electrical power that is delivered from an electrical power source. Dan Edmunds (2013) describes a HEV as a vehicle with multiple power sources, often times including a traditional gas engine and fuel tank, along with a secondary electric motor. The duration of this research will focus on PEV’s. Each year more PEV options are rolled out to tempt the American consumer. From small and practical to sporty and exotic most all leading car manufacturers have something to offer.
