Most people have very busy lives, thus not leaving much time for anything else. Many of these people would like to have the time to return to school for different reasons (i.e. earning a higher degree, taking a class on something they enjoy, ect.). What comes to mind when trying to fit schooling into ones very busy schedule is online classes. Taking classes online has become very popular lately. Although popular, these classes have their advantages and disadvantages. I will examine the issues of online based classes to give a better insight as to which one would prefer; online classes or face-to-face classes.
One of the major advantages of an online degree program is the flexibility it provides to someone working a demanding job, living geographically removed from a college campus, or that simply finds it most convenient for a host of other reasons. These challenges of the modern workforce have in fact been the big driver behind the exponential rise in online degree programs over the past decade. Furthermore, the flexibility provided by an online degree program enables tailoring a program matched to personal learning style and pace.
The increased quality and technology of online courses are attracting millions of students to enroll instead of attending traditional schools. More and more students are opting for E-learning convenience despite the complaints of poor quality and high expense. Competition and technological advancement will eventually drive the cost for online education down. Many new educational Internet start-up companies will be providing low cost online courses despite not yet being accredited.
Getting your education is a very important thing to do in your lifetime, and there are many ways to do so. The two most common ways of getting your degree, whether it be a high school diploma or a college degree, are online courses and traditional courses, which is face to face, classroom classes. According to the results of a new national research study (Karambelas 1), 78% of more than 1000 students surveyed still believe that it is easier to learn in a classroom, in other words taking traditional courses. So, when taking online courses rather than traditional courses, you should compare and contrast keeping up with your work, making sure you have a stable place to do your work, and managing your time precisely.
Although traditional classes are offered at day and evening times, still they are a choice for students with more time (Bird). Kendall Bird agrees that for traditional classes, it depends on where the student lives, and the kind of transitions he or she uses to reach for class, because the student has to make a schedule where they will be restricted with a particular time for the class, they will have to add the time they will spend going to class. On the other hand, online education offers to a student the flexibility of time and place. Usually, these kinds of classes are recommended for people with a busy schedule on family and work as Bird mentioned in the article. “10 Advantages to Taking Online Classes” article claims that “online courses give students the opportunity to plan their study time”. With online education, the instructor delivers the content, but students must take greater initiative to access, learn, and understand the material. In addition, students have to actively seek help. Online students may lack the motivation to learn independently. Students, especially those new to higher education, may become easily discouraged when faced with particular academic challenges and drop out. Online education makes it harder to maximize student learning outcomes because the resources that foster learning in face-to-face environments are substantially diminished. In other words, online instruction may not provide sufficient student support. In face-to-face classes, students have their classmates, learning centers on campus, professors ' office hours, tutors, and teaching assistants to support and help them with their various learning needs. These resources guide them, clarify and reinforce the material, and allow them to succeed in their
Education in modern society can be taught in a completely different method than in the past. College students, or even high school students, are given the choice of being enrolled in an online course for certain subjects rather than a traditional class. Many students contemplate over the decision to enroll in an online course because of the differences compared to in-class instruction. When making the decision of which style of learning to enroll in, students need to take in consideration the necessary requirements, amount of access, and the methods of teaching for either an online or traditional style course.

The following article is a study on the effectiveness of online courses and their effectiveness in both teacher-guided assistance and non-guided learning.
