When you hear the word divorce, what do you think of? Separation. Legal documents. Lawyers. A consistent battle between two people who thought they were each other’s soul mates. In the past divorce was never an option. If there was a disagreement between two spouses, they took time to fix the problem instead of saying “You’ve changed. You’re not the person I married” as their “get out of jail free card”. For some people who come from an abusive relationship, divorce is acceptable. According to United States Divorce Statistics forty-one percent of first marriages end in divorce, sixty percent of second marriages end in divorce and seventy three percent of third marriages end in divorce. These numbers are not only shocking, but they are disturbing. Divorce is a very controversial topic in today’s society. One of the most talked topics about divorce is children who come from a broken home will never succeed in anything they do. I hate to be the bearer of bad news, but in some cases there is an exception to the rule.
Since divorce is common thing in the United States, it’s important to look at what mistakes are being made and how to avoid getting a divorce. According to an article called “Top Causes of Divorce” States that the main reason couples get a divorce is lack of communication. It’s not shocking that infidelity plays a big role in divorce. When someone is caught cheating it makes the other person feel hurt and betrayed. They have lost their trust in one another which causes the relationship to crumble. Major changes in priorities can lead to divorce. Some couples marry at a young age so sometimes people might change and act a different way than they are familiar with. Divorce can be caused by problems such as drugs, adultery, abuse, and money. The United States is a fast-paced country with little to no time to spend on the basic family values it was founded upon. Jobs are more demanding, kids are spending most of their time with people other than their parents, and the economy drains marriages by causing worry and stress. The foundation upon which marriage was built has been shaken.
First of all, America has the highest divorce rate among western nations. Divorce rate increased after every major war, and decreased during the Post-World War II economic boom. The divorce rate has more than doubled since 1940, when there were two divorces for every 1,000 persons. Now for the same number of people, there are over five divorces. Studies indicate that there is more divorce among persons with low incomes and limited education and those who marry at a very young age. Teenage marriages are much more likely to end in divorce than are all other marriages. And women who marry when they are over age 30 are the least likely to become divorced. Most people, when thinking about divorce, worry about the impact that it has on the children that are involved. Even though children are most likely better off if totally incompatible parents separate instead of staying together, divorce is about loss and change, and it is still hard for children. Everyone knows that divorce has its effects on children. There are three different sources that try to explain these effects. Graham Blaine Jr. states that divorce is a threat to all children, whereas Rhona Mahony states that divorce is not always the cause of behavioral or academic problems in children coming from divorced families. Yvette Walczak and Sheila Burns state that the extent of the damage can be determined by the parents and their methods of explanation to the children.

The argument over how divorce affects children is one that has been going on for a very long time. Some people believe when parents get a divorce the children are not affected at all, while others believe when parents get a divorce the children are affected by the impact of divorce more than anyone in the family. In some cases, married couples can be in such a terrible marriage that divorce can in no way be avoided, and these divorces are usually the ones that children benefit from and are affected in a positive way. Many times though, a couple will choose to get a divorce because their marriage is not exactly the way it used to be, and they want that aspect of life back; these are the divorces that negatively affect children. Even though in some cases divorce does not affect children negatively, many times when parents obtain a divorce, the children are negatively harmed in many different ways that will forever change their lives.

Some parents who are going through a divorce wonder what the effects of their decision to dissolve the marriage will be on the children. Parents worry that their divorce will cause their children emotional problems that will last a lifetime. These worries are not unsubstantiated. Marriage is no longer taken seriously; commitment and monogamy are no longer an essential ingredient. For most couples today, it’s not even considered a part of marriage. The negative effects that divorce has on children should be the number one consideration when a couple hits that hard time in their relationship. Children are psychologically and socially affected by divorce and may need counseling either at the time of their parent’s divorce or in the future. They may react instantly by getting lower grades or becoming depressed or anxious.
Another cause of divorce is due to financial difficulties. Budget handling and debt arising out of low or reduced income is an example of a financial cause of divorce. Fighting over how to budget becomes a major problem in the marriage. In most cases, one of the partners is not content with the overspending habits of the other individual. This will cause a stressful situation which leads to an unwholesome relationship and result in a divorce. A couple struggling to make ends meet has the potential to cause conflict within the marriage. How the economy is today, it seems we are fighting more and more to keep our jobs.
