Standardized tests are very common throughout the United States. They are used to measure students’ academic performances in school. These tests vary from state to state in all grade levels. However, these tests are believed to be biased towards those students who come from higher-class neighborhoods, simply because they have more educational resources. “The absence of standards virtually guarantees stratified resources and access to knowledge, based upon income, color of skin, and the community and neighborhood in which one lives” (French, 2003). The resources in the suburban areas differ from those in the urban areas, because of the gap within the difference of incomes. Families living in suburban neighborhoods have a bigger income, which enables them to have more resources than those living in urban neighborhoods. Most educational resources come from taxes, which plays a big part in the gap between urban and suburban neighborhoods.
Getting into college and graduating out without heaps of debt is a big deal for high school students. The barrier between a high school student and college is the ACT or the SAT. Colleges and Universities all over the world require you to have a certain score before being accepted. Universities also use those scores to determine how much someone pays for the education they get. Colleges and universities put too much focus on standardized test scores instead of the person who obtained them.
Teachers spend time on the memorization of specific words that will be on the state test, not vocabulary building exercises. What I plan to research for my project is why exactly do we always have to take standardized tests in school for elementary students. The reason I want to research this is because the state always gives some standard test for all students to take . I don’t understand why we have to give these tests to elementary students.
