People have conveyed messages through pieces of art, writing, music, media, and other means of communication. In writing, poems are a powerful vehicle for expressing ideas and theories. Poets use literary devices to support their message and communicate their emotions toward a specific topic to the reader. Using poetic elements appropriately enables the poet to be more successful in reaching the audience and changing their perspective. Shu Ting, a Chinese poet, uses her poem, “Assembly Line”, to explain her hardships as a factory worker during the Cultural Revolution in China. In “Assembly Line”, Shu Ting utilizes various literary devices to prove that conformity eliminates variety in life.

Comparing Ben Bertram’s [Response] and Kogawa’s Road Building by Pick Axe is an interesting exercise. There are two primary points of comparison : First, why did each author choose to use the form of poetry that they did, haiku for Bertram and blank verse for Kogawa; Secondly, what using that form of poetry accomplished for their poem. The reason that these poems should be read together is because Bertram raises several important questions about Kogawa’s writing that will help you to better understand Kogawa’s message.
Authors use many different types of imagery in order to better portray their point of view to a reader. This imagery can depict many different things and often enhances the reader’s ability to picture what is occurring in a literary work, and therefore is more able to connect to the writing. An example of imagery used to enhance the quality of a story can be found in Leyvik Yehoash’s poem “Lynching.” In this poem, the imagery that repeatably appears is related to the body of the person who was lynched, and the various ways to describe different parts of his person. The repetition of these description serves as a textual echo, and the variation in description over the course of the poem helps to portray the events that occurred and their importance from the author to the reader. Imagery uses five senses such as visual, sound, olfactory, taste and tactile to create a sense of picture in the readers’ mind. In this poem, the speaker uses visual imagination when he wrote, “I took my time in old darkness,” making the reader visualize the past memory of the speaker in “old darkness.” The speaker tries to show the time period he chose to write the poem. Poetry is a very subjective art it is up to the authors to determine how they want to convey their message to the readers. Both Ezra Pound’s poem “In the Station Metro” and Emma LaRocque’s poem “The Red in Winter” use imagery, that is very subjective to interpretation, to convey their message in an economic manner. Pound’s artistic imagist poem shows that art isn’t just visual but it can also be portrayed through words alone; and that imagery is a powerful aspect of poetry. LaRaque’s however is focused on how images can portray political issues among differing cultures.
1) The theme that I will explore for the two independent pieces, will involve the theme of simply finding who you really are. As a viewer we should see past the complications of the obstacles we face in our day-to-day lives, for our eyes should only then become fixated on the endless possibilities of the time we have left within the intersection of time and space. The viewer can than grasp each of the moments that are left, so they can imagine beyond the emptiness - alone to see a sense of self-discovery in the very center, only pondering on the isolated sense of power we hold as humans to create a new life of belonging. Quite often, tHere are two sides to every story. Similarly, there are often several different viewpoints on any given topic. The idea of the importance of poetry is such a topic. While some may find poetry pointless and hard to follow, others stand behind such writing wholeheartedly. Naomi Shihab Nye stated, “Anyone who feels poetry is an alien or an ominous force should consider the style in which human beings think. ‘How do you think?’ I ask my students. ‘Do you think in complete, elaborate sentences?... Or in flashes and bursts of images, snatches of lines leaping one to the next?’ We think in poetry. But some people pretend poetry is far away.” Nye is correct when she compares the way humans think of the way poetry is written. It is clear that Naomi Shihab Nye is correct in her statement through the study of poems such as Streets by Naomi Shihab Nye, Halley’s Comet by Stanley Kunitz, and Who Burns for the Perfection of Paper by Martín Espada.
How do poetic devices affect a song? In the song "It's Beginning to Look a lot Like Christmas" there are many poetic devices that can be found throughout it. Poetic devices describe how in this case a song is formed. The three poetic devices that are included in this song are imagery, rhymes, and repetition. In the poem, "The Race" by Sharon Olds, the author uses imagery and personification to convey to the audience the difficulty of the main character's situation. Having a negative slope, her main problem gets worse and worse. Using literary devices such as imagery and personification also gives the audience a chaotic image. Beginning with the practices, whether religious or nonreligious, in China, Li Bo demonstrated the spiritual nature found on earth and the world outside of worlds. Li Bo’s lyrical style reflected folk songs through the use of everyday, bold language. These lyrics were intended to let the public hear the voices and the struggles everyday people in his community faced. This was especially important during the time of imperial China where there were periods of unrest and rebellion amongst its people. However, despite invasions and disputes, it was also deemed fairly stable with an emphasis on artistry. Due to times of stress and tranquility, his lyrics emphasized greatness in spiritual values. In her poem entitled “The Poet with His Face in His Hands,” Mary Oliver utilizes the voice of her work’s speaker to dismiss and belittle those poets who focus on their own misery in their writings. All of the poems focus on change, whether it be physical or cultural. Moreover, the authors reflect what was going on in their world using literature. By reading the poems, we are able to understand what the author was feeling and we are also able to understand the pressure that was pushed upon them by society. Personification is an important theme throughout this poem. In lines 1-2 it says, “The mountain held the town as in a shadow I saw so much before I slept there once:.” Also in lines 3-4 it says, “I noticed that I missed stars in the west, where its black body cut into the sky.” This is an example of personification.
