Development and clarification of mission and values: Bryson (2011) asserts that there are six components that every well written mission statement should have. The mission statement should explain the organization’s identity. The mission statement should also include the basic needs or problems that need to be addressed. The interaction between the organization and its stakeholders should be addressed in the mission statement. The philosophy, values and culture of the organization should also be stated in the mission statement. The final component of a well-written mission statement would be a statement of the uniqueness of the organization. The Hampton City Schools mission statement: “In collaboration with our community, Hampton City Schools ensures academic excellence for every child, every day, whatever it takes”. The mission statement is easily understood by all of its personnel and is aligned with the current HCS strategic plan. However, the current mission statement falls short of accomplishing Bryson’s guidelines of a well written mission statement. The HCS mission statement should be rewritten to comply with Bryson’s guidelines. By its name it is implied that Hampton City Schools is an organization of schools. The values and philosophy of HCS are incorporated in the statement “academic excellence for every child, every day, whatever it takes”. The core values of HCS is listed in the strategic plan as well as the district website. Integrity, responsibility, innovation, excellence, and professionalism are listed as the core values of the HCS. An article discussing the importance of a mission statement states that a mission statements’ job is to outline the organization’s unique purpose and establish the basis of its values and traits, as well as describe the attitude that is to be expected of those a part of the organization. Furthermore, this philosophical foundation sets the “tone” for physical actions, meaning that the content of the mission statement can determine the behavior of personnel (Hitt & Ireland, 1992).
A mission statement express the core purpose of an organization and its reason for existence. Mission statements are vital to an organization because they communicate and set the foundation of the purpose of their existence. They shape the attitudes and behaviors of the members of the organization and the perceptions of the public (Hess, 67).
A mission statement is important because it creates the general big picture of the company and every employee can relate to it no matter what their job within the company is. With a list of values and norms the Ivanovics create a level of expectation when it comes to attitude and behavior. If the owners follow the same values and norms as the employees, the employees will feel like they are a meaningful part of the business. This will allow the employees to feel more committed to their jobs.
A mission statement should define the organization, why they exist, who they are serving, and what products and services they offer (Aguinis, 2013). Aguinis (2013) includes eight components for a good mission statement. These components are products or services offered, customers being served, benefits to their products or services, technology being used, growth and profitability, managerial philosophy, public image, and self-concept of business by the employees and stockholders (Aguisis, 2013).
Dan Heath explains how to create a successful mission statement. He states that nowadays people prefer simplicity. For example, it is useful to replace some pompous or rude words with the simpler ones like present, instead of serve, or the word “damn”, that should be undoubtedly censored. Likewise, the mission statement should not be too limited, for instance, Italian food, instead of pizza should be offered to customers (FastCompany, 2010). More to the point, the food parlor might offer family entertainment that is associated with the integrity. In other words, it is essential to make words sound more concrete and precise, answer the question of why it is necessary to use that particular product (Hitt, Ireland, & Hoskisson, 2015). It is of paramount importance for the mission statement to reflect the fact that the company cares for its customers.
Everybody that is in business is there to make a profit (some firms are just tax shelters) and there are only so many products and services available. What sets the competition apart is how they execute their business practices. This is where a mission statement becomes the “blueprint” for doing business. “The mission statement needs to be longer than a phrase or sentence, but not a 2-page document” (David, 2003). This document not only points the managers in the right direction, it also gives the employee a sense of why they are working for this company. In addition, the mission statement not only gives purpose and direction, it should also give motivation and pride not only to the employees of the company but also their customers. The bottom line in any business is to make a profit and in order to do this; the business must find a way for their customers to spend money in their firm. Whole Foods Market ® incorporates many of the guide lines discussed in the readings; however, their mission statement exceeds the two page recommended length.
It is the reason why the organization exists. It is the duty of the board to ensure that the organization has a modern statement of what it is, represents, and does. The board also should periodically review the statement’s adequacy, accuracy, and viability. A mission focuses the organization and gives individuals the cause they are seeking.

The compiling of mission and value statements are of vital importance to any agency or entity. Although some individuals may view them as verbiage to appease the public, these statements of goals and values are of great importance. In fact, if appropriately instituted, written values and mission statements provide a unified purpose for the whole department (Hader, 2006). Likewise, everyone in an agency or entity understands the values of the institution, and the overall objectives then it fosters an environment of personal interest in achieving said objectives. Nevertheless, when an agency provides value and mission statements, it expresses the type of enforcement the administration will attempt to enact.
Firstly, a mission statement is a goal someone wants to accomplish in their life. At Rosemont College their mission statement provides a community with life time dedicated learners and enjoys the pursuit of knowledge. Also Rosemont College wants a open community filled with critical minds, the ability to make moral decisions, and a sense of responsibility. Furthermore, another Rosemont College task is welcoming all faiths and conducts trust in and reverence for the dignity of each person. Rosemont wishes upon a international community and a care for the earth. On the other hand, my mission statement is learning new things everyday in my classes and out, so I can use them in my everyday life. Another is striving to be the best I can be, so I can succeed in life. I want to be more involved in society, so I can know about politics and what
Mission statements are meant to inspire and convey direction that the organization intends to stay on.”Through a mission statement, policies and procedures, a proper management style, and direction, criminal justice administrators attempt to ensure that the organization maintains its overall goals of crime treatment and suppression, and that it works amicably with other organizations and people” (Peak, p. 25). Mission statements are a written declaration that reflects the core purpose behind who the organization is and what they stand for. It encompasses the important elements and keeps people within the organization on the same page, defining what is important, the goals, and excludes the unimportant.
For my community involvement project, I volunteered at Memminger Elementary School for a program called “Reading Partners.” The program focuses on helping children build strong literacy skills to carry with them into their academic careers. It requires the tutor to read to the student that has been assigned and in turn the student reads to the tutor. The program assists in teaching the students valuable reading skills. Being able to read is critical to a child’s educational success. The program works with more than 100 schools within seven states. The program is geared toward students of low-income families. The statistics for children’s literacy in the United States are astonishing. “In 2011, just thirty-four percent of the nation’s fourth graders in public school could read proficiently” (National Center for Education Statistics, 2011). The program itself has had exponential success. Principals and teacher have reported that “Reading Partners” has helped increase students’ reading levels. During my time at the program I accumulated twelve volunteer hours.
These theories, methods, assessments along with the evidence of success in reading at home make it clear that it is extremely important we try our hardest to support literacy in every child. All students can learn. It’s just a matter of making materials interesting and relevant to them, challenging them (but not to hard), and supporting them along the way.
Research suggests that high-performing schools begin with a shared philosophy about learning and teaching that unifies stakeholders and guides instructional decisions. Literacy program reforms will only succeed when members of a school’s community take collective responsibility for student success. Teachers, administrators, parents and even community members should be empowered to take active roles in the reform process. Schools need to move beyond policy talk and create their visions based on effective classroom practices and collectively organize to accomplish the goal of literacy achievement.
