Development and clarification of mission and values: Bryson (2011) asserts that there are six components that every well written mission statement should have. The mission statement should explain the organization’s identity. The mission statement should also include the basic needs or problems that need to be addressed. The interaction between the organization and its stakeholders should be addressed in the mission statement. The philosophy, values and culture of the organization should also be stated in the mission statement. The final component of a well-written mission statement would be a statement of the uniqueness of the organization. The Hampton City Schools mission statement: “In collaboration with our community, Hampton City Schools ensures academic excellence for every child, every day, whatever it takes”. The mission statement is easily understood by all of its personnel and is aligned with the current HCS strategic plan. However, the current mission statement falls short of accomplishing Bryson’s guidelines of a well written mission statement. The HCS mission statement should be rewritten to comply with Bryson’s guidelines. By its name it is implied that Hampton City Schools is an organization of schools. The values and philosophy of HCS are incorporated in the statement “academic excellence for every child, every day, whatever it takes”. The core values of HCS is listed in the strategic plan as well as the district website. Integrity, responsibility, innovation, excellence, and professionalism are listed as the core values of the HCS. The role and interactions between the organization and its stakeholders are addressed in the wording “in collaboration with our community”.
