According to the code of conduct at Clarion University plagiarism is “the use of another's words without attribution and without enclosing the words in quotation marks. Plagiarism may also be defined as the act of taking the ideas or expressions of ideas of another person and representing them as one's own--even if the original paper has been paraphrased or otherwise modified.” (“Department of Nursing” ) A lot of people, including myself have been confused of what plagiarism really means. Through my research I found that there are many different kinds of plagiarism and that a lot of people do it without even being aware they are. I have made the mistake of thinking that you could use another persons quote as long as it was cited, however, this is wrong because it is plagiarizing and this is a very serious issue to deal with. I personally thought using citations was okay because I did not understand the difference between the two, however this is considered a theft. (“What is Plagiarism” ) According to Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary plagiarizes meaning is “to steal and pass off (the ideas or words of another) as one's own.” (“What is Plagiarism” ) Throughout my research, I have discovered five main types of plagiarism which I was most definitely not aware of before. The first one is “copy and paste plagiarism.” (Liles, J) I think of this plagiarism to be more obvious then the other kinds because it is directly taking someone else’s quote and inserting it into your paper without even rearranging it. If you do decide to use a direct quote you must always include quotation marks and make reference to what source you are using.
