Phonics is an important part of the school’s curriculum. Converting letters to recognizable print can be taught through phonics instruction and can lead to students comprehending the meaning of text. Phonics is an approach in which children are taught to decode words by using and applying their knowledge of the relationship between letters and individual sounds to read. In planning phonics instruction you will have to decide among several forms of phonics instruction. All the approaches include instruction in letter-sound relationships but vary in the explicitness of the instruction and how organized the process is in determining the sequence of instruction. In artificial approaches to instruction, students are taught the individual letter-sound relationships and then taught explicitly to blend the letters into words.
The children first learned the letters sound, letter syllables, and then reading text. Teachers are to incorporate letters sound in the Language Arts Planning. Phonics is very essential for communication. It is an expression of language, a means of communication through sounds. Phonics is one of the primary building blocks of reading. Without an understanding of the relationship between letters and sounds, reading cannot occur. The connection between print and pronunciation is an important component of any instructional program in reading because it provides readers with tools for discovering new written words. Phonics is also the foundation for future academics. Teaching about letters and vowel blends are an important component in learning to read. Thus, the reason teachers make lots of emphasis in teaching students phonics in the early years.

Significance:
Through this research the researcher expects that the Ministry of Education aids schools in resources and to conduct productive workshops to early childhood teachers to help in the improvement of teaching phonics within the urban schools. Many of the schools lack resources and a good source for the schools is to display attractive libraries within the classrooms by getting children story books and other useful colorful resource books which children can benefit and find interest in becoming better readers. The ministry can also assist in getting appliances such as TV so that children can observe short cartoon stories. Workshops are to be conducted in helping teachers with strategies to assist in teaching children phonics making an improvement in reading at a lower level.
