Abstract The purpose of this paper is to discuss characteristics of my personality. The main focus of this paper will be how my personality has developed over time. As I age and encounter new and different experiences, my personality has adapted and developed further. This paper will give an in-depth exploration into the people and events that have influenced my personality. Personality is defined as “a) the sum total of the physical, mental, emotional, and social characteristics of an individual. b) the organized pattern of behavioral characteristics of the individual” (Dictionary.com, 2010). Whether we realize it or not, personality defines us as people. There are many facets to my personality, that until I began this assignment, I never thought about. After some introspection, three of the biggest components that make up my personality are introverted, caring, and compassionate. Growing up, I was not a very outgoing child. I had friends, but I never actively sought out that connection; others would typically initiate any contact with me. Both of my parents are social people, as is my sister, but I adopted a more reserved nature around people. Once I got to know people, I would open up and be far more outgoing, it was just getting over that first hurdle of fear that held me back. Partly because of the fear of rejection from others in my peer group but also this fear of exposing too much of myself, I could not knock down the walls I have built around myself. Educationally, it has been difficult to be introverted and participate in coursework. I managed to get away with talking as little as possible during high school, but once I reached the university level, it became imposs... ... middle of paper ... ...use of our biological nature, that is, because of biological features that we inherited. On the other hand, our personality may reflect our nurturing, that is, our experiences in our family and in society" (Cervone & Pervin, 2010, p. 9). Personality comes from many different directions, but coming together to make me the person I am today. My personality has led me to make the choices I have concerning everything from friendships to my career path. I firmly believe that if my personality were different, I would not be who I am and where I am today. References Cervone, D., & Pervin, L. (2010). Personality: Theory and Research (11th ed.). What is personality? Are humans born with a personality or does it develop over time through personal experience? Each person has unique characteristic patterns of thinking, feeling, and behaving that stay consistent over time and across situations. Over the years, psychologists have approached the study of personality in many ways. Some psychologists set out to understand how personality develops, while others set out to understand why there are differences in personality. Humans are complex beings, changing in different situations and with different people, which makes personality too complex to easily be described. However, psychologists focus on studying the internal and external aspects of a person’s character that influence
Have you ever wondered, or thought where you have got your personality from? The debate over nature versus nurture is whether people like identical twins, for example, are born and raised by genetics,(nature) and if they are born and raised by influences and influenced by the environment around them(nurture). The debate over nature versus nurture is very important and cannot be ignored. Identical twins are different in many ways. Studies have shown that nurture, is more dominant than nature. My personality has also changed in many ways as I have been raised. So as you can see I am on the nurture side by far.
Eleanor Roosevelt once said, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Personality is characterized by many dimensions of a person’s overall being. The belief that personality stems from one origin is small minded and on many levels, unsupported. If the scope of personality is expanded, it suggests that there is not a single explanation determining a person’s personality and how it is formed. Personality Theories have been generated for centuries by individuals who desire to identify what distinguishes a person’s personality and how it affects their behaviors. What is it that comprises all the unique characteristics about a person?
I believe our personalities make up who we are and how others perceive us at times. Personalities are our own unique qualities, that we possess as individuals. In writing this short paper, I have found that psychologists use assessments to define an individual’s personality to determine their qualities and what makes them different from other individuals. Through the Big Five Personality test, I found it difficult to define and understand an individual personality
I love people. Since I am 81% extroverted, I gain energy from being with others and seek to make the people I love happy and one of my greatest joys is to see those I love succeed and have their dreams come true (16 Personalities, 2017). I am loyal, but I tend go somewhat overboard when trying to avoid conflict or make things work in a relationship. I can allow myself to be hurt by being transparent and then
Everybody's personality is different. Some may be extraversion's or narcissists, low self-monitoring or high self-monitoring and the list goes on. During this semester, taking Personality Theories has thought me more about myself than I have learned in my whole life. I believe that my personality stems from my family environment, my friends and society and then I get to choose what I think to be morally correct and what fits with my personality the best.
of personality. Those types were extrovert and introvert. However, I can relate to my style of
A person’s personality has been the subject of psychological scrutiny for many years. Psychologists have drawn up several theories in an attempt to accurately predict and determine one’s personality. Foremost amongst these, is the “Big Five Trait Theory” which stemmed from Raymond B. Cattell’s theory.
Personality is a branch of scientific discipline that studies temperament and its variation among people. It is a dynamic and a set of characteristics possessed by their atmosphere, cognitions, emotions, motivations and behaviours in various things. Personality conjointly refers to the pattern of thoughts, feelings, social adjustments and behaviour consistently exhibited over time that powerfully influences one’s exceptions, self-perceptions, values and attitudes. It also predicts human reactions to different folks, problems and stress.
I have a great comfort in engaging others and find it easy to communicate with people. When in a group or engaging with someone one-on-one, I do not find it uncomfortable to engage in a conversation or start one. The strengths I possess in my engagement skills are that I am an extrovert, compassionate, and communicate effectively. However, I do need to work on not always starting a conversation and allowing others to talk first. I also need to improve on my listening skills instead of always feeling that I need to make a contribution to the conversation. Even though I am able to communicate effectively, I sometimes need to remember that others deserve a chance to start an
I started to be more outgoing by changing my verbal and nonverbal communication methods. I looked more people in the eyes and for longer times, that I did before, and I also talked a lot more than I used to. I made myself come out of my shyness to be a very outgoing person who can talk to anyone, and I do talk to anyone and everyone. For example, I have been told by people that I can talk to anyone and everyone. I made myself like that, and it’s a big part of my personality. I also knew that outgoing people go places in life, and I made myself into someone who takes chances and speaks up when something is offered. Falconer explains it perfectly, “If you don’t become outgoing you will miss a huge chunk of the best parts of your life. Social unease and shyness can be crippling character traits. So not only will you miss out on good times but you will miss out on a lot of good opportunities.” (para. 4). If I was the old shy me, then I wouldn’t have all the opportunities that I would have had today. I love talking to people now. It’s probably one of the best things about me, because I can start a conversation with just about everyone, and make sure that I look into their eyes. It makes it seem that I am very interested in what they are saying, and most of the time I am interested in what they are saying. I used to be the kind of person who wouldn’t want to be seen in a big crowd, but now I want to be noticed. I realized that I’d rather be heard,
A personality is unique to each person, and has developed because of various elements in that person’s life. Theorists have studied personalities and their formation for hundreds of years now, and each theorist has their own view on how a personality is formed, and what affects the growth of that personality.
There are various influences on everyone’s lives while growing up. I believe the greatest of these influences is the neighborhood you grew up in. I grew up in a quite large, welcoming neighborhood. While living in this neighborhood, I was outgoing and remarkably talkative. Making friends became second nature to me. Playing outdoors from sunrise to sundown playing sports or exploring the outdoors with my friends became a daily routine for me. I was outgoing, talkative, and active. I believe this is the result of the neighborhood I grew up in.
As a young child I was a non social person, and did not like to participate in anything. I liked to be an individual person, and do things on my own. I was shy and not outgoing like all my other friends were. When I enter a situation for the first time, I have a hard time speaking up until I feel comfortable. As being as shy as I was, my school work was affected a lot because I would not raise my hand to ask questions if I did not understand something, or go to the teacher for help. It was hard to transition from that stage to being more outgoing and talk more with my peers. It was difficult to communicate with others becuase of this as well, i was not able to be the perosn that i really am.
Personality is the expression of a person’s traits according to ones feelings, mentality and behavior. It involves understanding individuals’ traits such as withdrawal and willpower and how various parts of an individual link together to form personality. Personality expresses itself from within an individual and is comparatively regular throughout in an individual’s life. Different people have different personalities dependent on factors such as environment and genetic composition. Our personality is dependent on the success or failure of our development in the eight stages of life. This is proposed by Erik Erikson. Success in the development stages lead to virtues while the failure leads to malignancies.
