Basketball has played a big role in my life thus far. The game of basketball to me means everything that I want to have for my city and for myself. I have a dream of holding up a state championship trophy for my team and for myself. I have put countless numbers of hours into what it would be like for this dream to become a reality. Next year will be my final year of high school basketball. Texas district realignment moved this super small 4A team to an extremely large 3A school. The chance of winning the state championship in 3A is much better than we could have if we had stayed in 4A. I continue to dream about that day that will hopefully happen in the next year of my life.
Although today’s game is much different than the original game, it has many of the same concepts. Basketball has always been a competitive sport. This game was designed to test both the accuracy, athleticism and stamina of the competitions. It was not until 1950 to 1970 that the business of televising games made basketball become a more offensive minded game. “The early pro rules allowed two-handed discontinued dribbles, which enabled players to simply bull there way to the basket. Head-butting a defender was deemed a savvy move“ (Resen 12). This was a transitional time when the game became more loosely officiated, slam dunks were allowed, a shot clock was added, and in the 80’s, the three point shot was added. In the early years, the game was mainly

made up of set shots, lay-ups and very good defense. It was very uncommon for teams to score more than 20-30 points each. This would have been considered a high scoring game.
The game of basketball was invented by Dr. James Naismith. The concept of basketball was born from Naismit...

Since its creation in 1893, the sport of basketball has been one of the most popular sports in the United States. One wouldn’t have to search long to find a basketball court and a pickup game in most American cities. Many people around the world look up to the stars of the National Basketball Association as role models.
James Naismith, a Canadian, invented the game of basketball when he moved to New England. He wanted an indoor game during winter months to help him and others stay active and physically fit. In 1898, the first professional basketball league was formed

Before we plunge into the vast world of basketball, you need to understand where, and how America’s beloved sport began! The first official game of basketball was played in a cramped YMCA gymnasium in Albany, New York on January 20, 1892, but the concept was conceived in a small gym, back in 1891. A Canadian sports coach named James Naismith was in desperate search of a new sport to keep his gym active during rainy days, when he decided to nail a peach basket to his elevated track and write the basic rules for the game, however, he never knew that his new and simple pastime would soon rise to become one of the most highly regarded sports in America.
As people look back on the sport of basketball, most would notice it was once six on six instead of five on five. In case someone doesn’t know what basketball is, it is a sport where teams try to advance the ball and shoot it through one basket and to keep the opposition from scoring through the other. Women’s basketball has grown rapidly since the 1970’s. Until then, women and girls had been allowed to play only a six-player game in which offensive and defensive players were rooted to one half of the court (Basketball). It seems completely bizarre to even think about the game with twelve players on the court rather than ten. An abundant amount of things changed when they transitioned into the new system of basketball. Defense, offense, amount
Many of us know of the fun game of basketball, the object of the game is to basically run up and down the court and shoot the ball, and block the other team when they try to score. Whichever team has the most points at the end of the game is the winner. According to Bran Faurschou’s article, “ NBA Hoops Online” Basketball was invented in 1891 by, Dr. James Naismith. He was a physical education instructor. Back then the game of basketball was a little bit different, It was the same concept but it was different. When Dr. James was working as the physical education instructor at the YMCA training school, he came up with the game of basketball as an activity for his
When the league was created, the game was only made up of seventeen teams, both from small and large cities(History.com Staff NBA is born). The first NBA finals was played in 1947, and the first All-Star game was in 1951(NBA.com NBA Top Moments). However, through the 1950s fan support was lacking. By 1954, the NBA was down to only eight teams(History.com Staff NBA is born). This same year a person by the name of Leo Ferris invented the twenty-four second shot clock. This helped speed up the pace of play, which allowed the game to become faster and more exciting. In the 1960s the NBA was beginning to grow, but a rival league known as the American Basketball Association of the ABA challenged the NBA. However, this didn’t last long, by 1976 the ABA and NBA merged into one league. Another milestone for the
It takes time to really learn the ins and outs of the game and also to get a good handle on things. The game of basketball started in Springfield Massachusetts and has now become on of the most popular sports nationally known. The game was designed to improve skill and not just require strength (Laughead). The game came from the idea of another game called “duck-on-a-rock”. The objective of the game was to knock the dock off of the rock using another rock. The game of basketball was born at the YMCA training center in Massachusetts. The students at the training center were bored with all the athletic games and needed something new. That’s when Dr. James Naismith came along and invented basketball (Laughead).
Basketball is a popular sport that millions of people play around the world but does everyone know how basketball started and how it evolved throughout history? “Many people do not know that basketball was around since the early 1890s. In 1891, James Naismith, a Canadian-American sports teacher invented this simple sport”(Livestrong.com). Certainly the rules and the style of play wasn’t similar as today’s game. When it was first played in the early ages, there were more carrying the ball and tackling other players in order to get the ball.
Basketball has become an international sport. People all around the world enjoy playing it with friends, or even competing for a championship. But haven’t you always wondered where it all began, who were the first people to play it, and who thought of something as simple as putting a ball through a hoop?
Basketball was created by a man named Dr. James Naismith. He created this game not for fun, but because Springfield College’s (then known as the International YMCA Training School) Physical Education class needed a new game to play.
Backstory of Basketball Basketball has been played since 1891, and still continues to be played today as well. Basketball is an intriguing game played by 2 teams with 5 players from each team on the court at the same time. Basketball, as it started out in 1891 had no African American athletes in the sport. That was still going on, even as late as the 1950’s.
The sport basketball was created in 1981 and has grown to be one of the most popular sports to be played worldwide. To think that this life altering activity was thought of by only one man, Dr. James Naismith, a Physical Instructor at the YMCA Training school. Which was in Springfield, Massachusetts. Naismith was under the instructions of the head physical education board when he had the brilliant idea. He was given an enduring two weeks to come up with an indoor game that would give an “athletic distraction” for a jumpy class to participate in through the harsh winter approaching them. All he had was his own mind and a small indoor space to some how create a new game to be played. Naismith succeeded and his creation is now a big time sport played by millions all around the world.
Although many sports are not considered American-made, basketball is one of the few that began in America. In fact it is the only major sport that can be considered American-made (Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The inventor of basketball was Dr. James Naismith, who created the sport in 1891(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). This was all the way back when there were only forty-four states(nbahoopsonline.com, NBA History). He made the sport in Springfield, Massachusetts(History.com Staff, NBA is Born). Naismith invented this sport because he was P.E. teacher seeking a sport with limited physical contact, but it contained running, jumping, shooting, and hand-eye coordination(Encyclopedia.com, Basketball). The game first used peach baskets and a soccer like ball(History.com Staff,
