Prompt: Penelope is the ideal woman for Odysseus. What are some common characteristics that they share? How many couples can remain faithful to each other even when they have been separated for twenty years? In The Odyssey by Homer, Penelope overcomes numerous obstacles to wait for Odysseus’s return while he struggles to overcome the perils of his journey and return to Penelope. By overcoming these challenges, Penelope and Odysseus demonstrate their shared characteristics of loyalty and cunning that make them ideal for each other. One important characteristic that Penelope and Odysseus share is their loyalty to each other. Odysseus failed to return home seven years after the Trojan war. Because he is assumed dead, 108 wealthy noblemen and princes invade his palace and refuse to leave until Penelope has married one of them. By marrying her, the suitors hope to gain control over Odysseus’s wealth and power. However, Penelope remains faithful to Odysseus. But, as a woman, she is powerless to remove the suitors from the palace. And without a man in the household, she is subject to her father’s decisions. However, despite his wish for her to remarry, Penelope clings to the hope of Odysseus’s return and remains faithful to him. She waits and gathers information by asking strangers who arrive in Ithaca about Odysseus. She goes through the stories of their encounter point by point, and asks about every detail while tears stream down her eyes. Although the suitors promise her a secure future, Penelope continues to wait for Odysseus. Without Odysseus, she does not believe that she will ever be happy again. Odysseus, meanwhile, was shipwrecked on his journey home from Troy. He is trapped on the island of the beautiful goddess Calypso. ... ... middle of paper ... ... happiness. This tricks the passerby into believing that a feast is taking place within the palace, giving Odysseus an extra day to prepare for battle. His preparation and allies proved to be crucial to his victory against the suitors’ relatives. Penelope and Odysseus both used their cunning to turn unfavourable situations to their advantage. By working together, they reclaimed the kingdom. Despite the challenges they face during their twenty year separation, Penelope and Odysseus remain sincere to each other. Even though Penelope and Odysseus are offered lives of ease, they both choose to remain loyal to each other. This loyalty allows them to use their cunning to overcome the odds and reclaim their kingdom. The hardships that Penelope and Odysseus endure for each other and challenges they overcome strengthen their relationship, making them perfect for each other.
