The Pearl / John Steinbeck
Main idea- The main idea of the book is the story of an Indian fisherman, who found a big, beautiful pearl, "the pearl of the world" as it was called in the book. During all the story he tries to sell the pearl for a good price so he could marry his wife again in a normal church, provide his son an opportunity to go to school and some more nice stuff. Also in the story he has to deal with some not nice, mysterious guys, who try to take it away from him.
Plot general- One pretendedly usual night, Kino (the fisherman, the husband, and the father) woke up in his bush house, in a village, and saw a scorpion who climbed to Coyotito's (the son) bed. So, he and Joana (the wife, the mother) tried with no success to remove the scorpion from the baby. The baby was stung, and he needed immediately a doctor, although Joana tried to suck out the poison from the baby. The nearest doctor was in a city, but it didn't matter to the parents, as the baby was their firstborn. They went to the doctor accompanied with their village people (during the entire story every one of the village people knows exactly what happens to another villager). The doctor refused to give a treatment to the baby, as Kino had too little and too few pearls to pay with. When the "delegation" returned to the village Kino and Juana took with them Coyotito, and went to the river, so Kino would search for better pearls. Kino found only one pearl, but it was a very big, and a very beautiful pearl. When he showed Joana the pearl, they noticed that the swelling on the baby's body was already decreased, so there was a twice bigger happiness. When they came back to the shore, the whole village already knew that Kino had found " the pearl of the world", and a really short time later the village surroundings (the city doctor, the city pearl buyers and etc.) knew it also. Kino decided to go the next day to the city, sell there the pearl, get the money, marry his wife again in the church, buy himself a riffle and finance his son's studying. As it was expected, that evening the doctor himself came to the family bush house and healed the baby (maybe it was only a pretending: the doctor gave the baby some powders, which may caused the baby's crying later.
...the rich (higher class) refuse to help the poor (lower class). Having this included in The Pearl,definitely shows you that their are many social problem in their culture. Finding familiar elements in literature can improve your understanding and enjoyment of the reading. I believe this because when you make a connection with the story you tend to have better understanding because you can relate it to other literature you have read and see the similarities. It also adds to your enjoyment of the book because when you see these connections it gives you a deeper meaning of what the other is say. It also allows you to predict possible events to come in the story. I would definitely recommend reading How to Read Like Literature Professor before you read your next novel. Doing so would not only further your skills as a reader, but also improve your enjoyment of reading.
In John Steinbeck’s, The Pearl, the village of La Paz is alive with greed. Everyone wants something from the main character, Kino. The doctor wants money for treating Kino's baby. The priest wanted money to fix the church. The townspeople also wanted money. The village is over come by evil from this one man's good fortune. As Kino and Juana are eating, a scorpion descends on the little Coyotito threatening to sting him. Coyotito sees the scorpion on his cradle, and reaches out to grab it. Coyotito shakes the cradle, which makes the scorpion fall and land on his shoulder and sting him. Kino sees what the scorpion has done and grabs it and crushes it in his hand. Juana grabs Coyotito and begins sucking the venom out of the wound. The child continues to moan and their neighbors begin to gather outside of their hut. Juana tells Kino to summon the doctor, but Kino does not have much hope that he will come. Juana grabs Coyotito and runs out of their hut towards the doctor’s house. Kino and the rest of the neighbors follow. Once they have reached the doctor, a servant is waiting outside his house. They tell him that their baby child needs to see the doctor immediately. The servant tells them to wait, while he calls the doctor. The servant comes back and tells Kino that he doctor is very busy today and won’t be able to help them...
'This child ... hath come from the hand of God, to work in many ways upon her heart ... It was meant for a blessing, for the one blessing of her life! It was meant, doubtless ... for a retribution too; a torture to be felt at many an unthought-of moment; a pang, as sting, an ever-recurring agony, in the midst of a troubled joy!" (Hawthorne 105)
Kino found one of the most valuable and precious pearls in the world and being convinced of its worth was not going to be cheated by only minimally upgrading his condition of life. Instead he wanted to break the fixed life and role that he and his family had and always would live. Kino refuses the maximum offer of fifteen hundred pesos that would easily ease his and his family’s pain and suffering for the coming months. Kino is then determined to trek to the capital to find a fair and just offer. Kino continues determined through the mountains after an attempt at the pearl, his canoe destroyed and his hut set a blaze. Continuing to put his family’s life on the line. It eventually takes the death of his beloved son Coyotito to make him realize he needs to stop being so greedy, no matter how hard he tries and to shut his mouth and know his role.
In conclusion, Kino and I must return to the village and throw away the pearl because it is has completely changed his personality and placed our family in jeopardy. The pearl has brought evil to our family and has not helped us prosper in any way. Therefore, this pearl is useless and evil, and should not be a part of our family any longer.
The most important theme was the self-discovery of the protagonist. The reader is brought into the life of this young man and is shown all of the high and the low points. From the very beginning of this novel, Siddhartha was in. search for the truth of the truth. What he had in store for himself was many years of discontent, but finally he found what he was looking for.
The Scarlet letter is a novel written by Nathaniel Hawthorne. The plot focuses on sin in the Puritan society. Hester Prynne, the protagonist, has an affair with Reverend Dimmesdale, which means they are adulterers and sinners. As a result, Pearl is born and Hester is forced to where the scarlet letter. Pearl is a unique character. She is Hester’s human form of her scarlet letter, which constantly reminds her of her sin, yet at the same time, Pearl is a blessing to have since she represents the passion that Hester once had.
Family stick’s together through the good times and especially, during the worst times. Although Pearl does not seem to be behaving properly, maybe there are some other women who can nurture her with more stringency and teach her to be more self-restraint, but taking child from her own mother would not be fair and respectable for human being. Hester should keep Pearl because they both are connected to one another; Pearl has everything she needs as a child; and they only have themselves to each other.
Readers can tell from the statement that many of the people Kino encounters after finding the pearl become bitter “friends”. At this point, Kino and Juana begin to realize that the pearl is bringing bad luck upon them. They are taken advantage of by the doctor and he decides to visit them after knowing they have the pearl. “This pearl is like a sin”(56). Juana begins to realize the pearl is bringing them bad luck, but Kino still trusts that it’s a gift. Readers can also assume that people are trying to take the pearl when Kino is suddenly attacked during the night. “Blood oozed down from his scalp and there was a long…”(56). Readers can now confirm that the pearl has changed and now represents evil. The pearl also begins to destroy Kino and Juana’s relationship as they have different opinions on what to do with the pearl. After Kino wakes up and follows Juana when she wakes up and walks out, readers know he has started to lose full trust in her. “He rolled up to his feet and followed her silently as she had gone” (58). Through the symbolism of the pearl and what it brings upon Kino and Juana, the author emphasizes how the pearl is not what it first appears to be, which was
Kino, Juana, and Coyotito go back to the beach and row out to an oyster bed, where he begins to search for the pearl. As Kino continues to search, Juana takes things into her own hands after being refused by the doctor and sucks the poison out of Coyotito and then puts seaweed on the wound, unknowingly healing him. Meanwhile Kino gathers several small oysters but suddenly comes across a particularly large oyster. He picks the oyster up and returns to the surface. When Kino opens the oyster he discovers the pearl. Word that the pearl has been discovered travel through the town quickly. People in the town became jealous of Kino and his family which eventually leads to a great deal of harm.
After Kino found his great pearl bad things started happening, Kino and Juana's lives were in trouble. Two men notified in the book as the "dark ones" tried to steal the pearl, luckily Kino had been prepared and got rid of the enemies but that was not the end of the misery. Coyotito got very sick and the Doctor had deliberately made things worse. When it was time to sell the pearl, the buyers offered prices that Kino thought were too low. Kino was angry with the pearl buyers for what they had said. "I will not make an offer at all. I do not want it. This is not a pearl - it is a monstrosity." Kino got angry and decided he wanted to go elsewhere and find a buyer for the pe...
Microsoft Encarta defines superstition to be an irrational but usually deep-seated belief in the magical effects of a particular action or ritual, especially in the likelihood that good or bad luck will result from performing it. Religion is defined as people's beliefs and opinions concerning the existence, nature, and worship of a deity or deities, and divine involvement in the universe and human life.
This leads to change and, eventually, downfall. Before he finds the pearl, Kino “was a well-liked man” (43), and adored by all of his neighbors. Everyone looked up to his kindness and sympathy, but when he finds the Pearl, he changes. The pearl takes control over him, and he becomes too obsessed with getting his money. He loses his many things over it: “now it is my misfortune and my life and I will keep it” (66). The neighbors even suspect, “‘what a pity it would be if the pearl should destroy them all.’” (43) For example, KIno loses his family when he tries to protect the pearl and defies the pearl buying system, and when he mishandles Juana. Loisng his canoe symbolizes thi sloss of his family. He also loses his sanity. he beats Juana and kills four men. He “‘killed a man’” (61) and joins in many fights. For greed, he turns down the salesman`s offer for the pearl and ends with nothing left. Kino has the chance to take the money offered to him and be done, but he is greedy and he wants more. Then, at the end of the book, Kino throws the pearl into the sea, and with it, all the money he could possibly gain. He also lets the doctor treat Coyotito, even with his doubts, and now can not pay him because the pearl is his payment method, which is now gone. He thinks his money is secure, and in his mind, he is a rich man. This is not necessarily true, as readers learn, and because he was so secure, he must now pay for unnecessary

The doctor who would not treat Coyotito's scorpion bite when they had no money now comes to them offering the best medical care he can provide.As the story of Kino's situation unfolds, Kino is forced to kill three men, and worst of all, Kino accidentally shoots Coyotito in the head while he is trying to shoot his pursuers.
