Part time employment has increased dramatically in the last decade. There are more than five million teenagers who have part time jobs. The research suggest that teenagers are twice as likely to work in todays economy than in 1950’s. More teenagers are getting jobs during school at a time when there is concern about improving the nation's academics performance of secondary schools. There are two perspective for part time employment. There are work complements school and work supplements school (www.tandfonline.com).
The first view, work complements school, encourages that work during school brings a smooth transition from school to work after high school. It will bring a smooth transition because students know how to be responsible and get things done on time. They will know how to manage their time. Research also suggest that students who work are more prepared for the work world. It considers that they will have more job opportunities and will earn higher wages later in life. They will be more prepared because when a student has work and school they have to know how to be organized. Work helps a student a become more organized because it gives them more responsibility and makes them keep their stuff straight. If a person does not keep their stuff straight they tend to get lost and then have minny panic attacks. Without responsibility a person will never be able to go anywhere in life. A person always has to be responsible and prepared (www.tandfonline.com).
Work allows a student to become more prepared because it shows them what is expected when it comes to the work world. When a student knows what is expected, they start working on things that will help them become more prepared. They start looking at classes t...

In ending, there are both positive and negative affects of being part-time employed. Being employed does not allow a student to spend time with their friends or play after school sports and it also can have an affect on their grades and how well they do in school. If a student is not employed they are able to do more after school activities and hang out with friends. Being employed can be a good thing and a bad thing for high school students.

In Andrew Braaksma 's essay Some Lessons From The Assembly Line he provides the perspective of a college student learning life lessons from his summer job in a factory and how it showed him not to take his ability to have a higher education for granted. While most students never give it a second thought about not going to college, Braaksma learned from the hard work and low pay to appreciate the opportunities he has. Most college age students have never experienced the struggles of what real life can throw at them. Long hours with low wages, the physically taxing nature of some of these jobs and lack of job security. Having myself worked construction jobs for many years before going back to college his essay could prove invaluable to many students.
Summary: In the essay, “Part-time Employment Undermines a Student’s Commitment to School” by Laurence Steinberg, it explains how studies show that teenagers that work while attending school are more likely to loose their commitment to school. Steinberg tells the effects on students when they work more than twenty hours a week. His theory was that students are more susceptible to losing their interest in school, while working. They may have to work in the evening time, which can interfere with homework, sleep and diet. Steinberg also elaborated on how these students that work receive money that can make school seem less desirable. Also because they do receive money, they can use their extra money to become associated with drugs and alcohol.

In the article “Working Through College Pays Off”, the author Randy Raterman show his idea about agreeing students working through college by using particular details. He supports that working through college can stimulate students undertake education more seriously, teaching them responsibility and supports their parents financial burden. First, the author thinks working students take hard works to exceed at school and quit tiresome jobs. It motivates them to study harder. Secondly, students understand the payment for college, which takes responsibility from taking job. In addition, the pressure of deficient funds for education can cause problems between the parents. Working students can relieve the financial difficulties form their family and also help their parents saving money. In my opinion, I

There are a lot of theories when it comes to students and jobs. Many state that students do poorly and are distracted while others say it does nothing to students. There is a certain theory by Professor Laurence Steinberg in which he states its affecting students negatively. In “Part-Time Employment Undermines Students’ Commitment to School”, Professor Laurence Steinberg explains the conflict between school and work. Steinberg states that students who work during the school year tend to get lower grades in school than those who do not work. In my opinion, I feel as though his research may have had its mistakes because he only did the research on high school students’ instead of college students; doing the research on college students would of helped Steinberg get more a accurate result.
Some will argue, older students can sit longer, therefor can take in additional amounts of homework, but it has also shown that these students may fail a test if they studied too long. The logic behind this came from tenth through twelfth graders. It appears that the achievement seems to improve when student do homework, although after doing one-and-a-half or more hours of it a night, achievement declines. The success in school tends to increase by having smaller amounts of homework. A person’s brain needs downtime to process information
Working a job while in college can give a student great time management skills. The years of work experience can also lead the student to being successful to getting another job and having good business skills. Research has shown that working less than 20 hours can actually help give a student an edge in college when compared to a student who does not work at all. "Part-time jobs seem to improve academic performance. Research shows students who work no more than 20 hours a week have higher grades and are more likely to graduate college than both those who don 't work at all and those who put in too many hours." Having a job can greatly help out with future financial issues as
As Boekaerts and Corno pointed out in 2005, although teachers set goals and expectations for homework, students must independently complete homework by practicing self-regulatory and responsibility. Behaviors such as planning, inhibiting distractions, persisting at difficult assignments, organizing the environment, overcoming unwanted emotions, and reflecting on what they have learned are developed in the process of complete an assigned homework. “Children who complete homework outside of school often develop an aptitude for academic work through extra practice and are responsible for regulating their own behavior, making homework a classic form of self-regulated learning” (197). Other researchers such as Zimmerman, Bonner, and Kovach acknowledge that these skills (responsibility and discipline) promote positive behaviors that, in addition to being important for academic pursuits, generalize to other life domains. “Because homework generally requires students to complete tasks with less supervision and under less severe time constraints than is the case in school, home study is said to promote greater self-direction and self-discipline attributes apply to the nonacademic spheres of life as well as the academic” (1). Furthermore, not only does homework instill positive attitudes that would last a life time, it also brings families closer together and strengthens team work amongst them. In Hoover Dempsey’s article titled The Motivational Benefits of Homework, “teachers can use homework to increase parents' appreciation of and involvement in schooling” (2).
College life for many new graduates can be a turn off, especially after years of public education, and the thought of spending more time in class is too much to bear. Still, others may decide it is too early to join the workforce, and choose to enroll in a college instead. The workload for college students can be difficult due to the expense of attending, increased complexity of coursework, and self-governing responsibility needed to succeed. Nonetheless, those who enter the real world can expect rigid work schedules, usually less than adequate pay, and uncertain economic job markets. One noticeable aspect of the real world is the demands employers may place upon his or her employees. Some employers maintain stiff attendance policies and fixed performance quotas. Staying the entire du...
A summer or part-time job pays more than money. Even though the money earned is important, the work experience gained has a greater long-term value when one applies for a full-time job after graduation from school. Job application documents (the application blank and the personal data sheet) ask you to list jobs you have held and to list as references the names of individuals who supervised your work. (Gieseking and Plawin, 1994, 22)
These activities, not homework will ensure that our children are happy and competitive in a highly competitive world.” (Bennett and Kalish). Homework may cause more harm to students and children at such an early age rather than having a positive effect. Others claim that homework regulation is a serious matter that should have parents more aware of this issue. If teachers would either regulate the amount of homework they assign, then students would actually be able to enjoy their school years before entering the working
Nowadays, more students do part-time job during their school days to earn money or to have practical experience. In this essay, I am going to compare and contrast the different attitudes toward students doing part-time job in China and USA. In China, there are only a few types of part-time job, such as shopkeeper and working in factories. However, in USA, it is possible for students to work in various kinds of shop or even work as intern in companies. As a result, there are
Nowadays, the numbers of students who are always looking for a part time job while they are attending college is increasing every day. According to an article was published in 1998 on The Futurist, the number of students who have a part-time job increased from 5% of students in the 1950s to almost 70% of the students in some communities (“Jobs hurt school performance” n. page). Because of a bunch of fee and cost that students have to handle, working during college seems to be a necessity than an option. The part-time jobs provide not only paychecks but also experience, skills for the students. It is very helpful for the students after they graduate college and look for a real job. Although there are some people who argue that having a job during
Nowadays in the era of globalization, students are encouraged to have work part-time that will create them to become more experienced in their future, teach them to become more independent and mature in real life. Although the students have enough money to pay their fees and able to accommodate the necessities of life but we totally agree that the working part-time should be encouraged because work part-time can give more benefits to students. According to King and Bannon (2002, p. 2), more than 50 percent of full-time students have jobs and “nearly 46% of all full-time employed students work 25 hours or more.” As students work more, they have less time to become engaged in campus life both inside and outside the classroom. Many students love to have part-time jobs. Their parents approve it easily as they are said to gain experience from working. However, having a job is a big responsibility for a student. Before, teenagers at their age were working to help their family because of poverty. Nevertheless, they were actually eager to study and learn at school for their future. It was not the same as the students nowadays where they are more likely competing to each other to have a job. Most of the students are working part-time jobs and some have the intention to work. When we are in any fast food restaurant, supermarket or shop, there are must be school students who are working. Besides, students can gain a lot of experiences, students should be encouraged to work part-time because they can learn new skills and learn how to manage their financial properly.
