Recommended: Interpretation of oedipus the king

Fate to most people is something that will inevitably happen in their lives, something that they are destined to have or to be. According to Dictionary.com, fate is defined as something that unavoidably befalls a person, but to others, fate is merely coincidence. The debate whether fate is apart of our everyday lives have been going on since the ancient greeks to today. The movie Crash parallels to the play, Oedipus the King, in that both of the characters experience some form of fate in their lives. Henceforth, this essay will discuss the media's portrayal of fate and how it is indeed, a part of our everyday lives. In the novel, Oedipus The King, Oedipus' father, Laius, met with the Oracle of Delphi who foretells him that his son will inevitably kill him and marry his wife. Lacking a common conscience, Laius attempts to kill his son but he was not successful in that he did not realize that Oedipus did not die; rather he was severely injured. Because of the existence of fate, Oedipus was able to survive the heinous treatment done by his father, and one day he will return and fulfill the prophecy by killing his father. After Oedipus answers the riddle by the Sphinx, he was crowned king of Thebes and ended up marrying an older woman named Jocasta, who he fails to realize is his mother. When Oedipus meets an elderly man at the crossroads, he becomes uncontrollably mad and ultimately kills him. The elderly man turns out to be Laius, Oedipus' father. One of Oedipus' natural flaws concerning the issue of admitting himself in killing his father, is that he is overly supercilious and has a God Complex in ruling Thebes. Fate is something we all have come a crossed in our lives. Whether it is where we are going in life or how we live our life, there is some form of fate that guides us in doing so. Like in Oedipus, he is destined to kill his father and marry his mother but because he believes that he can control his own fate it ultimately leads to his demise. Also with the movie Crash where racial discrimination is a part of fate in which because you are born with this skin color, it is destined that you are judged your whole life no matter what little good you may have done. To conclude, fate is something we all share as humans, and as humans, we tend to believe that we can control our fate, but in the end fate is just a four letter word that may or may not change your life forever.

While searching for the murderer of Laius, Creon recommends that Oedipus ask the blind prophet, Teiresias, for his thoughts. Teiresias and Oedipus begin an argument after the prophet accuses Oedipus as the murderer, and Oedipus retaliates by calling the blind man a fool. Teiresias responds with “A fool?
