There are positive and negative sides to every event and the Industrial Revolution was no exception. There were many improvement accompanied by drawbacks during the industrialization. During the Industrial Revolution, new directions of science were taken, new ways of life were started, and new technologies were invented and these positive result of industrialization outweighed the pains it brought upon the people and environment. With science taking a new direction, people became healthier as vaccines, pasteurization, anesthesia, antiseptics, and the importance of personal hygiene were introduced. With the scientific advancements, scientists were able to study deadly diseases more closely. After the germ theory was introduced, Louis Pasteur developed vaccines to combat rabies and anthrax and introduced pasteurization to killed disease-carrying microbes in milk. The discovery of vaccinations enabled people to become immune to the deadly diseases out in the world. Florence Nightingale introduced the necessary sanitary measures that each hospitals should take and Joseph Lister discovered antiseptics that should be used to sterilize instruments before being used to operate surgeries. After these introductions of sanitary measures in hospitals, the rate of patients who died of infection days after the surgery decreased. People were able to live longer and survive more diseases, consequently increased the population and supply of workers. As cities started to industrialize, farmers crowded into cities for job opportunities. These farmers became factories workers or miners who faced harsh conditions as they were packed into tenements with no running water, sewage, or clean drinking water. The wide usage of steam-powered locomotives and railroads only intensified the air pollution. But, without these exploitations, the world would never be as it is now. Without the developments such as the steam-engine, countries wouldn’t be able to develop machines that increase the productivity and lower the prices of goods. The positive results of the Industrial Revolution was worth the negative consequences it brought onto Earth because cities wouldn’t be able to develop and half of the population would continue to farm and use the putting-out system to make clothes and goods. In relation to society and environment today, the steam engine and coal production has caused large negative effects. The worldwide producer of energy, coal, has caused the air supply to lack the amount of oxygen our bodies need, due to the releasing of carbon into the air. The high amounts of air pollution have resulted in many deaths and contractions of lung diseases. The deadly fog is not seen today, but could easily return if we do not seek better resources for energy. The life expectancy in London in now 78 for a male and 83 for female, which shows the improvement of the environment due to the Clean Air Act. The Steam Engines is still in use today, but has been generally modified to fit society’s needs of clean air.

During the 1800’s majority of people thought the infections that were killing people after surgery were due to the chemical damage from the air. Medical instruments were not sterilized before surgery and the doctors/surgeons were not even required to wash their hands before surgery in this specific era. The Industrial Revolution was a time of great change and increased efficiency. No more would be goods be produced by sole means of farming and agriculture, but now by the use of machinery and factories. Technology was beginning to increase along with the food supply as well as the population. However, this increase in population would greatly impact the social aspect of that time. Urbanization was becoming much more widespread. Cities were becoming overwhelmingly crowded and there was an increase in disease as well as harsh child labor. Industrialization changed the lives of many, including immigrants and the working class in the United States. As a result of industrialization, many Americans were drawn to cities since that is where most of the industrial reform took place. This obviously created more jobs and became a major advantage for the working class, especially immigrants. This lead to a booming growth in the economy and factories. This helped drive forward the revolution which would not have happened if it were not for the steam engine. “During the 19th century, the development of railroads changed the face of transportation forever. By 1850, trains were able to travel between 30 and 50 miles an hour to speed both raw materials and consumer goods across Europe” (Curth). With trains being able to transport raw materials and consumer goods at over 30 miles per hour, the efficiency of factories would have increased greatly.
