Summary
The article I choose to focus on is called Our 19TH- Century Curriculum by Andy Kessler. Basically the paper denounces the current curriculum that is used in high schools and especially in colleges. As the title shows, Kessler calls it a 19th Century curriculum because he believes that the curriculum that was used then is the same one used now. This is exactly what he states as the problem. Kessler starts off with emphasizing that college graduates are not getting jobs because they are not taught relevant information. “Look no further than the huge disconnect between what colleges are turning out and what employers want in new hires.” In this quote it exemplifies Kessler’s idea that the curriculum is not only outdated but it also not developing industry skilled workers.
The solution he comes about is changing the curriculum so it can match the modern age. Kessler shows that the class subjects used beforehand are not necessary in the jobs and environment of today and suggests that a new university syllabus that reflects the changes over the years can be the uplift of our generation. The article indicates that the syllabus should be more practical and realistic. It also states that technology, being a huge part of today’s culture, should be integrated in our educational programs. The piece emphasizes that the subjects that are vital are not used, and instead the subjects used for the olden days are the ones being used in a modern generation.

In this article Nemko is illuminating the issues that our modern society is facing involving higher education. Students are starting off college with bare minimum requirements for next level learning and feeling disappointed when they are not succeeding in their courses. The author acknowledges that the courses being taken by students are sometimes not beneficial to life after college. Nemko states, “A 2006 study supported by the Pew Charitable Trusts found that 50 percent of college seniors scored below ‘proficient’ levels on a test that required them to do such basic tasks…”(525). American’s education system has been entering crisis mode for a long time. Throughout the past few years, the overwhelming question “Is college needed or worth it?” While it is an opinion, there are facts that back up each answer. Plato’s “Allegory of the Cave” mentions that the enlightened must help the unenlightened and further their knowledge. The problem with America today is that high school students are given the option of college and that makes for less enlightened people. While it is possible to learn in the work force or Army, college is a better option. Mary Daly wrote the article “Is It Still Worth Going to College?” which talks about the statistical value of attending. Michelle Adam wrote the article “Is College Worth It?” which mentions the struggle young people are going through to even get into college. Education did not form part of the life of women before the Revolutionary War and therefore, considered irrelevant. Women’s education did not extend beyond that of what they learned from their mothers growing up. This was especially true for underprivileged women who had only acquired skills pertaining to domesticity unlike elite white women during that time that in addition to having acquired domestic skills they learned to read a result becoming literate. However, once the Revolutionary War ended women as well as men recognized the great need for women to obtain a greater education. Nonetheless, their views in regards to this subject differed greatly in that while some women including men believed the sole purpose of educating women was in order to better fulfil their roles and duties as wives and mothers others believed the purpose of education for women was for them “to move beyond the household field.” The essays of Benjamin Rush and Judith Sargent Murray provide two different points of view with respects to the necessity for women to be well educated in post-revolutionary America.
Recent high school graduates are not well prepared to face society as it really is cruel, confusing, and tough. In school students are not taught skills they will need out of the classroom, what they are taught is memorization, and multiple choice test taking in which they can guess their way through or just simply cheat. In the article “For Once, Blame the Students” by the author Patrick Welsh he states that “Failure in the classroom is often tied to lack of funding, poor teachers or other skills. Here 's a thought: Maybe it 's the failed work ethic of today’s kids” (Welsh). In recent years, many have debated whether or not a college education is a necessary requirement to succeed in the field of a persons’ choice and become an outstanding person in society. On one hand, some say college is very important because one must contribute to society. The essay Three Reasons College Still Matters by Andrew Delbanco shows three main reasons that students should receive their bachelor’s degree. On the other hand, many question the point of wasting millions of dollars on four years or maybe more to fight for highly competitive jobs that one might not get. Louis Menand wrote an article based on education titled Re-Imagining Liberal Education. This article challenges the main thought many americans have after receiving a secondary education. Louis Menand better illustrates the reasons why a student should rethink receiving a post secondary education better than Andrew Delbanco’s three reasons to continue a person’s education.
As a young girl in school, I always believed that I would one day would be successful and had the hope that a college education would assist me in being successful. I exceled in school even with circumstances such as hurricane Katrina and September 11 and had a thirst for knowledge. At the same time, the teachers that influenced me in life convinced me to attend college for the betterment of knowledge and a potential for a job or a career. However, those same teachers were teaching me textbook methods and no real on hand training that is essential in an education especially a college education. In "Vocation or Exploration? Pondering the Purpose of College”, Alina Tugend ponders the idea of college being either Vocation—job training— or Exploration learning. She starts off by referring to her oldest son is about to graduate high school, but quickly goes straight to the point of her essay with “What exactly is a university education for?” She provides answers such as college is a way to automatically receive a job if one majors in science, technology or a major that can be applied to a changing world that we live
In his article, “Live and Learn : Why We have College” published on June 6, 2016, by author and professor of several public and Ivy league universities, Louis Menand writes an article about college and why we have college. Menand claims that society wants to know the intelligent people as early as possible in order to figure out what career suits them that would make use of their talents to its maximum (Menand). In support to his statement, he points out that, “College is a process that is sufficiently multifaceted and fine-grained to do this” (Menand). Menand develops his argument by saying that, college is like a four year test for a student.
An astounding 300,000 positions are outsourced annually throughout the country (creditdonkey.com). Outsourcing is the process of receiving services or goods from foreign suppliers for our economy’s benefits. Offshore outsourcing however is the process of getting certain jobs done from overseas suppliers. This topic is highly controversial because many people find it to be taking advantage of foreign countries and their workers. Although some critics claim it is not fair to the foreign workers, outsourcing can truly help out America’s economy because it allows U.S. companies to sell to foreign markets with overseas branches, American businesses gain high profit margins, and it greatly increases the creativity and efficiency of the economy.
Studying a university degree is one of the biggest achievements of many individuals around the world. But, according to Mark Edmunson, a diploma in America does not mean necessarily studying and working hard. Getting a diploma in the United States implies managing with external factors that go in the opposite direction with the real purpose of education. The welcome speech that most of us listen to when we started college, is the initial prank used by the author to state the American education system is not converging in a well-shaped society. Relating events in a sarcastic way is the tone that the author uses to explain many of his arguments. Mark Edmunson uses emotional appeals to deliver an essay to the people that have attended College any time in their life or those who have been involved with the American education system.
Education is a means a form of learning in which knowledge and skills are transferred from generation to the next generation. The role of educations is a vital investment for both the development of economic and human development and education is influenced by the type of environment that is exits. The changes within technology, labour market patterns and general global environment, all require the response of policy. Will traditions, culture and faith are all reflected upon the education system. The element of continuity and change remains perpetual and it is up to the civilisation to regulate its pace and direction.
While curriculum documents make many demands, they are inherently flexible documents that do not crowd the school year anymore than a teacher chooses. It is both logical and specified by policy () for curriculums to be integrated, which enables more time to cater individual student needs and develop interdisciplinary skills and knowledge. In the quest for efficient and effective models, inquiry has come to the fore. Therefore, facts, content and processes in contemporary Australian curriculums are best taught by integrating different learning areas through inquiry. This is consistent with the author’s personal philosophy of teaching and learning(Hamilton, 2016), and can be demonstrated through policy documents; the curriculum; and inquiry models.
Outsourcing is a technique for companies to reassign specific responsibilities to external entities. There are several motivations for outsourcing including organizational, improvement, cost, and revenue advantages (Ghodeswar & Vaidyanathan, 2008).
Attending public schools as a child, I remember learning the basic skills on how to add and subtract, read, and write. These basic skills are necessary in order to function in our society and work force in the United States. As we all know each child learns differently, some learn faster than others and some slower than others. Our public schools have become overcrowded and we do not have enough teachers to fit the needs of each student. Some students get left behind and are not learning the skills needed to move on to the next level. What these students are not learning they can learn in higher education such as a college or university. In this report, I would like to express the importance of a higher education. I will use the works of John Henry Newman, Jon Spayde and Mike Rose, all three writers believe in having an educated society. Our students’ needs are changing, there are a growing number of immigrants with children coming to the United States from all over the world. They bring with them the language and culture of their country. The age in which they arrive to the United States determines how well they learn English and what skills they will need to acquire to become productive in our society. The task of teaching our children the basic skills is becoming harder and harder each day, making it harder for our education system to achieve their goals. There are a high number of students graduating from high school who does not have the skills needed to meet the needs of the work force in our society. A higher level of learning is needed to make our society literate.
In an age of rapid change due to so many technology and innovative advances, a revolutionary change in the educational system is as vital as what our next energy source is. Education is the most powerful wealth in the world and it demands more attention, and where better to start with than out youth. The school system will soon go out of date due to the information highway and information availability if there isn?t a dramatic change in the way things are run in our domestic institutional facilities. The reason why college was such a success in the 20th century was because books were all of a sudden available to students on university campus. Now with internet, a student could specialize their profession solely with the computer with the click of a button. Something needs to be done to smoothen the rigid gaps and cracks in the school system before the technological pace at which we are advancing decides to bring the whole thing down.
The idea of education has been a big part of each and every culture on earth. However, as we all know, there are many questions on what it means to be educated in the form of higher education: questions we, as students, must face sooner or later. Here I am, my junior year in college. In a couple of years, I will be either prolonging my education or out in the real world trying to make a living. I must ask myself these questions: What is the purpose of my higher education? What exactly am I learning? Is the education I am receiving here at the University of Arkansas going to be good enough for a future employer? If I am educated does that mean I am trained to do only one thing? Am I one-dimensional?
