Organization Design
The organization design, sometimes mistakenly identified as an organization's structure, is in fact the process of aligning an organization's structure with its mission (Mind Tools, 2010). By understanding connections between tasks, workflow, authority, and responsibility an organization design is developed that supports the company’s overall goals and objectives. Aspects or concepts of organization design are important tools used to bind the staff and the mission of the organization and as organizations grow or change we can readily identify the requirement for concepts to change as well. A bad organizational design regardless of having the best leaders, a great mission, and an outstanding staff will result in poor performance and under productivity of the company however a good design enhances productivity, encourages communication and innovation, and leads to accomplishment of the goals and objectives of the company.
Flat versus Tall Organization
The first of five aspects in an organization design are flat and tall organizations. Flat organization structures have a larger number of staff reporting to each manager. This structure does not allow for managers to closely supervise staff, allowing the staff greater freedom of action. Carpenter et al. (2009) suggests movement towards 'flatter' organizations that are more democratic and innovative seem to be a trend in business. Flat structures consist of only a few layers of management where tall structures have several layers of management between frontline employees and top executive levels. Open policies, active communication and true sense of belonging translate into a distinctive corporate structure that inspires good nature, teamwork and the bloodline of Googlers, INNOVATION. People love to work at Google, but not just because of flexible work time, bonuses, on site doctor, free lunches, yoga, wine tasting, meditation, etc… they love the challenge of trying to reach an impossible goal and have fun doing it.
In all of the above initiatives used by Google we see the positive aspects of good organization design. Trust, innovation, encouraging creativity, enhancing skills, pride and a sense of job satisfaction the list goes on and these pieces, concepts of organization design, bring Google’s organizational structure and its mission together in a positive way making this organization a success.
Top-level managers in bureaucratic organizational structures exercise a great deal of control over organizational strategy decisions, which is ideal for business owners with a command and control style. As for the disadvantages, bureaucratic structures can discourage creativity and innovation throughout the organization. Flexible work time, bonuses, and free lunches are not the only reasons people love to work at Google in addition to the perks, they are constantly challenged to reach new impossible goals and to have fun doing it.
Motivation is a key factor in any successful company. Motivated employees tend to work more focused and with less pressure. Google is a company that believes that motivated employees work better.
The Foodcorp is a big organization of more than twenty thousand employees. The structure should help the organization achieved established goals and objectives. Therefore, the appropriate structural design is very crucial. The performance and the efficiency of the organization can be enhanced through specialization and appropriate division of labor. Foodcorp used a matrix structure but the management style of Foodcorp seemed to be a one boss arrangement. Information and decisions directly comes from the top. As we can see from the chart, group members report and communicate primarily with president. In my opinion, this style will work best in a simple organization, but not for a big organization like Foodcorp. INTRODUCTION The Google company has engaged the controlling location and position in its industry since the launch due to its unique product which is a result of its unparalleled working location. Google has moved out on to achieve the largest share of online search engines as it affords its users with a product that is difficult to find even though there are a lot of challenges. By analyzing and examining the internal and external environment of the company, it is obvious that Google company is running an efficient machine, giving attention to the most of its customers and it ensures that it offers a quick and reliable product to its customers. The leaders of Google have well understood the means to make Google’s company different to the other companies. They established since the beginning an original way of work, controlling the recruitment of the new members, and imposing their vision on the employees.
Organizational structure is one of the three key organizational assets that could contribute to the effectiveness of operations of any organization (Zheng, Yan and Mclean 2009) It is joined together by different flows of information, decision processes, hierarchy of authority, specialization and working materials. (Enz 2009; Mintzberg 1980) Furthermore, it also determines the operating workflow, control of information, decision-making in the organization and the line authority (Mintzberg 1980). The facets of the organizational structure, the relationships that exist within it, and how the business processes (Bititci et al 2011) are controlled, determine the managerial style that should be utilized in addition to the strategies the organization could implement. Going further, a company’s organizational design and the parts that constitute it are seen as a contributing factor to superior performance, which ultimately provide an organization with competitive advantage over its competitors. The Different Ways Organizations Can Be Structured and Operated There are four major ways a company - organization can be structured and operate. P.C.G (o) Ltd I would dare say that is structured and operates with the functional structure. In order to make it clear and understandable I am analyzing here below the four ways that organizations can structure and operate. We will observe that all four structures have there advantages and disadvantages. Most organizations fall under one of three organizational designs: simple structure, bureaucracy and matrix structure. The organizational design of a company suggests who makes executive decisions and how they are enforced. Its persistence and incredible energy are definably the keys of success. The first model created inside the company was focusing on the users, and the rest will be followed achieved. Also, the company figured out that being great at one thing was going to be the right path to follow. Plus, especially when dealing with technology, being able to provide a fast service was going to gain numerous customers. Moreover, Google’s model was based on democracy and ethical behavior. It is not necessary to become evil in order to be successful. Information is precious and a company like Google is always in need of information. There is plenty of information out there waiting to be found, and it only needs someone to look in the right place. Dressing like a professional does not make a person one.
