Organic Hair Dyes
Organic dyes in hair products and cosmetics have been used throughout history for many aspects of culture and art. Today organic dyes are used in the process of hair dying and colouring where many aspects of the organic molecule are taken into account. Some dyes are permanent where they stay until the hair falls out, where some dyes can be washed away due to their binding process into the hair1. Certain dyes have their own way of being set into hair fibres and easier ways to set these are being researched. Hair dyes have been used throughout history and have been remarkably improved on, many new colours and processes have been made and many issues have come with them.
Hair dyes have been used throughout history and started out in very simple ways. Around 3150BC ancient Egyptians were one of the first to start using dyes in hair.2 From a plant called “Henna” they obtained the leaves and mashed them in mildly acidic conditions.3 When the leaves are mashed in these conditions the leaves release a molecule called lawsone.3 This molecule is the organic molecule responsible for the brownish red colour and is the dye acquired from this mixture. With small amounts of the molecule mixed with various other compounds, oranges can even be created. Mashed henna also incorporated with para-phenylenediamine (PPD) to give a dark black red colour. 3 This molecule will not stay in the hair unless it is somehow oxidized once in the hair fibres but was not discovered until the 1900s. It is speculated that the ancient Egyptians used slaked lime and water with lead oxide to make a paste where it was then rubbed into the hair for a long period of time.2 The slaked lime and water solution was very high in alkali metals,...

The first to use native dye plants in the United States were the Native Americans. Their culture was totally dependent on what the land produced. This is reflected in the wealth of information Native Americans possessed about useful plants, from medicinal to ceremonial and dye plants. This is reflected in the types of houses they built and the names of places (often after the plants that grew there). Early European colonists foolishly ignored the wisdom of the Native Americans and modern Americans are not much wiser. Americans need to learn about the plants and animals in our own country and how they can be useful to mankind. Instead of bringing non-adapted species of Europe to North America we need to learn what native adapted species can fulfill our needs and wants (Gilmore 1977). For example, we spend thousands of dollars feeding, sheltering, and caring for European cattle when we have native bovines, bison which are naturally adapted to the climate and environment. Melvin Randolph Gilmore sums this idea up well in the following quote:
PURPOSE: The purpose of the experiment is to determine the specific types of pigments found in water-soluble marker pens by using paper chromatography and water as a solvent.
Napoleon must also be aware of the new emerging trend and preference of natural cosmetic products that have recently taken 4-7% of the cosmetics industry in Canada in the past couple of years. The shift towards natural ingredients within cosmetics that contain vitamins and properties such as palmetto oil and calendula has been due to the increased health benefits, Growing health awareness and praise from consumers and beauty experts, generating curiosity for such cosmetics who share their positive reviews and recommendations. And most recently, this is increasingly occurring online on websites such as BlogSpot and YouTube.
Apply a leather preparer to eliminate the finish of the leather. This will allow the dye to be properly absorbed by the leather.

By understanding these cultures and the role henna has and/or continues Egyptians mummies have been found with stained hair and nails, the reddish brown tones of henna. The Egyptians were convinced that body art smoothed the journey ahead. Henna was believed to have originated in Persia. Marilyn Cvitanic Ph.D. explains, “It grew extensively in Egypt and was carried to India where it was used since at least 700 AD for decorating hands and feet.” (http://www.habiba.org/culture.html, Paragraph 2).

According to 10 Weird and Wacky Beauty Facts by Andrea Lavinthal, in ancient Greece, the most sought-after hair color was blond. Not many Greeks were naturally blond, so light hair was probably perceived as beautiful because it was so exotic. Women would lighten their hair using plant extracts or arsenic. They also washed their locks with a mixture of ashes, olive oil, and water. She also explained how “it was a shame that extension weren’t available during the Heian period when a Japanese woman’s beauty was judges by the length of her hair, since the ideal was considered almost two feet longer than her waist. We’re assuming that ponytails were a popular hairstyle back then.” There are many other crazy facts about beauty facts like Vaseline makes your eyelashes grow and can take off makeup, or if your finger nails are discolored from using dark polish, use a slice of lemon on them and they will regain their color (The beauty magazine, Roselyn Miller, pg. 67). Going into the field of Cosmetology helps you express yourself and it brings out your inner creativity. That is one of the many reason I love this line of work, because when I do hair it lets me express myself while creating a hairstyle of my own. The first time I started doing hair was when I was about 10 or 11, I was a natural! I want to be able to know my clients and exactly what will look right on my clients and read people, so I would know what they do like just by talking to them. I need to learn to separate family from business. I do know some things about this field I before this assignment that cosmetology is not just about doing hair, it’s also about learning about the Skin; Doing make up, eye lashes, etc. You also learn about nails; doing a...
We all know that cosmetics existed thousands of years ago. Cleopatra used a heavy arsenal of beauty aids to help her shake the foundations of the Roman Empire. Yes, cosmetics and perfumes have a long history, but the consumer industry we live in is relatively recent, a creation of the decades 1890 through 1920. The products hawked in the 19th Century by druggists, perfumers, barbers, physicians, and a colorful assortment of other enterprising individuals were primitive by our standards. Certainly, active ingredients were used with abandon, notably arsenic, lead, and mercury. These were products that really made visible differences, and the consumer was well-advised to be wary of the majority of these mysterious concoctions.
Hair weaving dates back as far as Ancient Egypt and throughout history. Egyptians adored a good hair weave. It was considered a form of self-expression and common practice for them to trim their hair and create dazzling wig out of it. The men on occasion wore more dashing styles of wigs than the women. Women more so used weaving methods because of their diminishing hair. This practice is still used today for men and women who suffer from different types of hair loss.
Columbus brought many items from the New World to his community and rubber was one of them. Rubber is made from a polymer of a molecule which can be identified as isoprene. Isoprene has many different types of properties and is considered to be an organic compound. Rubber has taken a big step in the commercial industry and good profit is made from it because we use the product a lot. In chapter 9 is mainly about dyes and how it plays a significant role in our everyday lives. Dyes are considered to be an organic compound. Dyes were first found in plants. One of the earliest uses of dyes was to dye clothing but since the pigment wasn’t strong the dye didn’t last much. As I said earlier dyes could be found in plants. The most color dye that was found in plants was yellow and red. Depending on how the molecule was formed it decided was dye the color was. With dyes being discovered in plants the commercial industry was earning money. Depending on the color you decided to buy it was either expensive or cheap. The prices were taken by how rare the dye was found. For example, Indigo was a rare dye so it was way more expensive than a yellow or red
When approaching the topic of hair chemistry, one may think about the question, where does hair come from? Saclike holes called follicles are located all over the human body. At the bottom of these follicles are a cluster of papilla responsible for the growth of hair. As the papilla, otherwise known as hair bulbs reproduce to make new hair cells, the old ones are pushed up towards the surface of the skin causing the hair to grow longer. This may seem like a simple concept to grasp. However, the process of hair growth is a little more in depth.
When determining whether a food colorant is safe to be used as a food additive, tests must be performed to determine its toxicological effects. Many food colorants have been shown to induce certain diseases and carcinogenic or allergic reactions in animals and humans. By the 1960s, experiments had displayed results that initiated regulations that restricted the use of these colorants (Vargas & Lopez, 2003). However, some natural colorants, which are those pigments retrieved from living organisms, are believed to have fewer adverse effects on consumer health and have fewer restrictions on their usage than synthetic colorants,...
