The assessment portfolio is used for summative evaluation of students' mastery of fundamental curriculum outcomes. A portfolio includes a collection the student’s work that reflects their effort, progress and achievement. Thus, a portfolio should contain students' best completed work which is selected from the student’s collection of work by both the student and the teacher. The assessment portfolio is particularly compatible with audio-visual productions such as photographs, videotapes, and electronic records of students' works. The portfolio should also contain a written analysis and reflections by the student after the selection of the works to be included in the portfolio.
Process of portfolio analysis
1. Setting assessment purpose
The most important step of portfolio analysis is setting up the objective of the portfolio analysis. Having a clear purpose of the portfolio offers focus and a sense of direction for the assessment process. The purpose of the portfolio will be based on issue such as the aspect of language learning to be used for assessment, the reason for making the portfolio, the users of the portfolio among others.
2. Identification of instructional Objectives
The next step is to identify the instructional Objectives and goals which have been set for students to achieve by the end of a specified period and the accomplishment of the area indicated by the assessment purpose. The instructional goals and objectives focus on the specific intended achievements of the program. Progress indicators should be developed based on the Standards.
3. Matching of Tasks to Objectives

As we have discussed herein, the portfolio method of assessment has become extensively used in educational settings for assessment of students’ performance and measuring progress of the students as they the process of learning or adjustment as it transpires. As opposed to other assessment methods like test scores, Portfolios include practical descriptions, examples and illustrations of what the student is going through in and experiencing. This enables the educators to measure the progress of the students. Portfolio assessment is efficient in measurement of complex constructs as well as individualized assessment.
