Technology is advancing every field of science in unimaginable ways. Computers alone have opened up countless job and schooling opportunities that are continually growing by the day. Doctors an scientists in the medical world are using computers for everything from keeping patient files on hand at all times, to better understanding the human brain. (Friedman, and Koffman 2) Technology can make everyday life infinitely easier. Nearly every company is embracing technology, like computers, as it simplifies their day to day activities. Technology has also advanced education, allowing students to take entire college courses in the comfort of their living room, as well as enable students of all ages to further their knowledge by using a search engine. Even during early childhood education, technology can work wonders. Computers are often looked down upon being used in early childhood, as children are more likely to watch a movie instead of reading the text for themselves. People do not get, “the written word along with all of its attendant pleasures.” (Gelernter 278) I challenge that statement, and say that teachers simply have not found adequate ways to use the computer. For example, teachers can find interactive programs online to aid in teaching otherwise unacceptable subjects. A simple program with scalpels and tweezers will enable a child to play veterinarian for the day and operate on a frog in complete safety. Simple activities like this have multiple aspects of development that are necessary for a child to grow into a well rounded individual. Children will have fun, while doing the most important thing for their developing mind, learning. David Gelernter author of the essay, “Unplugged: The Myth of Computers in the Classroom,” used some rhetorical appeals but not many in his essay, whilst trying to logically persuade his audience that computers could be utilized in the classroom, but under certain stipulations. Gelernter has great credibility for speaking on education and technology, as he is a professor of computer science at Yale University, so he more than anyone should know the outcomes of using a computer as a tool while teaching. However, when it comes to technology a lot of older generations usually are pretty biased when discussing technologies advancements, Gelernter still had some very good points! Using computers while teaching our young children can be useful but with strict moderations; when, where, and why, because if not heavily monitored, computers could be extremely detrimental to the learning experience and processes for many students.
In today’s society, we are overwhelmed with technology. Technology is changing everyday, and will forever be a staple in our lives. The effect that technology has on our children has brought some concerns and some praise. Children these days have no choice but to somehow be influenced by the ever growing technology in our society.
