Change - the one constant in life. I can still remember the day my older sister left for college. It was 2:30 in the morning, she woke me up to say goodbye and I responded with a weak, “bye” and “I love you” because I was way too tired to think straight. However that morning on the way to school it dawned on me, my sister is gone. She left to go across the country and she was going to be two thousand miles away. Suddenly and silently, tears ran down my face. Now more than ever I realized how close our bond was and how dramatically my life was about to change. One would not think the effect of an older sister moving away from home would have a large emotional and physical impact, but when two sisters have a close bond the younger sister’s life will change dramatically when the older sister leaves for college. When two children are brought up by the same parent in the same environment, one might logically conclude that these children will be very similar, or at least have comparable qualities. In Alice Walker's "Everyday Use," however, this is not the case. The only thing Maggie and Dee share in common is the fact that they were both raised by the same woman in the same home. They differ in appearance, personality, and ideas that concern the family artifacts.

June-May protests saying “They’ll think I’m responsible, that she died because I didn’t appreciate her,” (Tan 149). She believes that her sisters will hate her when she shows up without their mother and has to announce her death. As a result, Auntie Lindo writes back announcing the passing of the mother and announces that instead their sister, June-May, will be coming. Like the two previous stories, The Sisters and An Encounter, Araby is about a somewhat introverted boy fumbling toward adulthood with little in the way of guidance from family or community. The truants in An Encounter managed A young boy who is similar in age and temperament to those in “The Sisters” and “An Encounter” develops a crush on Mangan’s sister, a girl who lives across the street. One evening she asks him if he plans to go to a bazaar (a fair organized, probably by a church, to raise money for charity) called Araby. The girl will be away on a retreat when the bazaar is held and therefore unable to attend. The boy promises that if he goes he will bring her something from Araby.
There’s an event in everyone's life that changes you, whether it be a simple hello or a death in the family. Tragically, mine begins with my mother marrying her second husband. The lessons I learned from this man shaped me into the person I am today. I came from a bad situation and he took my family in and and showed me that not every man is the same. Perseverance, the ability to forgive, and willingness to change your life for the better are just some of the things he taught me.
