Recommended: The tragic hero of Sophocles, King Oedipus

Oedipus Rex: A Movie Review Oedipus Rex is first of the trilogy about the life of Oedipus and his children, written by Sophocles. It tells about the tragic story of a baby who was abandoned in a field with the consent of his parents in order to escape the dreadful prophesy about him killing his own father and marrying his own mother. However, the servant who was supposed to leave the child in the field brought him to a shepherd who in turn gave the baby to the childless king and queen of Corinth. Therefore, without the knowledge of his parents, the child grew up to be a fine young man. When he grew older, the child learned that the parents he knew were not his real parents. Wanting to find the truth, he sought the counsel of an oracle who did not give the grown child an answer to his question but prophesied that he will kill his father and marry his mother. Afraid, the young man left his country only to bring the prophecies to him and his father into reality. However, it was years later, when he already sired four children to his own mother, that the story unfolded and Oedipus learn...

Therefore, the king and queen instruct a servant to leave him on a mountain to die. Oedipus’s feet were pierced and pinned together, but the servant did not leave him to die. They raised Oedipus as their own so and named him Oedipus for “swollen foot” (Meyer 1124).     In order to understand much of the foreshadowing in the play, should keep in mind who the audience Sophocles was presenting his play to. The play was originally preformed in front of the Greeks around 400 B.C. Oedipus Rex is based off the Greek legend of Oedipus, a story that the audience of the play watching Oedipus Rex, would have been familiar with. When the reversal, or time Oedipus realizes that he has killed his father and married his mother, is foreshadowed, it created a sense of dramatic irony, as the audience knows that this reversal will happen, and are reminded of it, but the characters in the play remain oblivious to it. Many of the symbols and literary aspects of the play foreshadow this reversal, so without knowing the legend of Oedipus many of the symbols in Oedipus Rex would be lost.
