My career goal is to help youth find a career path that they love and want to pursue for a lifetime. I believe that a Master of Arts in Counseling would help me to facilitate this goal. A person’s career is such a part of an individual’s identity, in my opinion; it should be commonplace for individuals to begin exploring career paths in early childhood. A degree in Counseling with a School emphasis would allow me to work in the school system to help students begin to explore their employable interests.
I choose Regent to continue my education after exploring graduate schools in my senior year of college. I spoke with several students that were in CACREP accredited programs. Almost every student and professional that I spoke to agreed that there was something special about Regent students. Regent offered the courses that I was interested in while allowing a spiritual outlet. I’m very interested in attending a university that offers worship service. As a perspective student that has attended both Christian schools and secular school, I’m eager to return to the Christian setting.
My current job, my academic self reflection, and my passion for helping youth to find their employment vision prepares me to be successful in the Master of Arts in Counseling program. I did very well once I identified the right program for me in undergraduate school. In my last few semesters of undergraduate school I developed strong study habits and even finished my last semester earning Dean’s List.

I have spent 3 years researching both myself and a numerous other programs. The program that I found to be the best fit for me is the Master of Arts in Counseling program with Regent University. I have explored this program by not only reading the various course descriptions, but also by meeting with the faculty and sitting in on a conference lecture presented by the opportunity during the Southern Association for College Student Affairs Conference. One of my visions as a psychology practitioner scholar is becoming a clinical counselor. My purpose in psychology is to help people understand their life in a clear distinct way. I specifically want to target children and, help them grow and be more than they have the potential to be. I want to focus on the child development of children based on their environment. I want to be able understand children react the way they do in certain situations. Children have a way of not being able to express themselves fully so being able to help them understand their emotions.
Before applying to Capella University, I researched the counseling program and the benefits I would have in enrolling in this program. What I found was that the school counseling program is accredited (CACREP) which means the university has taken the time and the means to make sure the program and the standards are professionally stable. I have a masters in Elementary Education, and I am seeking a second in the school counseling field. With my experience; my compassion for children and people and an opportunity to seek a new field of study, I hope Capella University will allow me to continue my newly challenging educational journey towards achieving my goal in becoming a School Guidance Counselor.
Over the next two years, I will work towards completing 3,000 hours of post licensure internship while continuing my education in a doctoral program. After completing the doctoral program, I would like to hold dual licensure as a professional counselor and psychologist. In the next 10 years, I would like to work at the collegiate level as an educator in psychology and/or counseling. My ultimate career goal is to operate a program for at risk men and women ages 18 to 25. The program I hope to create will focus on the transition to independence process (TIP) model. My focus will be to provide psychological services for young people who are aging out of foster care, have a juvenile record, or are teen parents. Currently I am studying for my psychology degree and planning on finishing with my bachelors’ degree in 2014, I have faced few challenges with my plans so far because I feel as though I have prepared myself well for the future. I am a in the psychology club and I participate in psychology experiments at school. I want to utilize all that I can while I am in school to become the best at what I do. Where I work I call alumni of my college and ask them for donations, before I ask them I have to gain their trust and that is also the basis for any counselor patient relationship.
Psychology is my number one career field choice. In many ways, it also reflects every other career choice that I have. Teachers lead our young toward successful lives. Government workers help to push policies that improve processes for their people. And professional athletes commit their live to the vast study of their sport and practice to master the skills needed to thrive and succeed. As a psychologist, I can see myself implementing all three of these ideas. I want to master all the skills of psychological diagnosis, improve on many of the processes of the practice, and be able to successfully educate individuals to the point that they feel a sense of empowerment.
My specialization is to work as a therapist in a prison setting and provide social change to them and society. This all started to interest me is when I reflect on what I had learned through my own struggle in life. It then got me thinking about working with clients who have been misdiagnosed. I began so engrossed in every aspect of it that I never wanted class to end. It was from then on that I decided to pursue my B.A. in psychology. As an undergraduate, at Western Michigan University, my studies were in psychology. Having previously worked with both children in schools and elders in nursing homes, I wanted to expand my resume when I chose my field work. I was able to complete my hours at Gryphon Place in Kalamazoo. This is a conflict and crisis center where I specialized in crisis intervention and suicide prevention. This experience gave me a feeling of accomplishment and pride in knowing that I was not only helping others but also saving lives. Lawrence gave a great example of what you can do with your psychology degree, whatever you want to do within that field, never give up and push toward your goals as a counseling psychology, social psychology, or even a Cognitive Neuropsychology. While doing the interview with Lawrence, he really does appreciate his job and the studies he had done changed him to have a better view of becoming a counseling psychology. Counseling psychology is the school of thought that I identify with the most. As I transition to graduate school and begin a social work program, my ultimate goal is to become an independent counselor.
