Ever since my mother was a young girl my grandmother, her mother, always prepared healthy, nutritional meals. Because of my grandmother, my mother learned a great amount of information on how to maintain a healthy diet. For the reason of my mother’s learning, from the time when I was a young girl my family has always had an interest in nutrition and maintaining a healthy diet. My parents always cook nutritional meals, being cautious of what ingredients they were placing into foods. Throughout the years, I learned what healthy food sources to consume and what not to. Learning about being a healthy eater encouraged me to want to help others maintain a healthy diet; therefore I want to become a nutritionist.
“Nutritionists have a healthy regard for food and its life-sustaining properties.” (“Career”). Nutritionist’s goal is to prevent and treat illness through a proper diet. They evaluate the diets of patients and clients suffering from medical disorders; such as hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. They encourage nutritional eating habits for communities, schools, hospitals, prisons, clinics, and nursing homes. “Nutritionists specialize in one of three areas of practice: clinical, community, or administrative.” (“Career”). A clinical nutritionist is a type of nutritionist that serve the needs of clients who are institutional. In nursing homes, hospitals, retirement communities, day care centers, and prisons; they develop and maintain nutritional programs. Nutritionist must refer to a doctor or a health professionals before suggesting any dietary program. Community nutritionist are another type of nutritionist. These nutritionist are an essential part of health clinics, clubs, agencies, and HMOs. To help people have a better diet, ...

As a young student in high school, I’ve become interested to excel in the field of nutrition and become a nutritionist after I complete the requirements. A nutritionist helps everyone from families, large groups, and even hospitals and cafeteria’s to make healthy diets. Nutrition has been around ever since 400 B.C. and has grown to bigger and better things. I want to help people find out the secrete to a healthy diet and becoming a nutritionist will help me reach my goal.
Michael Pollan, an American author, journalist, activist, and professor of journalism at the UC Berkeley Graduate School of Journalism (Michael Pollan), writes in his book In Defense of Food, the dangers of nutritionism and how to escape the Western diet and subsequently most of the chronic diseases the diet imparts. In the chapter “Nutritionism Defined” Pollan defines the term nutritionism. Pollan’s main assertion being how the ideology of nutritionism defines food as the sum of its nutrients, and from this viewpoint Pollan goes on to write how nutritionism divides food into two categories, with each macronutrient divided against each other as either bad or good nutrients, in a bid for focus of our food fears and enthusiasms. Finally, Pollan concludes that with the relentless focus nutritionism places on nutrients and their interplay distinctions between foods become irrelevant and abandoned.
Through this, she has become aware of the increasing number of people trying to find solutions to their nutrition-related issues. She believes that as someone who is studying nutrition she has a “responsibility to inform people on recommendations and information based on current research rather than just mere opinion and what sources can be counted as reliable”. Whenever Keyla tells other people that she is studying nutrition they usually ask her for recommendations on how to eat healthier. Keyla says she takes these types of opportunities to “inform these individuals the best that I can and clarify any myths or trends that the general public believes but is not based on research.” This makes her realize that people are in great need of accurate health related information because they have a concern for their own general health, and also for the health of their family and
Nutritionism is the ideology that the nutritional value of a food is the sum of all its individual nutrients, vitamins, and other components. In the book, “In Defense of Food” by Michael Pollan, he critiques scientists and government recommendations about their nutritional advice. Pollan presents a strong case pointing out the many flaws and problems that have risen over the years of following scientific studies and government related warnings on the proper amount of nutrients needed for a healthy diet. Pollan’s main point is introducing science into our food system has had more of a negative impact than a positive one, we should go back to eating more of a traditional diet. I believe food science has given us
According to Pollan, the dietary advice made by nutritionists deprives us from the pleasure of eating, expressing our identity, and connecting to our family
Since 1916, the United States Department of Agriculture (the government agency responsible for all U.S. policy regarding agriculture, food, and farming) has revised their recommendations several times. Unfortunately, money talks and the USDA’s recommendations are based on outdated science and are influenced by people with business interest. Even so, its recommendations are considered almost “holy” by physicians, nutritionists, and dieters, but in reality, they are the root cause of the problem. A single visit to our local public school cafeteria and it will become clear that they do not have the best interests of the children at heart. What they are feeding our innocent children is preposterous. Doctors, the people we trust and expect to be “the experts”, do not know much about the subject of nutrition. A vast majority of medical schools in the U.S. require just 25-30 hours or less of nutrition training, and some do not require at all. So doctors must rely on the ...
Proper nutrition is important in maintaining a long and healthy life. Most Americans are rushed due to their busy work schedules, and do not take the time to plan their diets properly. Like me, most Americans are unaware of the importance of eating a healthy diet and consume too many foods without the proper nutrients. Throughout my life I have been fortunate. I have not had any major health problems, and have been able to consume most foods without having to worry about gaining weight. These last two years, however, I started to gain weight and have become concerned with my diet. Changing my poor eating habits has been difficult for me, however, having this assignment has taught me that it is not as difficult as I previously imagined.
My cultural background will be a great contribution to the Washington State University Coordinated Dietetics Program. Being raised in a Malasia, having visited different countries, and now living in the United States, I have experienced the similarities and differences among many diverse cultural groups and nutritional diets. This broad exposure to different cultures allowed me to relate to different types of people by understanding their ways and beliefs, a quality that will help me work well with other students and people. For example, many Malasians will eat something that is unhealthy in nutritional standards and has no benefits to the body. However, they will continue to consume it because it is common in their culture. I would like to teach Malasian people to look at food from a cultural and nutritional angle to be more healthful.
“As I work every day”, she started, “even though this is a job that I do in a repetitive fashion, I am moved every time by the fact that I can treat and improve people’s lives through food: what we might sometimes care less.” “I am able to help people with what they choose to eat, which in the end will help them walk the paths of healthy lives. And this is the driving force that strengthens my life as well.” And she added, “But compared to the amount and intensity of education one has to attain in becoming a dietitian, I don’t think this profession gets paid enough.” “And I devote plethora of my time in counseling my patients to reshape their nutritional practices. But I realized that these practices are really tough to break. This is when the negative aspects of being a dietitian come into

One of the reason’s why I felt my nutrition needed to changes is because nutrition is a huge part of a healthy lifestyle, the way that we eat and what foods we consume can have a huge impact on our everyday lives. Nutrition plays a huge role in multiple facets of a person’s life energy, health, skin, weight, confidence, and more making having a good control on your eating habits extremely important. How we eat over the years and what foods we routinely choose to eat can eventually have a lasting effect on use and what we consider to be most appealing and appetizing at any given moment. Having these craving and routine habits makes eating, diet, and nutrition both a behavior and a lifestyle choice that can be changed over time with help from the theories learned in this class.
To become a dietitian or a nutritionist, I need to become an expert in nutrition. Nutritionists and dietitians help people improve their lives by advising them in the proper nutrition for their specific health needs. Dietitians and nutritionists also help with food preparation in healthcare settings and even schools. (Truity, 2017) Dietitians and nutritionists also need to think about the outcomes of the food plans they are giving to clients or patients to make sure they are giving them the right guidance. By studying the outcomes of what advise they have given to patients or clients, they can better themselves and their research to keep up with new trends in nutrition. This is very important because the information out there about nutrition
“Those who have no time for healthy eating will sooner or later have to find time for illness” - Edward Stanley. In this quote the author was saying that eating right is not just about maintaining a healthy weight; it affects your total state of well-being. Having poor lifestyle habits can cause people to become more susceptible of a disease in their near future. These diseases can be prevented by eating right. Most people would think that a dietitian's main task in their job force is to put people on a steady diet to enhance their health. This is somewhat on the right track but at the same time it is not. Dietitians are experts in food and nutrition, they help promote healthy eating habits, and develop diets for people.
Public health dietitians combine their scientific knowledge of food and nutrition with public health to try to reduce the rates of obesity and diabetes in NZ, by improving diet and nutrition. Their work, which includes community initiatives to promote better nutrition, therefore improves the health outcomes in NZ with respect to diet related diseases (Howatson & Wall, 2014). They can also help reduce the financial strain obesity and type 2 diabetes have on the health care system. Prevention is often cheaper than treatments. Preventing obesity and its related diseases would be much easier and more cost-effective than to treat the chronic long term illnesses related to obesity (Ministry Of Health, 2001). Furthermore, international literature on dietetics have also shown that dietitians working in public health can contribute positively to
In everyday life not many people would really think about the reason why we eat food. Driven by natural instinct of hunger and appetite it seems obvious that we eat to keep ourselves alive. Hunger and poor nutrition are problems of millions people causing disabilities and death. Experienced people emphasize that the food what we eat and how do we feel is evenly balanced. It means that the right amount of nutrients should have a positive effect on our health.
Public dieticians and public nutritionists share many of the same roles within a community with both focusing on the health and well being of a population. They work to make people aware of healthy food choices and lifestyles by sending clear and constant messages into the community (Ministry of Health, 2007). In order for this to happen public dieticians/nutritionists work to reduce nutritional misinformation published by the media. They also advise other health professionals such as General Practitioners to ensure they are sending the correct nutritional messages to their patients (Ministry of Health, 2007). Public dieticians/nutritionists treat and educate individuals and small groups to prevent health problems at a personal level. However their main focus is that of populations and so they plan community-based campaigns to target larger groups of people and work to change health and nutrition policies to prevent large onsets of dis-ease. Winterfeldt, Bogle & Ebro, 2013). They do this by working in schools to educate the youth and by holding conferences and educational talks for adults in the wider community (Ministry of Health, 2007).
