Hospital, only one word but somehow is thought of in a bad connotation. No one wants to be in the hospital and no one has a great time, however there are people who can make your stay better. Nurses can make your stay comfortable and relaxed or painful and scary. Having a caring nurse can make your experience exceptional while having an awful nurse can make everything worse. Clinical is where nursing students can practice as nurses in a specific area under the supervision of a licensed nurse. Throughout the summer and fall, Penn’s nursing program has supported my growth both professionally and personally. Initially, N103 (Psychological and Social Diversity in Health and Wellness) piqued my interest because I was able to give words to something I always knew – socioeconomic and environmental factors heavily influence health. As an individual committed to supporting the wellbeing of others, I hope to strengthen the health of populations through clinical care, research and policy addressing these social determinants of health. Later, my N720 (Nursing of Children - Theory I: Child and Family Development), N215 (Nursing of Women and Infants), and N225 (Pediatric Nursing) classes were notable in that through these classes I was able to fill the dual role of providing family teaching and patient care. Consistently, though, I find myself pulled towards discussions of patients' psychosocial and discharge care needs – typically roles more closely aligned with primary care. The collaboration began with two nursing faculty members discussing the need for increased simulation due to clinical site shortage. These faculty members called a meeting with other faculty members who co-teach the third semester course. The five faculty members agreed there is a need for an increase in the use of simulation in the course due to continued difficulty in finding quality clinical placement for the students. The third semester faculty brought the proposal to the director of the nursing program. The director agreed with the proposal and reported a concern with the statewide curriculum this fall as there was an expectation of increased challenges with clinical placements. These challenges are the result of students having multiple simultaneous clinical placements. Clinical placements allow student nurses to put theory into practice with real patients and actual clinical situations. Every placement will challenge student, improve communication skills, build own knowledge and foster own reflective practice. It is one of the most interesting and exciting aspects of training to be a nurse. I personally believe that, students must be responsible for their own learning opportunities and understand the outcomes they need to achieve on placement, discussing any queries with their clinical supervisor. I always look for learning opportunities. I approach my clinical supervisor for her guidance to perform any new skills fall into my scope of practice.
I believe placing student nurses in the clinical setting is vital in becoming competent nurses. Every experience the student experiences during their placement has an educative nature therefore, it is important for the students to take some time to reflect on these experiences. A specific situation that stood out to me from my clinical experience was that; I didn’t realize I had ignored the patient’s pain until I was later asked by the nurse if the patient was in any pain.
The article is entitled “The effect of clinical nursing instructors on student self-efficacy”. Clinical rotations can be a stressful experience for most students. I recall my own clinical experience with one clinical instructor that are made my clinical experience a living nightmare by telling me “You don’t have what it takes to be a nurse” and constantly being told I was too slow at the bedside or passing medications and then repeating the same course with another clinical instructor that was always praising me or giving me constructive feedback that helped me regain my self-efficacy to continue the program. This article suggest ways for the clinical instructor to help enhance a student’s self-efficacy. Characteristics identified that make up an effective clinical instructor include: 1) possessing certain interpersonal relationships such as being empathetic, motivational, understanding, available, respectful, and helping gain a student’s confidence; 2) positive feedback on evaluation can help inspire students to learn more and foster development of critical thinking; 3) an instructor’s ability to teach- the instructors need to guide students to the right answer or find a resource for them to get the correct answer and be able to coach a student through a new skill and encourage practice; 4) instructors need to possess competence- students are looking to the
