A person cultural, spiritual, personal values are influence by their world view and philosophies in nursing practice. Brought up in the island and arrive to United States at the age of sixteen under a catholic family who taught me to give it my best in everything that I do in life and how to treat people who are different than us. My inspiration and motivation as I grew up was to be a nurse like my mother. I have been ascribed with values, obligations to fulfill that are with me for the rest of my life. Integrity and responsibility are others values that contribute to my work view and philosophy of nursing. I am drawn to the profession because of the skills, compassion that I can offer. As a nurse, when caring for my patients I gave it my all, take responsibilities for everything that I do and say which has helped me achieve my goals and work harder. I also enjoyed being with people and had one of those personality types that leads to nurture people. Nurturing occur across life stages. Cambridge on line dictionary (2006) defines nurture as “to take care of, feed, protect someone or something and help them develop”. As a nurse I provide care to all type of patients and families whose cultures, traditions, languages, spirituals, backgrounds may differ from my, so I attempt to provide the same quality of care I would want if I was in their place. Due to the fact that we don’t understand the underlying value system of someone else culture, we interpret their behaviors as negative. I learned the value of respect from my parents and siblings through standing up for what I believe in when dispute occurred. ...t night about his patients whether it is an emergency or lack of understanding his orders, he would not return my phone calls which endanger the patient’s conditions. As a nurse I know that the obligations, the rules as well as the procedures that are required to follow when providing patient care. When my phone calls were not returned I called the intensivist doctor who came to assess the patient and give orders. I will informed the assistant nurse manager of the problem as well. I come across ethical dilemma that I handled as per my personal views or the way I think is right as long as it does not interfere with my patient’s values and that I comply to ethics rules and regulations.

Deontology is an ethical theory concerned with duties and rights. The founder of deontological ethics was a German philosopher named Immanuel Kant. Kant’s deontological perspective implies people are sensitive to moral duties that require or prohibit certain behaviors, irrespective of the consequences (Tanner, Medin, & Iliev, 2008). The main focus of deontology is duty: deontology is derived from the Greek word deon, meaning duty. A duty is morally mandated action, for instance, the duty never to lie and always to keep your word. Based on Kant, even when individuals do not want to act on duty they are ethically obligated to do so (Rich, 2008).

Before Nightingale, nurses were lower class citizens that were alcoholics or prostitutes with no to a little education. There are professional duties with becoming distinctly legitimate obligations if any law and policies are ruptured in between professional practice. Although nursing is universally practiced, not all nurses values and morals are the same. Nurses and nursing students are usually put in situations where they must operate within an ethical structure which is either unfamiliar to their cultural criterion or those of the patients for whom they are taking care of. The most prominent values and morals of nurses are based on human dignity and benevolence. Human dignity is the main component that branches off into other values under caring for health and well-being. Trust, integrity, autonomy, and privacy are one of the many sub-values that fall under human dignity. It is important for the nurses to respect and understand the culture and beliefs of the patient without being judgmental or confrontational. There are several professional values that a nurse must possess altruism, autonomy, human dignity, integrity, and social justices are among these. Altruism is being concerned for the well-being and welfare of others; this includes their patients and colleagues. Working in health care is an important job. People put their trust in us to do our very best to provide them with the absolute best care. Being entrusted with such responsibility requires nurses to conduct themselves both professionally and ethically. Nurses must adhere to the professional values of human dignity, integrity, autonomy, altruism, and social justice. It is these five values that guide us in our practice and as nurses we must promote and emulate these values. They play an important role in the quality of treatment and success of an organization and help us determine right from wrong.
Values, although tend to be stable, they can be changed or can be developed because values have cognitive, affective and behavioural components (Baillie & Black, 2015). Potter and Perry (2014) added that values influence behaviour basing on a conviction that a certain action is right depending on the given circumstances. Culture, society and personality were identified by Rokeach (1973, as cited in Baillie & Black, 2015) as key precedent of human values. Furthermore, as a person becomes more aware of and reflective about him/herself, he/she can consider to change his/her value set and will also result in modifying his/her attitudes and behaviour. By understanding one’s own personal values, he or she will become sensitive to the values of others. My core values and beliefs are honesty, caring, family, and lifelong learning, which I use every day in my life. The core of nursing is caring, knowledge, and integrity that focuses on the patient’s needs, healing, safety, and encouragement. Personal and professional beliefs overlap the driving force of nursing. The qualities of a good nurse are not or cannot be turned off and on, and are part of the person I am. We are just helping hands that are always striving to help others. I am not perfect. I am a human being and sometimes mistakes will be made, but I always try my best. If something goes wrong, I will examine the situation, and learn from it to make me a better nurse than I was before. I will monitor and reflect on my own actions to ensure that I am staying true to what I believe are the best nursing practices. When we find conflicts between our personal beliefs and those of the patient, we should uphold our personal and professional ethical standards. Defining what a nurse is varies from person to person. Some have described a nurse as a person who shows care to their patients while others say that nurses assist to regain the ill’s health back. There is no wrong answer in defining what a nurse is. Moreover, I believe that a nurse is one who treats their patients with the dignity and respect that they deserve, and assists them in promoting and preventing their health illness and lastly, enhancing their health to optimal status. Nursing is viewed as a human science because nurse must display a connection with each patient.
