Introduction Never in history has man had to worry about his existence or even the existence of humans because someone half a world away possessed the capability to end all life on earth. The threat to the human race is at risk each day in a world with nuclear weapons. There are several military revolutions throughout history, but the one that stimulated the greatest change ever in military warfare, is by far, nuclear weapons. They have proven to be the most devastating weapon ever in history, provided as a war deterrent for many, and have allowed for weak countries to become global powers. Nuclear weapons are not just one country’s problem; they are everyone’s. The ability to bring the world to end by one reckless individual is a possibility we all live with every day. Arguments Nuclear weapons are the largest casualty producing and most environmentally damaging weapon ever developed. Today’s scientists and engineers have access to computers, ease to physical materials, a greater abundance scientific knowledge, and organizations dedicated to developing weapon systems, but still today, nuclear weapons are the most powerful. The first nuclear bomb was developed by the United States and tested near Alamogordo, New Mexico on July 16, 1945. This would become the weapon of choice to end the war with Japan during WWII. On August 6, 1945 at 08:45 local, the first atomic bomb was released over the city of Hiroshima. The devastating results were over 70,000 killed instantly and 4.4 square miles of structures destroyed. Three days later, on August 9th, the second atomic bomb was dropped on Nagasaki with similar effects; over 40,000 dead instantly. In August of 1945, both of the only two nuclear bombs ever used in warfare were dropped on the Japanese cities of Nagasaki and Hiroshima. These two bombs shaped much of the world today.
By studying these shadows scientists pinpointed the exact detonation point of the bomb. The second atomic bomb was dropped just three days later on Nagasaki, Japan. 1/3 of the city was destroyed and 66,000 people were reported killed or injured. A memorial now marks the spot where the bomb exploded.
“Little Boy” and “Fat Man”, the world’s first two nuclear bombs were dropped in two major cities in Japan: Hiroshima and Nagasaki on the 6th and 9th of August 1945. Ten miles to the north, in the town of Pripyat, is the Chernobyl nuclear powerstation, site of the worst nuclear reactor disaster in history ("Chernobyl", Columbia Encyclopedia). To specify, on April 26, 1986, Unit Four of the Chernobyl nuclear reactor exploded in Ukraine, injuring human immune systems and the genetic structure of cells, contaminating soils and waterways. Nearly 7 tons of irradiated reactor fuel was released into the environment—roughly 340 million curies.
When looking at the aftermath of the atomic bomb in both Nagasaki and Hiroshima the devastation it caused is evident. The majority of the population in Japan could have never imagined such a catastrophic event. On August 6, 1945 and August 9, 1945 massive amounts of lives were changed forever when an atomic bomb fell from the sky and created an explosion as bright as the sun. These two bombs were the first and only accounts of nuclear warfare. (“Atomic Bomb is…”) The impact that the two bombs left on the cities of Japan was tremendous. The bombing of Nagasaki and Hiroshima devastated the country through structural damage, long term medical effects, expenses, and the massive loss of life.
The attacks on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were the beginning of the nuclear age . Since these terrible events at the end of the Second World War no more nuclear weapons against humans were used.
Japan will never forgotten the day of August 6 and 9 in 1945; we became the only victim by the atomic bombs in the world. When the atomic was dropped at Hiroshima and Nagasaki, there was World War II. The decision of dropping the atomic bombs was affected by different backgrounds such as the Manhattan Project, and the Pacific War. At Hiroshima City, the population of Hiroshima was 350,000 when the atomic bomb dropped. Also, the population of Nagasaki was around 250,000 ("Overview."). However, there was no accurate number of death because all of documents were burned by the atomic bombs. In August 1945, a uranium-type atomic bomb was dropped by the United States on Hiroshima, Japan, during the final stages of World War II. The following months after the bomb was dropped, many people were killed by burns, radiation sickness, and other injuries. These effects lasted about 4-6 months. Around 90,000 to 166,000 people died either instantaneous or the lasting effects. On August 15th, just days after the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki, Japan announced their surrender to the Allies. However, a military change in strategy has come to promote nuclear disarmament and prevent the usage of nuclear weapons. The technology of building the atomic bomb has spurred some useful innovations that can be applied through the use of nuclear power.
Nuclear Weapons date back to World War II when the world was on the verge of one of the greatest wars in history. In 1942 German physicists learned how to split an atom which caused fear throughout the world. With Germany attempting to create an atomic bomb Einstein and Fermi developed a plan to defeat Axis forces. Fermi informed American Government officials of the situation but very few people saw it as an issue. Einstein then made an attempt of bringing awareness by sending a letter to President Roosevelt asking him to start an atomic research program. Roosevelt found it unnecessary but slowly over time he agreed towards Einsteins request. Thus the Manhattan Project began with a slow start but assured start.
Throughout half the century of the 19’s hundreds a period of new advancements in the creations of a bomb had arisen. On August 8th, 1939 President Roosevelt received a letter from Albert Einstein which ended up being the fundamental support in the creation of the Atomic Bomb. There are two types of atomic bombs fusion and fission, the first atomic bomb was created in 1939 by the Manhattan Project, three weeks later after its first test, it was used in an actual war. It’s capable of wiping out a whole entire city and killing instantly anyone in its way. Now we have better more precise bomb know as hydrogen bombs, these bomb use the energy released when the nuclei of a hydrogen come together or fuse, unlike a fission bomb which gets its energy from when the nuclei of a heavy element such as plutonium or uranium splitting apart creating a chain reaction leading to a large explosion.

Three bombs were created, “Trinity”, “Little Boy”, and “Fat Man”. “Trinity” was dropped on a test site in New Mexico on July 16, 1945, proving the theories, engineering and mathematics of the bomb to be correct. Shortly after that, not more than 2 months, the U.S. performed the first actual nuclear attack in the history of war. The bomb “Little Boy” was dropped on the town of Hiroshima, instantly killing thousands. “Fat Man” was dropped shortly after on the town of Nagasaki. After the bombing almost all scientist involved with the creation of the bomb regretted its construction and spoke out against the abolishment of nuclear weapons.
Chernobyl was the greatest nuclear disaster of the 20th century. On April 26th, 1986, one of four nuclear reactors located in the Soviet Union melted down and contaminated a vast area of Eastern Europe. The meltdown, a result of human error, lapsed safety precautions, and lack of a containment vessel, was barely contained by dropping sand and releasing huge amounts of deadly radioactive isotopes into the atmosphere. The resulting contamination killed or injured hundreds of thousands of people and devastated the environment. The affects of this accident are still being felt today and will be felt for generations to come.
