No to Legalization of Marijuana

Marijuana should not be legalized because it will increase health issues, its use will rise rather than decline, and taxation will result in economic failure. In recent years, however, society has become very moderate, and this is why society’s views can be swayed by the benefits of legalization. Nowadays, legalizing marijuana is not that big of a deal as it was in the 60’s and 70’s when hippies and peace organizations were advocating for marijuana use. However, if marijuana is legalized it has been said that it might be the gateway drug to legalizing all illegal drugs. According to Dr. Robert DuPont, marijuana is the most commonly abused illegal drug is the U.S. and around the world. Marijuana legalization is a liberal position which will give many benefits to those who are already consume it, and if marijuana is ever legalized, then “individuals rights will outnumber the needs of society” (Feder). Individual rights are important to the country too, but legalization should benefit the whole country, not only the individuals who liberally already use marijuana as an escape to their everyday life problems. Many marijuana advocates will say that it is not harmful because it is organic therefore marijuana is believed to be less harmful than the other chemically substance drugs like cocaine and heroin. Nevertheless, “marijuana has been shown to impair perception, speed of motion and accuracy in tasks” (Giannasio). In addition, “marijuana is listed in Schedule 1 which is reserved for drugs that have no recognized medical use and are considered highly dangerous and addictive, and as a Schedule drug, marijuana cannot not be legally possessed, prescribed or distributed” (Marshall).
