Server Technology is all over the world and used to help families, companies as well as ourselves in this everyday life. One of the server technologies I will be pointing out is Ning; Ning is a server where people can create their own personal site. Ning is also the social platform for the world’s interests and passions online. Ning was created because it was offered as an easy to use service that has allowed many people to join and create their Ning Network. Many people use this site to promote their church or companies or anything in the sort. Ning has also been created for many people to come together all across town its similar to Face book, people can do so many things that can give to a job or even a big company. You can even explore and express what interest you while discovering a new passion for things, while doing all this you meet new people all around or even in your area and sharing activities. Ning is told to offer more than 50 different themes to make your site fit the way you see fit, some of the things Ning provides for its creators are, "videos that can be upload at anytime, photos, chat with others while online, downloading favorite music of yours, create groups, events, and blogs ; in addition to latest activity feature, member profile pages, friends, messaging, email notifications, RSS support, and third-party applications a member or Network Creator can add to their Ning Network. As a result of this broad set of choices, each Ning Network is unique and special in its purpose, design, branding and features." Ning allows people , as well as artists, brands and organizations to simplify and control their own Ning Network uniquely that will beautifully combine with other social media services while providing the ... ... middle of paper ... ...isfied with what they chosen. I have chosen to use these sites/servers before and I became happy with most, however some of the sites that I listed and did not list have a verity of things to choose form within the site without becoming very bored. However there are some of the sites that have the same features on one as the other just with a different name. From my understanding when people use Ning they will find a lot of similarities within the site as well as a lot of unique differences. I would not think though that any server/site is higher than the other prior to a lot of the similarities they have in common. Each site/ server had to start from ground on up, so each technologies that been created started off at slow paste. Eventually there will be a time when all site may seem to be similar to other technologies. Works Cited www.microsoft.com; www.ning.com
The history of the internet takes us back to the pioneering of the network and the development of capable technologies. The explosion of the internet’s popularity of the 1990’s was large and dramatic, boosting our economy and then helped to bring it into a major recession. One can only hope that the explosion becomes organized and slightly standardized in the interest of the general public. Despite all of these conjectures and speculations only time can tell the future of the largest network in the world.
These social networking sites, also known as SNSs, have become ingrained in our culture. SNSs
From 1992 to 1995, the concept of the Internet, the technology moved from primarily government and research usage to that of the general public. Terms such as “log on” and surf were born, along with perhaps every conceivable usage of the Internet, from commercial purposes to pornography. With the introduction of Mosaic, the first truly successfully graphic user interface for the Internet, popularity took off, even being proposed as a candidate for Time Magazine’s “Man of the Year”. Starting between 1994 and 1995 though, the perils of internet usage began to emerge, at first in the form of disrupting online business operations. The Internet, quickly dubbed as a new social system in which the newcomers, unaware of the existing rules, redefined what the Internet was all about.
Twitter, LinkedIn, and Myspace all rely on Linux software for their operating system (Vaughan-Nichols, 2010). Each social networking website has their own unique combination of open-source software and web servers. The social networking website Facebook relies on over 30,000 web servers to run the website and its applications efficiently. A typical web server that operates a social network tends to have 256GBs to 512GBs of RAM and are arranged in clusters, usually containing thousands of web servers (Vaughan-Nichols, 2010). Each social networking website has their own unique code, LAMP (Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP/Python/Perl) stacks; which are the different forms of software and server applications the website is built upon (Vaughan-Nichols, 2010). While the exact LAMP of the social networking site is kept a secret, many social networking companies allow other developers to have access to their application programming interfaces so that they can create applications that will run properly on their network. The technologies behind social networking sites are constantly evolving due to the growing amount of online
...ing way to Web 3.0. The effort is in its infancy, and the very idea has given rise to skeptics who have called it an unobtainable vision. But the underlying technologies are rapidly gaining adherents, at big companies like I.B.M. and Google as well as small ones. Their projects often center on simple, practical uses, from producing vacation recommendations to predicting the next hit song.
Before the release of the highly popularized social networking websites, such as, Facebook in 2004, similar forms of social networking tools were used. Brian McConnell, an internet user since 1988, stated that “he used various sites, known as CompuServe, and Prodigy (McConnell, 2008).” I did some research on the sites he listed and found out that CompuServe was the first online service available in the 1980s and played a major role in the foundation of user i.d’s, email services, picture transfers and etc. As time passed by the second online service became available. It was called Prodigy and allowed users to access a number of different networking sites. They ranged from news and weather services to bulletin boards, games, polls, banking and a variety of other features. Since t...

Much of the focus in the Web 2.0 and Social Networking space has been toward customer interaction; that is, how to collaborate better with customers through blogs, forums, or Facebook and MySpace websites, how to increase product awareness or drive sales with marketing campaigns, or how to increase customer satisfaction using Ajax so that pages are updated almost automatically.

With the dawn of the new century and advances in computing, companies and organisations realised the importance of getting a target market of potential customers and employee's which is based online and thus providing a faster and easier way for mass communication and discussions. Then came a revolution of many other online communities I quote a famous FOX News presenter "Some of the better known social computing initiatives include blogging; Wikipedia; flickr; social networks like Orkut, MySpace, Bebo, FaceBook, and LinkedIn, social book marking services like del.icio.us; and multiple initiatives from Google. Recently, the Hollywood film Snakes on a Plane took social computing to a new level by enlisting online fans to contribute to the making of the movie, as well as to its publicity campaign" (Biggs, 2006). This movie was the first of its kind, it had created a amazing fan following online even before it had started production since they asked people for advice n the movies storyline, and the online communities were buzzing with creative ideas they could include in the movie and the story included many user contributed ideas. It was a instant success both online and offline.
The Internet has become a major tool for communication and access to information for over two and half billion people (Wright 121). Although Internet has become an unavoidable reality that is consuming our planet in a web of information. This process is being shaped by our actions and choices which ultimately drives us together (Deibert 11). Nowadays China has over 538 million netizens, the world’s largest online community (Feng & Guo 335).
Just as anything else, social networks were not born in a day, it slowly developed into what is known in today’s society. In the 70’s, Bulletin Board Systems (BBSs) and Usernets were prime communication. BBS is considered the first site that allowed internet users to interact with each other. However, users would have to use a dial-up connection and only one at a time could access the BBS. While Usernets were slightly different. This was a system that allowed users to post articles to newsgroups. Into the 80’s Online Services were created, such as CompuServe, Prodigy and the well-known AOL. These sites simply made the internet “universally accessible in the United States.” Following online services in the late 80’s came Instant Messaging and Chat systems such as Internet Relay Chat, which allowed for sharing links and files. ICQ was also booming around this time, its use was for instant messaging and was “partly” responsible for avatars, emoticons and abbreviations such as LOL and BRB. In 1997 the “first modern social network” Six Degrees was created. This site allowed users to build profiles, and become “friends” with other users. Following Six Degrees were sites such as; BlackPlanet, LiveJournal. World of Warcraft, Friendster, Hi5, LinkedIn, Myspace, YouTube, Facebook, Twitter and Ins...
Already in 1980 the project Bulletin-Board-Systems (BBS) was invented which was the foundation of social networks. This system was the first which allowed the users the exchange of data and messages between multiple users on a single platform. In 1990 the applications CompuServe, Prodigy and AOL appeared which the basic functions were and which also now represent a social network set. As time went on the sites have transformed rapidly, adding new features each year to attract more people. There was a constant change in regards of the popularity for each one. Many websites have since been closed down for many reasons mostly because of competition from the more successful sites.
Social Network websites give choice to user to publish contents or make his profile visible to network that creates possibilities to interact with other users .These purposes can be easily implemented by the advancement in the knowledge of Informatics. The number of Social networking service providers has been rising for the last decade, focusing on services for regional user groups or on services for users with particular interests. These interests may be based on relationships or motivations e.g. religious, political, commotions, protests, focused discussions and seminars, etc Tools like MySpace, Facebook, LinkedIn, YouTube, BlogSpot, etc got an increasing popularity with internet users where they can create profile/web-links, publish their own contents and share information like contacts, multimedia, blogs, etc. with other users on networks.
“The Internet is becoming the town square for the global village of tomorrow.” Bill Gates. The Internet is vast and is just getting bigger. It has its own community that is open to the public. The Internet is becoming a platform all on its own. It is a stepping-stone in a direction that is unknown. The Internet has become so vast that there are now different versions of it. The different versions of the web are Web 1.0, Web 2.0, the main focus of this paper, and Web 3.0. Web 1.0 is all about sharing information. It is very bland and just gets the point across of what was needed. This how the Internet had started. Web 2.0 is sharing information with interaction. To me this means social media in some fashion. The website that was accessed has a way of interacting with the users whether it be through comments or giveaways on the web. Web 3.0 is the server interacting with the individual on a particular website. Amazon is the best example of Web 3.0 because it gives recommendations based on items that have been searched. “Among American adults 87% use the web, 68% connect...
