Using fire was almost like walking on a high wire. Fire was once a mystery to me. As a child, I saw people used fire once, so I thought I knew enough to use it safely; but eventually everything was going wrong; as Alexander Pope once said, “A little learning is a dangerous thing”.
The first time I used a lighter as a child, it went badly. I was about five years old when my parents and I were planning to go for a wonderful two days vacation in China. The night before our vacation, my father was showing me how to turn on a lighter and put his hand under and below, which the fire didn’t burn at all. Suddenly, my mother called my father to have a talk; but he forgot to put the lighter on the high shelf as he went away. I don’t want to get into trouble,” I, being ever cautious, was always reluctant to participate in Ben’s adventures. “No one is going to find out. Stop being such a baby, and go get

Coal Fires I’ve long been familiar with the concept of coal mines, but a common occurrence I was unfamiliar with previous to this class was the concept of coal mine fires, but it is a huge problem, both economically and environmentally. Perhaps the most infamous American example of a coal mine fire is Centralia, a town in the anthracite region of eastern Pennsylvania. Centralia was like any other coal town until one fateful day in 1962, when a heap of burning trash in a dump that doubled
dinner table and suddenly the TV program was erupted in with an irritating noise. An announcment ran across the bottom of the TV screen, "There will be a fire meeting tonight, 7:30." The steel door is cold and I carefully enter the door lock's code and turn the reluctant knob. The room is dark and I blindly reach around the corner

The Fire That Burns Within "...we but level that lift to pass and continue beyond." Walt Whitman, "Now I Will You to Be a Bold Swimmer," Song of Myself. I never really thought about how one's childhood continues to shape one's future. When I was young it never crossed my mind to say, "I wanna be a medical doctor of endocrinology when I grow up" or "I wanna be a biomedical researcher at A&M University." It was, of course, always "I wanna be a fireman" or "I'm gonna be an astronaut." Somewhere
