Over the past few years a debate between Flash and HTML5 has been gaining more attention as HTML5 becomes more developed and polished. Flash has been the web standard for websites since the late 1990’s but HTML5 is quickly gaining ground and is considered by some as the standard of the “future”. Another aspect of the debate is whether or not we should go with open web standards or closed, Flash being the latter. Even though 85% of the most-visited websites run on flash, HTML5 is the future because HTML5 combined with javascript and CSS3 offers the same capabilities as flash and HTML5 can avoid many issues that Flash faces by being open source.

Flash first appeared in 1998 and was created by Adobe Systems. Flash quickly gained popularity and became the standard for web development shortly after. Flash uses the ActionScript programming language, which allows developers to create web animations and websites that were far superior to anything that was developed using HTML at the time. With the new development of HTML5, developers can now create the same level of animations and websites that were previously only able to be achieved using Flash. HTML5 is a synthesis of several technologies and has a broad potential developer base, which is part of the reason that it is gaining in popularity. 99% of PC browsers support Flash, but most new mobile phones and tablets that are being released do not support Flash, which is one of its biggest drawbacks. Browser support of HTML5 has been steadily growing as we switch to the future of the internet/mobile devices and is currently at 40% of all browsers.
