Money. Our economy, our nation, our life thrives on this lifeless, tangible, paper. It’s clear that in an advertiser’s eyes money is crucial. After all, the purpose of advertising a product is to sell it, ultimately bringing in the big bucks for companies and their advertisers. Superficially, this may seem reasonable, but advertisements are actually detrimental to society, its health, and its well-being.
Because it’s their job, advertisers do a flawless job at targeting and convincing society to buy products. Even though the silly ads shown on TV may seem ineffective, it’s proven that “a person unaware of advertising’s claim on him is precisely the one most vulnerable to the ad’s attack” (Schrank). Through, what may seem like useless advertisements, companies successfully dictate society and control them to buy their product without the consumer even realizing it! This is harmful to an individual exposed to the advertisements, as they lose control of their life in the economic and consumer world. It’s almost as though advertisements hypnotize society. Described in Source D, once a company has hooked consumers (teenage consumers specifically), they or “she may be yours for life.” (Day). This presents the issue of advertisements imposing damaging effects to one’s well being. Control of one’s life is now in the hands of an advertiser and societal perceptions, so the helpless teen can only just follow and slowly degrade one’s sense of self without even noticing its effect.
A portion of the population may argue, probably advertisers greedy for money in specific, that advertisements are helpful tools in educating the public on the important products needed in everyday life. However, Sesana uses a humorous approach to identify advertising as unnecessary when stating that vital products aren’t even advertised! “Nobody spends huge sums advertising flour. People will buy it even without it being advertised.” (Source F). Not only are advertisements harmful, they aren’t even needed! Society can live without flashy cars and cigarettes, so why target the population so diligently if those products aren’t even necessary in living a prosperous life? Since advertisements render useless, they waste society’s time and energy that could be better spent improving the world opposed to benefiting a ravenous company.
An eminent issue the act of advertising instigates is the possible vulnerability of one’s health. Companies choose to advertise products that are dangerous to one’s health, blinded by the income they desire to obtain. Based on Source B, cigarettes, even though dangerous to one’s health, still prosper in the market.
Advertising is designed to foster a desire to purchase goods and services, yet it is much deeper than that—advertising is a system of effective manipulation that twists the mentalities of those subjected to it. It shapes people’s views of the world and warps their connections to each other. Therefore, advertising not only shapes their personal values but also distorts them until their principles no longer come from within them. Thus, in my opinion, advertising, unless deeply rooted in high ethical standards, destroys any concept of community, common morality or deep bonding.
In the article, Every Nook and Cranny: The Dangerous Spread of Commercialized Culture by Gary Ruskin and Juliet Schor (Ackley 361). Since the early 90s is when Commercialism has bombarded the society. Ruskin and Schor provide examples why advertising has an effect on people’s health. Marketing related diseases afflicting people in the United States, and especially children, such as obesity, type 2 diabetes and smoking-related illnesses. “Each day, about 2,000 U.S. children begin to smoke, and about one-third of them will die from tobacco-related illnesses” (Ackley 366). Children are inundated with advertising for high calorie junk food and fast food, and, predictably, 15 percent of U.S. children aged 6 to 19 are now overweight (Ackley 366). Commercialism promotes future negative effects and consumers don’t realize it.
Many companies spend over millions of dollars advertising every year, and these advertisements influence how an individual thinks and acts in a society. It becomes a significant aspect of our lives whether it has come to our acknowledgment or not. It influences us to the extent we believe the information presented in the media are “normal”. To be precise, advertisements create and define the social norms. These concepts are strongly built into my mind since a young age, especially the gender roles between men and women.
Advertisements are one of many things that Americans cannot get away from. Every American sees an average of 3,000 advertisements a day; whether it’s on the television, radio, while surfing the internet, or while driving around town. Advertisements try to get consumers to buy their products by getting their attention. Most advertisements don’t have anything to do with the product itself. Every company has a different way of getting the public’s attention, but every advertisement has the same goal - to sell the product. Every advertisement tries to appeal to the audience by using ethos, pathos, and logos, while also focusing on who their audience is and the purpose of the ad. An example of this is a Charmin commercial where there is a bear who gets excited when he gets to use the toilet paper because it is so soft.
Advertising is a downfall to society by promoting unhealthy products. By selling cigarettes and other tobacco products, the advertising world leaves out shortened lifespan due to the products. Instead of advertising to our advantage, they advertise to theirs. For example, Shaw and Alan stated that “advertising continued to increase the size of market, despite an expanding awareness of health risks.”(Source B) Tobacco products aren't the only unhealthy products though.The fast food industry plays a big role in societies obesity, which could lead to an unhealthy lifestyle. Commercials try their best to persuade by making the food look desirably delicious and tempting to eat while leaving out what is and what is not contained in the food. This is the disadvantage to society because they persuade us while knowing the cons and how we fall short due to temptation.
For decades, targeted advertisement directed to children and teenagers was a somewhat controversial issue. Every year young people are exposed to 40,000 advertisements on television only, not counting number of advertisements on the Internet or on billboards. This exposure could be responsible for excess weight in children and consumption of alcohol and tobacco by teenagers (Strasburger 2001). Excessive advertising to children is harmful, unhealthy, and must be regulated.
Today we live in a society that is being dominated and confounded by commercials and ads. A new age, which could be referred to as the advertising age where commercials and ads tell us what is a necessity and what isn't. Howard Luck Gossage in his book Is There Any Hope for Advertising? Stated that there are ads and commercials everywhere around us in which there is no escape. "I like to imagine a better world where there will be less, and more stimulating advertising. I suppose all of us would like to see this come to pass, it would certainly clear away some of the confusion from advertising's murky picture and make it easier to comprehend" (7). Ads and commercials have flourished everywhere like a virus, once it strikes there is no way we can remove the marks it left behind. It creates this blurry, confusing picture, a "murky picture" as Gossage stated, which most people won't find the genuine truth behind what the product really mean and if its really useful or not. Advertising forces consumers into buying products by manipulation which make the customers buy products they think are good for them when in fact it isn't and they do this by appealing in their innermost desires. Advertisers are aware of the cultural need of acceptance and people's insecurities and takes advantage of these desires to persuade people into buying their products.
Advertising in its purest form has been an essential part of the business world for centuries. The purpose of advertising is to inform society of a certain product and/or service that has become available. Advertising is used as a method of communication between a consumer and the company in which the product is from, because it persuades the consumers to take action. According to Lindsay in “The Case of Print Media Advertising in the Internet Age” the individuals who are above the age of 18 and reside in America, spend a total of 9 hours, and 35 minutes using media per day (2007). In figure 1 it shows that non-print advertisements represent the majority of the time spent utilizing this media. The pie-chart showed that certain individuals spent 44.5% of their time watching television, 27.8% listening to the radio, and 5.3% on the internet meanwhile newspapers, music, magazines and books resulted in a total of 16.5% combined (The Case of Print, 2007, pg. 7). We are exposed to several hundreds of advertisements every day; some of these advertisements include direct phone calls from telemarketers, billboards, and commercials. While print advertisements aren’t at the high end of the typical consumers view scale, they are the most effective due to the consistency in which they appear. The use of print advertisements in marketing is posing a great danger to all members of society, because they put a damper on both men and women’s self-worth, encourage the use alcohol in minors, and is causing obesity rates to increase. In today’s society, we live in a place where advertising surrounds us physically and digitally.
