Some people picture genetically modified food as being unhealthy and unnatural. Our grocery stores are full of genetically modified food but we are unaware because the food is not labeled. If some people saw a label in the grocery store stating that the product is genetically modified they may walk the other way. The individuals may think that the genetically modified products will cause some type of harm to their bodies over time. Some people are extremely pessimistic about changes that have to do with what they consume. I am neither for nor against genetically modified food. Modifying food in my eyes could be a good thing because the food could help aid world hunger, and help evolve plants and animals to the point they do not get diseases. On the other hand genetically modified food could also be bad because the genetically modified organisms could get out of captivity and cause the natural organisms to become extinct, and the genetically modified food could cause allergic reactions based on what genes they are given.
Genetically modified food can be grown in seasons that the food normally does not grow in because of the new genes they are given. In the article written by Emily Anthes, she talks about how a company called AquaBounty wants to create a genetically modified Atlantic salmon that can produce growth hormones during the cold months. Anthes states, “Normally, Atlantic salmon produce growth hormone only in the warm summer months, but these genetic adjustments let the fish churn it out year round.” Allowing the Atlantic salmon to produce the growth hormone all year round means there will be more fish. To be honest I have never heard of genetically modified food causing any type of health issue in people who do consume genetically modified food. What do you think? Do you consider genetically modified food as “franken food” that should not be created? Or do you think that we as a people should give genetically modified food a try before we judge the food?

Well, if you find yourself stuck in one of those situations where you can’t decide whether GM foods are good for you or bad, you’ve come to the right place. Genetically modified? That alone should be a cause for alarm, and have you wondering, what exactly is in this that I am eating? Yet every day millions of American’s choose to load up on food filled with GMO’s, and not even know it. First we must understand what GMO’s are. GMO’s are any organism whose genetics has been altered using genetic engineering. We should not be tampering with nature, and should try to grow organically as much as possible. There has not been enough research on GMO’s to know the potential long term effects it can have on us, so this is why GMO’s should be banned.
Gaucher disease is an inherited, chronic, progressive genetic disorder. People diagnosed with Gaucher disease lack an enzyme known as glucocerebrosidase (Bennett, 2013). It is the most common condition within the lysosomal storage order diseases (Chen, 2008). Glucocerebrosidase helps break down glucocerebreside, a fatty substance stored or accumulated inside the lysosome (Enderlin, 2003). This causes the cells to become bloated and is visible under a microscope. It is estimated that about 1 in 40,000 to 60,000 have Gaucher disease or about 10,000 people worldwide (Hughes, 2013). In addition, Gaucher disease has a higher frequency among Jews of Ashkenazi (Eastern European) decent: up to 1 in 450 people.

Estimates show that twelve million Americans have serious food allergies as evidenced by abnormal blood immunoglobulin levels. In 1996, Brazilian nut genes were placed into soybeans in order to provide additional protein called methionine. However, some individuals are so allergic to the nut, they can actually go into anaphylactic shock. Following several incidences the product was removed from the market before any actual fatalities occurred(Lacey). Many research studies have positively confirmed this kind of overall risk for genetically modified foods. When we genetically modify an organism, we are creating an entirely new species. This can mean disaster for the surrounding natural organisms. These GM crops, which have been created to fight pests and weeds, can easily win in a competition for survival. Long-term effects include endangering these unmodified species, or even driving them to extinction. Another problem is that consumers don’t know when they’re eating GM foods. You might be allergic to fish, and then you go grocery shopping. You buy tomatoes to use in your dinner that night, with no knowledge that they have fish genes that can trigger your allergies. Allergic reactions to these modified foods are just another issue that comes up when GMOS come into play. Also, when we buy these foods, we’re supporting big industries that have patents on all these crops. The fact that people can patent crops just because they stuck some new DNA in them doesn’t make sense to begin with, but furthermore, the local, organic farmers who don’t want to, or can’t afford to pay these industries to use their patented crops are losing business.
Genetically modified foods are developed by combining genes from two different organisms which alters it's DNA and do not occur naturally. Biotechnology is relatively new so like most people, I turned to research to argue this issue with facts. In my opinion, genetically modifying foods have more harmful effects than they do beneficial. I am against their use because it creates safety risks for our health and animals, it can damage the environment and we have to deal with the total costs.

Most of the foods that we consume from grocery stores are products of artificial selection in which humans breed select animals or plants together because of their desirable traits that we see as useful and beneficial. However, genetically modifying a food is a process that is completely different. For GM salmon, scientists are inserting the growth gene from the Pacific Chinook salmon and a switch-on gene from the Ocean Pout into the fertilized eggs of Atlantic salmon ("Clarified: What does," 2010). The Pacific Chinooks growth genes will allow the genetically altered salmon to grow to its full adult size in half the time, while the Ocean Pout switch-on gene will allow it to grow during the winter and summer months ("Clarified: What does," 2010). GMO products are products that have undergone modifications that cannot happen in nature. GMOs are advertised as a better, more enhanced version. Scientists have altered the genes of GMO products so that it can grow in different environments, in severe weather conditions, and to generate more food. The truth of the matter is that because of these modifications, GMO foods propose major problems for our health, our environment, and our well-being. The manufactures of these foods will tell you that they are no different then food that has not been genetically modified, but if that is the case why modify foods at all? These manufactures will try to tell you that the food is safe, even better for you. I am going to tell you the truth. I am going to tell you the real reasons why genetically modified organisms are bad for our country.
How many of you hear the words “genetically modified food” and immediately think “BAD”? How many of you scorn the idea that genetically modified foods are useful? How many of you have been manipulated by the media to think that all biotechnology is evil? Genetically modified organisms (GMOs) are organisms that have been genetically spliced to achieve a certain trait. As the demand for a larger food supply is increasing due to population growth, the benefits that GMO foods provide are being hailed as the only solution to the food crisis. However, many people are making inadequately informed decisions, and are pushing them to the back shelf. I will inform you on why genetically modified organisms may be the only way to a stable, safe future for the less fortunate.

The importance of this issue is that these GMO’s can actually have a negative effect in our society in general. It could mutate in a negative way and cause cancer or other diseases. Genetically modified food’s, or GMOs, goal is to feed the world's malnourished and undernourished population. Exploring the positive side to GMOs paints a wondrous picture for our planet’s future, although careful steps must be taken to ensure that destruction of our ecosystems do not occur. When GMOs were first introduced into the consumer market they claimed that they would help eliminate the world’s food crisis by providing plants that produced more and were resistant to elemental impacts like droughts and bacterial contaminants, however, production isn’t the only cause for the world’s food crisis. Which is a cause for concern because the population on the earth is growing and our land and ways of agriculture will not be enough to feed everyone sufficiently. No simple solutions can be found or applied when there are so many lives involved. Those who are hungry and those who are over fed, alike, have to consider the consequences of Genetically Modified Organisms. Food should not be treated like a commodity it is a human necessity on the most basic of levels. When egos, hidden agendas, and personal gains are folded into people's food sources no one wins. As in many things of life, there is no true right way or wrong way to handle either of the arguments and so many factors are involved that a ‘simple’ solution is simply not an option.
