Nation Brand of Kazakhstan

As “a bird may be known by its song”, so each country may be known by its Nation Brand. It means that each country has something very particular and special that characterizes only this country. I see Kazakhstan Nation Brand in the eyes of the citizen of the Republic, however, the foreigners’ perception of Kazakhstan Nation Brand should be also taken in account in order to understand what reputation Kazakhstan has in the world community. Many people abroad come to Kazakhstan for different purposes, so how do they see Kazakhstan and what influenced their perception of the country?

I had an opportunity to learn more about American perception of Kazakhstan from my cousin, who became a winner of the Future Leader Exchange Program, which gave her a chance to study in the high school in the USA for one year. She was very surprised when she knew that few Americans knew about Kazakhstan. The common question which she was always used to be asked was “Are you from the country of Borat?” and she was tired of persuading people that the film, which was shot in 2006 in Romania by the person who had never been to Kazakhstan, British comedian Sacha Baron Cohen, was not authentic about Kazakhstan. It was just a fiction which created a negative image of Kazakhstan abroad. Fortunately, her peers and familiars, looking at her behavior and respected attitude to the USA started to realize that Kazakh people were very civilized and educated. Finally, many Americans understood that the movie was just a comedy to amuse people, but sometimes this amusement could bring negative consequences to the reputation of the country as a whole.
